Root [GUIDE] Brick Recovery

They take up 1.5 MB, at most, but your call, I suppose. :)
When I removed towelroot and super SU, it freed up about 500 mb of internal memory. Right now I have the following installed:

Skype
Bnet app
Home Depot app
ES file explorer
Wells Fargo app
Double Twist (can't wait for Foobar2000)
Drastic
GTA: Chinatown Wars
Hearthstone
Imgur
Konundrum
My Boy
Osmosis HD
Plex
Smash Hit
SNES9x
UB reader

Plus the apps that come with Android, and I have 545mb free internally. I wanted to setup my external card to house some of the bigger stuff, but it seemed like too much work to get programs to install to the SD.

I'm basically a light gamer and don't really care about root (except to get rid of the crap that kept popping up like the Weather and Connections Optimizer).

I also sent back the replacement phone they sent me because it got stuck in a boot loop after trying to root it. Reflashing the rom would get it back to zv3, but it wouldn't take root, so I am still stuck with the phone that has the broken flash LED.

That's simply not right. I don't know what you removed to free up that space, but it wasn't SuperSU and towelroot. Also, towelroot isn't 'root'. It just installed the su binary, which it sounds like you probably still have installed, but now you have nothing controlling it.

I'm not familiar with all those apps, but I'm a bit surprised that 16 apps are eating up 3.5GB, unless you are on ART runtime. Although I can see Hearthstone sucking up a good chunk of space. I have 82 user apps installed, 1.3GB free, 500MB worth of app data moved to the SD card with OBB2SD.
You have a couple options for moving stuff to the SD card. Link2SD, which requires making a 2nd partition on your SD card (not really that difficult); and OBB2SD which is an Xposed framework module that lets you put apps obb and data on your SD card, which is really the bulk of the space consumption, especially with games. Of course, these both require root. Neither are hard to set up, OBB2SD only requiring you to install it and move the contents of the Android folder to the Android folder on your SD card and reboot. You need to have installed the SDfix patch too, of course.

I also sent back the replacement phone they sent me because it got stuck in a boot loop after trying to root it. Reflashing the rom would get it back to zv3, but it wouldn't take root, so I am still stuck with the phone that has the broken flash LED.
Why wouldn't you have fixed the good one and sent the broken one back?

I was going to send the broken one back but I couldn't get the replacement to take root. I tried several times, following the same guide I used to root my phone, and every single time it would reboot and get stuck in a boot loop. The phone itself was zv3 when I got it, so I tried just rooting it from there, and ran into a boot loop issue. Then I tried the downgrade process to get it back to a version of zv3 that I know will take root, and then it got stuck in a boot loop again. I tried one more time from factory reset to downgrade it and root it, but it just wouldn't work.

I'm not sure what I did wrong but with Virgin Mobile you only have so much time to send back a phone before they shut off your service. I so just opted to stick with the volt I have. I can always just buy a new one at some point down the road (they are $80 through Sprint right now) if not having a flash becomes a real problem (right now it's fine, I don't really use it anyway, and everything else on the phone works 100%). I think I just got a bad LED module, which happens.

The two biggest space hogs are Hearthstone and GTA: chinatown wars. Both are using over 2 GB of space on their own. When the HS app comes out for Phones, hopefully the client will be smaller. I would try to move files to the SD card but I don't think there's a way to install 100% of an app to SD card. That's the ideal solution, since I have something like 20GB of space on my SD card.

Also, is this guide a good one for me to follow to update my rom to zv4? I didn't happen to see the zv4 rom listed on this guide.

http://androidforums.com/threads/rom-zv4-updated-stock-rom.872005/

You can use that ROM, but follow this guide, using CWM instead of TWRP. That ROM won't flash with TWRP for some reason. Which is why it is skipped in the guide. Although I wonder if skipping it is what is causing the glitches...I didn't have any issues...it seems like it's just people that are going from zv3 to zv5. I also used the old version of the zv5 ROM, not the one that is posted now. Would you be willing to do an experiment? Once you get on zv4, install TWRP, make a backup, and update to zv5 and see if you have any problems? If you do, you can roll back to zv4 with your backup.

If you download link2sd, it will show you how the total size of a given app breaks down. Obb and data account for 90% of an apps size. I would suggest using OBB2SD to move those to your SD card. No special formatting or anything, other than applying the SDfix patch. Once you install it in Xposed framework, just move the data and obb folders from the Android folder on your internal storage to the Android folder on your SD card (say yes to any overwrite prompts) and reboot.

Weird about that phone. I wonder what was going wrong. are you sure it was on zv3?

I can't verify it now, but it was a refurbished phone sent from Virgin. It literally only came in a white box with the phone, sim card, and the back cover. I would have had to reuse my battery, charging cable, and whatnot to use the phone. When I booted it up, I did not activate it, I wanted it to root before I committed to using it, and I didn't want to cause any issues if it didn't successfully take root.

Even if it wasn't zv3, I flashed the rom back to zv3, so I don't know why it was having issues. Normal flashing back to zv3 the phone will sit on the LG screen for some time before booting into the home screen. This phone would literally sit on the LG screen for 10-15 seconds, restart, sit on the LG screen for 10-15 seconds, restart, ect. The only way to stop it was to remove the battery and then start over by flashing the rom.

