I have a newer prevail. It's a 2.3.6 fa-19 build. Is the only way for me to root it, to use Odin and have to do the factory wipe

Yes. I would recommend flashing the EJ06 version since most people get better radio/3g signal with it rather than FA19. Then install CTMod 3.5 or CM7 . You don't need to worry about your phone updating because CTMod and CM7 will not get it. If you have good radio and 3g reception right now, you can still use the FA19 version.... your choice. If you have questions about either of these ROMs please post in their threads.

If I have a working PREVAIL_M820_FA19_Rooted_CWM on my phone, then what custom kernels can be used with it? I see two versions of genocide kernel, one saying for ext /system partition and the other saying for rfs /system partition...

That one should be RFS. (ext /system would only be found on the Halfass ROM or the other custom ROMs)

Nice to hear that FA19 is working well for someone. Just goes to show that it doesn't have ill effects on all phones.
Make sure you go into Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks> 3G data and check box it.

I did the same thing and noticed much the same effects. I do differentiate between the ROM and the modem though.
The ROM was gutted of CIQ. But then so are all if the custom Roms. I run CM7 anyway and am recently lusting after MIUI.
The modem has given me some problems, but it is hard to differentiate them from those caused by recent Boost upgrade activity. The last few days I get excellent 3g for some reason. Maybe somehow related to the Kato kernel?
I would probably still get better results with the old EJ06 modem. I think it might also fix some recent Google Play problems since I flashed the Kato kernel.

I'm having a bit of a problem with odin. I'm trying to flash my phone back to stock so I can root it so I can then flash it to an HTC evo (I have the Samsung prevail running GB FA19 on boost) when I plug it in odin 4.43 it wont recognize my phone but odin 1.85 will, but it's reading it in 0:[COM4] but I know my phone is in COM3.
I've re-insalled drivers re-started my laptop when needed installed kies or whatever because I was told it downloads a bunch of drivers, made sure kies was not running tried different usb ports; nothing changed.
I know the ports work because I've used cdma and all the other programs needed successfully up until I realized i needed to root my phone to continue flashing it to the evo.
I'm at a loss of what else to do to get odin 4.43 to read my phone.

You use the odin version thats provided in the zip file here.

does it have clockwork recovery?
this may sound like a real bone head question but where is the odin version provided here? I only see links to the image files, no odin.
Is that wrong? I'm kind of new to Android coming from blackberry a few months ago. I'm still learning the ins and outs of it all.
It didn't always have fa19, I had it nicely rooted then my son was playing angry birds and when he gave it back he told me that it said something about an update so he did it for me and bam fa19 it was, and root no longer worked.
I never installed clockwork because I read it's glitchy with the prevail.
My cousin moved from the evo to the iphone and gave her old phone to my son because his ipod touch stopped working (no biggie since it was my old 1st gen and rather old anyway) but I don't like the idea of my 8 year old having a play phone that's far better then mine and was hoping to flash the evo to boost and give him the prevail to play with.
