Root [Merit] Complete ZTE Merit Guide: Root, Flash Recovery and Install New ROM (with links)

Another question, after I deleted the folders that were added onto my sd card when i plugged it into my laptop, now (I dont know if its just the way the one.three rom works or not) but my android at the top has disappeared and I turned on usb storage, is that normal for it to not show up now?

Are you refering to a nandroid, which is the very first thing that is done after getting CWM recovery installed?

There is a stock, early build, ROM available. I can't post links yet, otherwise I would. You can, however, check out my G+ profile. I have written a lengthy howto on there and it has a link to the rom.

I followed the guide up till the first reboot, and after that when i type in adb shell, the icon isn't a $ anymore but it is a # . Every command after that gives an error message of "adb: not found.". What did I do wrong? I followed through each step exactly, I even copy pasted every command line.

When you get the # sign it means you are in the root terminal $ is the nonroot terminal.

Are you using windows or linux?

Sorry for the late response, I continued trying to get it to root, which it has. I managed to root it without using the terminal #, instead I typed in the last few commands on the normal windows command line. I installed the one.three file to see what it was about but now I can't access my phone with ADB anymore =/ I installed the given drivers but it still says: Error: device not found. One issue after another :)

Is there a way for me to do a reboot recovery mode without using CMD?

Either use a terminal emulator (I like Shell Commander), or power down then hold (vol. up + home + power) to kick into recovery mode. Also, the # means you're still in the linux shell, your phone doesn't have adb does it? ;) To get back to adb, you just needed to type "exit" twice.

I had already tried the terminal actually, when I typed in exit if moved to the next line and just sat there. When I tried any adb commands I got acess denied.

I've also tried server-kill and that doesn't help.

That's the think though, I can't even get to $ let alone #, it can't find the device to even start the process. and as I said the terminal doesn't allow me to do anything.

well when I try any commands it literally says permission denied, and when i type exit, it moves to the next line but doesn't do anything past that.

Never mind, I wasn't in # on the terminal on the phone itself, I typed "su" in and I got permissions to reboot recovery. I can now get into the CWM Recovery console. :pound:

Thank you for the help guys. The next thing I need to do is find an up to date ROM, hopefully I can manage to get one of at least Ice Cream Sandwhich or better yet Jelly Bean. I've been searching for something for awhile now but I've kind of given up on it tbh :dontknow:

The closest I've gotten to ICS was getting to the second splash screen. While loading the system, it loses track of the vital jars unique to ICS. I need a new Merit/Avail to finish testing.

Sorry about the rom guys! I guess it was missing some files to begin with, for the one.three rom what is no-frills cpu do? and what apps can be safely deleted?

No-Frills is used for controlling your processors frequency (speed). If you want a sluggish phone with crazy battery life, keep it low. For sheer performance, max it out.

Under the system updates section it says storage card updates, please copy update package to image directory on storage card, how do I find the updates and copy them? Also my android keyboard keeps force closing so I downloaded the SlideIT keyboard, is there any better ones anyone would recommend?

I use Perfect Keyboard pro. MUCH better than stock, its lite and options are plentiful. Storage card updates is used when putting a zip (rom or kernel) in/on the phone. Make a folder named "image", put the zip in it, then select storage card updates. ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP FIRST. It will save alot of time and grief.
Edit- ZTE calls them updates due to poor English. Its really just a way to install mods, because updates happen ota.