It would get stuck in a boot loop after installing SU and rebooting (cuz it asks for a reboot when you update the binaries). Towelroot would install just fine, so would super user. I'm just not that experienced at doing this kind of stuff with phones (I'm more of a computer guy), so I don't really know how to go about doing this stuff without a guide. I was facing a deadline to send the phone back, otherwise I would have stuck with it and figured it out. Did u know that Virgin charges $25 for a replacement that ends up being a refurbished phone?

Yeah I think I will just shell out another $80 for a new Volt, rather than $25 for a refurbished one. Also, do you think there would be compatibility issues with a sprint volt trying to get activated on the Virgin service? I know Virgin uses the sprint network, so wouldn't it just be a matter of putting my current sim into the Sprint volt and activating it with the new MEID on the sprint phone?

As far as trying to update to zv4, I was only interested because of the better performance, less ram usage, and whatnot. My phone seems to do alright with roughly 350mb free ram and the battery life lasts for 2 days of light use. Not really sure it's worth the risk to flash a custom rom over this one, especially if I have to reinstall everything, reroot, ect.

I haven't really spent much time learning about android, so a lot of the stuff in the guide is unknown to me (delvik cache, deodexed, zipaligned, init.d enabled), I feel like a noob when it comes to jumping into this on a phone.

So I tried the Link2SD thing and installed Xposed with Obb to SD module, and it didn't work. After I moved the OBB files for those two games to the SD card, the games wanted to download the content again. I still have root access and everything, I reinstalled towelroot, Super SU, and whatnot. I did not install TWRP again yet, is that needed? I thought it was just for backing up and recovering your roms.

Also, could you post a link to a zv4 rom/radio that isn't pre rooted? I'm assuming that's what I need in order to update?

You have to move the obb AND data folders, as I mentioned... Did you install Xposed framework?
There is no non rooted ROM, no reason for there to be.
You don't need to have towelroot on your phone.
You need TWRP if you are going to update to zv5.

FYI,the author of Link2SD has revealed that the next version will include the ability to link data and obb folders to the external SD card. I currently use it together with FolderMount to move data and obb folders, but once that capability is built in to Link2SD, I'll say bye bye to FolderMount.

Check out these screenshots from my son's Volt. The storage screen says 5.43GB of apps are installed, yet magically 3.19 GB is still available. :) We were able to install some rather bloated games that would not have been possible using only the internal storage. Over 3GB of obb files were moved to the external SD card. In my experience, games are the main culprits for having huge data or obb folders.

Nice, thanks for the info. I downloaded FolderMount but hadn't installed it. I think I"ll just wait for the update to Link2SK.

Linking of data/obb will only be available in the paid version of Link2SD. The free version of FolderMount will allow you to move up to 3 data/obb folders. If you are pinching pennies, you can use the free versions of both programs together.

Personally I think Link2SD is an essential tool for phones with limited internal memory. It adds so much value to the phone, that I don't mind paying for it and supporting the developer.

Hi-just got my phone yesterday and followed the steps in the guide. Downgraded from V4 to V3 and everything went well up until the last step of upgrading to z5. After upgrading to z5 through TWRP I rebooted and kept getting all sorts of popups saying various services have stopped working. Any ideas what went wrong? Fortunately I had made an earlier backup with v3 so I restored to that for now.

Do a factory reset.

I think the problem was that I had 2 backups in the TWRP folder and it was using up too much space because I was getting storage errors also. I deleted one of them and upgraded to z5 and it seems to be working. Does TWRP and the backups have to be stored on the internal storage? If not, how do I get it on the external card?

Right now, it says I have 1.39 gb free out of 3.93 gb on the internal storage. Does that seem right..this is a brand new phone that I just got yesterday so nothing on it yet? Seems like I ought to be able to have more than one backup stored without it having storage issues.

No, they don't. In fact, they shouldn't, unless you are going to copy it off and store it on your computer. You can change the storage location in the backup screen. Tap the available storage to change. You can enable compression for the backup too.

It does if you have a backup in the internal storage. You only have 4GB internal storage, 3.93GB after formatting.

Hello everyone. I have a new LG Volt with ZV3 that I recently activated on Boost Mobile. I rooted it following "Step 4 - Rooting zv3 and installing TWRP" in this guide. I want to make a backup of my ZV3 for safety's sake before I go further, but I was wondering... Would it be possible to install my original stock ZV3 in the future with TWRP if I wanted to after I install the ZV5 Odexed ROM and the ZV5 Radio? Would my ZV3 work with ZV5 Radio?

I agree with you, and I actually have the paid version now of Link2SD , but I'm assuming to get their new version I would need to buy it again, which I wouldn't have a problem with. I think this app is definitely worth supporting the developers.

No, you won't. Why would you have to rebuy an app you've bought just because it updated?

I think i accidentally bricked my phone.
Forgot to check BOARD mode now have factory reset 2 screen as the only thing i can access how do i proceed?
??

Hello, first let me say thank you for everything. Here is my problem, everything runs smoothly until I have to unplug the USB cord from the computer and plug it back in. The LG Flash Tool says "Waiting for Connection, then I get a "Factory Model Check ERROR!!". The device says its a HTCEVOV4G, which is my old phone. I have read all the way to this point trying different suggestions and am completely at wits end. Any idea whats going on? Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Try uninstalling all phone related drivers and software from the computer, including the ones you need for this. Reboot, reinstall the LG drivers, reboot. Try again. There could be a port conflict or something to that effect.
