LG G3 Pre-release/Rumor/Speculation Thread

Alrighty then, until we get some official word from the carriers, we are all really pondering Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster..... In a battle royale!

Fight!!!!

I'm not agonizing over wireless charging. I have it on my Verizon G2 and I like it and use it all the time. I plan on putting a TPU case on my G3 so I really don't care what the back looks like. Trust me, wireless charging backs will be available, either standard from the carrier ( like Verizon did with the G2), as an accessory purchase from LG, or from one of the 212 mom and pop shops in China that will be producing wireless charging backplates for under $10. Sleep well.

I love wireless charging. In the past my connector was constantly falling behind my nightstand when I unplugged my phone in the morning, requiring me to go digging for it all the time. Not to mention the few times my glasses snagged in the charging cord and sent the phone tumbling off the stand when I woke up. Now, just plop it on the pad each night, and pick it up in the morning.

I am more concerned that the device has the same battery as the G2, yet LG state same battery life. Considering same 28 micron fab for the chip, higher clock and Qhd display, there is a trade-off somewhere and IMO it is likely throttling (as far as most weight). This is straight from LG:

"adaptive technology minimizes the drain of the Quad HD screen including adaptive frame rate, CPU clocking and timing control".

Testing will tell the tale, but assertions by EM and others that the G3 might not be a good fit for gamers could have merit. BTW, I agree with EM that "adaptive technology" for the display seems more a play on semantics.

Added:

I want a media using, game playing fool like me to test and review this device :) Most reviews are by the numbers and superficial. Anandtech and very few others stand out in a good way.

None test signal reception much. Not even Anandtech.

Testing reception (sensitivity) is really hard to do because of the expense of the RF test equipment involved. And you have to know what you're doing.

S4GRU.com (Sprint only) often gives a good radio follow-up for their version but prior to the release they were uninterested in the G3. I'll post back if I see anything interesting there. And they don't test everything either.

As for the 28 nm manufacturing process, it's not chopped liver lol. It's current, but not the very latest.

Remember, clocks and CPUs are variable and except under worst conditions, the thing ought typically not be running at top speed. And the 801 has a minor power/CPU advantage, so it's going to be a little bit more efficient.

I'll look at the G2 and G3 teardowns and see if there are any other part considerations trading power in the G3's favor.

I still think that the G2 had good enough battery performance that the screen hit by the G3 might not affect most people, if it is less than the G2. Not sure, but I think that most of us are happy if we can do the usual and have plenty left at the end of the day to not worry. I don't think that the G2 was on the margin for that. Plus - removable battery and other strategies.

But barring other parts and software tricks you can't get something for nothing, and it stands to reason that the screen is something.

I find prerelease reviews very fun but usually no more than that.

No one is reviewing final software, whatever release dates will be met regardless and barring a miracle, early adopters will be telling them about everything that their tests and plans missed.

I only expect a device to be good enough at release, then proper after the first service update in the first month or so.

I'm used to HTC but I don't think that they're alone that way.

I wonder if HTC has also thought of spiking to develop their phone to 810.

I'm just going to say it.

He took a mashup of other articles and twisted them until he had a new story invented from whole cloth.

I'm not sure what you mean by spiking.

Sampling won't begin for at least another month and it takes months for both the chip producer and the phone manufacturers to go from sampling to production.

There's no secret method to change that even with more money.

Things are going to have to be retooled and machines changed in a big way. That takes time and money.

The first test wafer is going to cost well in excess of a million dollars and *many* of those are going to be consumed by new manufacturing defects and testing. That takes money and then more time.

I've spent a *lot* of time on the floor and in R&D where your SoCs come from, helping with new processes.

Please trust me on this, things take time to do properly.

Before the 810 comes the 805.

You improve in stages or risk losing huge sums of money and depressing the family dog.

And I know that you can't have anything against the dog, he's a good boy, yes he is. :)

810 mass production is apparently next year. The 801 and 805 will be milked until the diminished return curve intercedes. The 810 will be planned based on that forecasted point.

To quote Mr Krabs from Spongebob: Money money money.

Wow, can tend of thousands of Koreans be wrong?

LG G3 sales three times higher than the Galaxy S5 in Korea

G3 seems to be doing pretty well in its home country. But that article is misleading because S5 had slow first month sales in home due to sales ban on their carriers. Globally S5 already broke both S4, S3 sales record in first month of release. It would be interesting to see first three months of global sales of both.

Samsung managed to pull global release of S5 on 04/11 on every major carrier across globe as they said at MWC. I think that's quite remarkable whether you like or dislike them. So far G3 is only released in Korea right after the announcement on 05/27 and still LG is not giving any clue when and where G3 will be released with what spec. LG did good work on G3 but they still got some catch up to do when it comes to launching flagship properly.

G3 will go on sale in UK July 1, later in the rest of Europe.

I signed up for their US availability email here : LG G3: Release Dates, Specs & Latest News | LG USA

Great catch! I forgot about that.

I predict the G3 will be available during the first week of July... ish.

I also "boldy" predict VZW will offer a 3/32, but I will end up not owning it due to the G3 being a throttle demon. The irony fits ;)

Either that, or they will only offer a 2/16 and it is not a throttle demon. Either way I end up not getting it.

Signed,

Negative Ned :) ..... :( ;)

Added: Where are the Korean translated to English reviews? Surely there are some. They get so many devices there, they are bound to be jaded.
