Root [Merit] Complete ZTE Merit Guide: Root, Flash Recovery and Install New ROM (with links)

Maybe, we're not on the same page, but, when I rooted using the t-card update zip, I put it in "image" then selected about phone, storage card updates. It took the phone back to build #B14, then the dialer code worked. The 1.5 kernel had to be installed with CWM, I was mistaken about the kernels.
 
That is correct, however the T-card update is a big binary file (go ahead, look for yourself). As far as I know, only official ZTE system "image.bin" files can be flashed this way. Now, I believe you can break this binary apart and have a 100% stock ROM.

I use Touch Pal. It has a few bugs in it but works almost flawlessly in text. out of the ones I've used it gets the word I'm trying for more often then the rest & is easy to add words to the dictionary. The draw back is it doesn't work well in if it is linked to the SD card. If you don't leave it on internal it has to be turned back on every time you power cycle the phone.
 
I was doing fine until I rebooted at 13 and got adb: not found

Read on another forum:

You can't type adb in the adb shell

So after 13 ignore the adb shell bit. Everything else was good to go!

Okay, wish I did not install the 'better' ROM, because now I only have 5 MB (on Straight Talk's default Merit, I had 40 MB) free. Where did all my memory go?

Go Locker is terrible >.<

I have Perfect keyboard linked and it works as it should. I froze Android keyboard with TiBU so Perfect is the default. Just don't remove XT9 keyboard, it's linked like the email app.
 
hey guys I just did all this and got it working. I was also reading threw posts and found most ppl on here are looking for the stock merit rom. I have one, saved it before I did all this stuff. Thanks Krystal very good job on the thread.

Also now the adb stuff won't work, is that because I went to a different ROM?
 
Ok finally after weeks of trying I finally have root and I found the simplest way to get it the way I got it was go to www.unlockroot.com and download the file, install it on your PC , open it and just click the button that says ROOT...simple as that not sure if this will help anyone but it def helped me since being a noob it was much easier than all the commands. and by no means am I taking credit for it all the credit goes to the developers...now if i can figure out how to flash recovery and install a new ROM I'll be good to go...And by the way forgot to mention after install plug in your phone and make sure USB debugging and unknown sources is checked and you'll have ROOT in a matter of min.

Yup and it eats the heck out of my free space.

Not sure if I did something wrong, but I went from around 40 MB free to having to delete some apps to have 19 free.

Trying to do it on a dif PC now.

Alright, the one.three Rom bit, when I go back to command prompt and type adb shell, nothing comes up (device not found, etc variants).

Earlier I re-installed the adb tools and what not. I renamed adb.exe 'adb.exe.exe' (something someone on some other thread did) and rebooted both the PC and the cell. When it came back for the first time since installing onethree ROM, my cell did the android icon and debugged (which has been set). Then it still could not be found, the adb shell.

So I rebooted the phone and the android icon didn't come back. I've rebooted the pc and cell a couple of times to no luck. I dunno what is up, but I can access my sd card if i switch it on. Just no debugging. So I can put in another rom.

I do not dislike the att bit it's just that, if i keep my apps I had on the internal HD from the Merit rom, I have no space so I can't have any. I uninstalled the calendar and calculator and stuff but am still at 20 MB of space that fluctuates to 15 MB sometimes then down to 17 or 19 and back down again. If anyone has any suggestions or a better rom to install I'd appreciate any help.

Clearing cache/fac reset/partitions/dalvik: 39 used 80 free straight talk stops working and phone acts like i'm on AT&T network

Restoring the backup/clearing only dalvik: 115 used 40 free straight talk works again

On the former the used number seems to be rising steadily like it did when i first ran the one.three also. Phone is not responding to adb after usb-ing it to the PC. It is still not displaying the android icon but will still accept usb-sd connections. Should I try another rom?

My signal is a little poor as well, which may be why the 39-80 did not work, but it never got even one bar while it did on the restore.
 
Factory Reset. The Debuging will start working but you have to fix the APN settings. Signal only looks poor. it is probably more of a true reading then the other ROM. Mine seem just slightly better as far as talking on it. The battery will drain like crazy for a few days.

I rooted my St phone to one three. The cell's already St. Do I just need a new sim after I fact reset?


Or do I need to fix apn settings? How?
 
I tried to click on those links.. but cant open them with winrar.. or am I supposed to download them onto my phone? I tried clicking on the link with my phone too but the download failed.
and what is adb tools? and where do I get it? I cant find it in the app store.

Before I do it, I wanna get the sets straight, but thanks for your help so far:
1. Turn phone on to CWM recovery
2. Clear all of the caches entirely (reset factory/clear disk and dal. cache)
3. Install the one three rom by zip in recovery
4. Restart after the installation
5. Use Straight Talk's APN settings from their site in the menu and I'll be on ST again

Assuming that's right, should I back up what is on there? Should I re-download my cell apps from Google Play and get my contacts by synch? Should I pull my SIM card out the back before doing all this?

Always make a backup before major changes. Follow the list you posted and leave sim in.
If the backup is unneeded, you can always delete it from the SD.
 
im haveing trouble with number 14 install su! i can not figure out why it keeps telling me push not fount or file not found. can someone please help?

With the backup added I have about 50 MB, there must be something on the phone taking up tons of space.
One.Three is about 4.5 MB unzipped, so shouldn't the ROM be about that large on my phone as well?
I guess I may have to download the apps from google play since it's being weird about the size. I've deleted the cache and factor reset and it's still a pretty big file :-/
