LG Ally 2.1 Update is being RELEASED today!! - LG Forum

SNIPPET...

Hello everyone,
I have just been notified that the Ally will be getting an upgrade to a new software version ZVB.
Please do not confuse this with FROYO 2.2 Upgrade! This is a software update for features in the device NOT a OS update.
The update will be done via GOTA (Google Over the Air), this means that the update will happen automatically, the same way the V08 update happened in the past.

SW update start date: 9/17
Schedule: Day 1 - 10K, Day 2 - soak, Day 3 - hold due to weekend, Day 4 - 100K, Day 5 - 400-500K (remaining)
So by the schedule above, all Ally

Switch back to stock rom to do the update? Or since velocity has ota should I just wait to see if I'll get it right now?

Note that it says that they fixed root, so I wouldn't rush to update as soon as you get it, sticking to velocity for now.

+1 Unless this update is something drastic (froyo) I can't imagine it's anything more or even is up to snuff with the roms dev's have been making.

It will probably just be a few more useless LG bloatware apps....

I'm a little confused. The OP says that the update will happen automatically, but a lot of you are saying to hold off on applying it. Will we be able to refuse the update if we've rooted but are still running the stock ROM?

Well, crap. According to the instructions on the Verizon site (link), you can say "Update later", but then you'll get a nag screen every 30 minutes. That sucks.

I had just got my phone set up the way I wanted it and didn't really want to flash a custom ROM. I guess I have to either go back to stock now or go custom?

I just got my replacement ally. I can wait (don't want to) but can wait to re-root my phone and add velocity if anyone needs a tester. Let me know so that I can wait to root my phone :-)

I think Drellisdee is looking for a Ginny pig

Update should download to /cache btw. Copy it from there with root explorer before applying it. To apply it you need to be on stock rom and stock recovery.

Oh so IIRC we will RX the update then be asked if we want to apply it? In that case ill get you a copy. I just did a *#*#checkin#*#* and no update available to me yet

Hey all, I have a couple more questions about this. I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I rooted my phone a couple of weeks ago and used Titanium Backup to backup and then uninstall a number of the stock apps. I would like to restore those before this update hits. I figured that would be a straightforward way to get myself back to the stock configuration. However, it doesn't look like TB actually backed up the apks, just the data. Is that true, or has anyone here used TB to uninstall and then reinstall system apps. I can't find an option to reinstall.

So, if I can't reinstall, is the best thing for me to do to just flash the stock ROM? I've never flashed a ROM before, so I'm a little gunshy about that. If I'm going to do that, though, I may just go ahead and give the Velocity ROM a try, if that will let me avoid the update. Is this guide still accurate?

Thanks, and sorry for cluttering the thread. I can move this if I should.

Alright guys when I get the update I will let it do its thing. I have stock everything since mine is a replacement that I just got yesterday. i will go check for the update, no update here as of yet.

Robo...wait on applying it

like Drellisdee said it will be in the /cache folder and it will be as a *.zip file. copy that to your sdcard or something beforehand. otherwise the zip gets deleted after the update is finished.

and the update shouldnt affect the reflash of stock lg rom via my method because it uses LG's official update tool just uses another tool to give LG's tool information on what phone and version of software and where the cab is located. or so i hope not.

I'm more than willing to be a tester. Will restore to my original rom to see if I get the update.

Well so far no update for me. Restored to my original rom. Nothing happened there. Did the checkin procedure. Nothing happened. Just have to wait.

Here's the catch.. the device would need to be rooted so that we can chmod the /cache partition to extract the file.

And you can apply it with a custom recovery. Simply move the update from the /cache partition to the root of your SD card and reboot into recovery. You can then apply from there.

The first night an update rolls out, it usually doesn't start till about 11:59 PM.

My father has the same phone so i told him to let me know when the update gets pushed to his phone. so i can get us a copy that way

I dont believe this update will bring anything special that we dont have, I'm not even going to worry about flashing it unless there's a 50% fix so I can get at least a full day with light use out of this phone.
