<conspiracy theory>
Initially, the rumors had Samsung releasing two phones on the same day - the S5 and the F6. LG had recently released the G2. What should LG do? They usually release models in the fall which means the other flagships impact their sales.
The solution - announce the G2P in the spring calling it the G3. It would not have all the features that the released rumors stated would be on the G3 because some things would not be available yet. This would not be a problem since they would not give an availability date to the carriers. Meanwhile their rumors would force HTC and Samsung to release upgraded versions of their flagships or risk being called behind the times.
In May, LG announces the G3 with some specs missing. Along comes summer and LG now gives carriers an availability date and the missing specifications - SoC 805, new modem and so on.
Was this a dream or a nightmare? It fits the pattern of what is happening though.
