[Official Discussion] Huawei Ascend 2.1 - 2.2 Firmware Upgrade (Info updated as received!)

if you want @metro google the .apk file, or you can download the update from the metro website and use option 2 to install it...but if you want to go the easy way, use the fastboot method, and btw you cant brick this phone...

Hi I am a cricket rep and I had a customer trying to use bluetooth voice command on the Ascend. It seems as though the version 2.1 android OS does not support this feature. I continued in my search to help my customer use this feature. I have been reading forum after forum and decided to call Huawei to get a straight answer. Huawei has stated that there is NO date set for the release of this update to 2.2. Could be tomorrow could be never...Exact words from the representative. So with this in mind, does ANYONE know how to get the bluetooth voice command to work on a 2.1 OS???

The update is technically outside of Cricket and Metro's hands Huawei is doing it. (Which is why they upgrade before the Kyocera droid, cause it's the brand not the carrier doing the upgrade) As for self-righting this, there is no way...technically. The Ascend has this cute little "**** you I quit" reset feature. Which is, when the power is off, press and hold, [Power ] [End], [Volume up], keys. Factory hard reset, you have to call metro to reactivate the phone or take it to cricket/Metro and pay a little for them to do it. but you save your phone. Rooted or not you'll get it back brand spanking new and have to redownload all of your aps and whatnot.

More on that here.

All you have to do is *228 and it will automatically reprogram, no need to take in store :)

I'm new to siging up here but I have been reading the forums for a while now. When I first got my Ascend from metropcs I had it rooted and themed thanks to you guys here. I recently d/led the official 2.2 from the @appstore on metro and now I'm having trouble having fun with my phone. I've rooted it via Gingerbreak 1.2 and that has worked. I used Root Explorer to read as R/W instead of R/O. With the root explorer I can only remove certain apps but not all. I've used AntTek to freeze the others but it blocks it from doing anything and says the folder is R/O even though I choose R/W. To make this short is there a quick step by step guide to install CM7 AFTER the 2.2 update (sorry all the threads I searched for are from the 2.1 status) And if not thats ok, I wouldn't mind staying with the FroYo 2.2 since it is faster than 2.1 but I just can't modify it or delete the bloatware with root explorer or any other app. It keeps saying permission denined, R/O only and I don't get an option to switch to R/W/

I work for cricket and I know ALOT about the phones amongst other technological media. Don't knock us all! I know most have not a clue, but some people do take there jobs seriously. AND I happen to make quite a bit of denero.

THis is a response to a post farther back.

trying the 2.16 you posted. I don't know what version I have but it didn't work. I deleted the /cust folder but when i rebooted it was back with all the apps.

yea the previous version of RE I had let me set the mount from R/O to R/W on main directory, but when I went into any folder after that the option disappeared and I couldn't change the preferences. But with the 2.16 the option is available on any folder I open =P

Glad to be of service. Yeah I will say once u get the turdware off, the rom runs pretty damn smooth and fast too.

yea i must say the stock 2.2 runs alot faster than the rooted 2.1 i had with tweaks. still at the 2.2 stock minus the bloat now, havent decided what browser or memory/cpu tweaks i want to install. CM7 seems to have everything I want but I don't know how to install with 2.2 on my phone. I tried to install CWM via ultimate customization thread and after i debug booted (volume down+end call+power off) my phone rebooted and re-installed 2.2 back to stock lol. Think i'll leave it alone till I find a thread that will help. Until then I'll freeze my bloatware and add tweaks as i see fit. Only problem I'm having now is that my market won't download anything. I click an app, it says starting d/l and just hangs there for days. Been having to use 4shared.com but alot of the apps i get from there are hacked/cracked.

Like you said earlier Android 2.1 does not support it. Sorry it's a no go. a handicapped person asked the same thing a couple months ago on here. If they really need it they are going to have to use CM6 or CM7, unless Cricket decides to update. Huawei has already done it for Metro so it shouldn't be a major problem.

the official froyo update has finally been released simply go to the metro app store on your phone and click on ascend software update then follow the instructions on your phone... its about damn time they finally realeased it...
Note: it is not in the android maket it is in the app store on your phone. if u have any trouble finding it on our phone check out this link Huawei Ascend (MetroPCS) Android 2.2 Froyo Update Available [Download] - Gadgetian

pssss! we know... lol

If its huawei doin the update. . Umm why they only do it for metro... ppl make no sense!

Because Cricket is greedy. They want to make you buy another phone... I'm just going to wait a little longer, and if they don't release the update soon, I'll just join the rest of the majority and root it, rom it, and get rid of the bloatware and be happy. :)

Tru. . Cricket used to be horrible when they first popped up here in da 210 ... over priced cheaply made basic as hell phones. . Literally made you pay for everything from vm to flexbucket ..sometimes would make you pay your bill a few months ahead customer service closed at like 5 pm. Ugghh just lil things so i had avoided cricket till i got the ascend as a gift n unfortunately had to transfer my pocket number to cricket since they had just bought pocket out.. so whn i did tht cricket charged for the phone number porting and first month of service charging over 300 for all tht. . But least they've gottn a LIL better... but it'd be nice to get a break from em as in they neeeda quit their bs lolz

Ok so like i have said. I downloaded it when it was first available, used Gingerbreak to root it. Then had to use Root Explorer to make the directory R/W so i could delete out all the metro crap ware.
Boot Animations still sucked, boot time was still incredibly slow.
Oh and once you do the upgrade CMR 2.0 no longer works on your phone you have to use one of the 3.0 versions...Learned this after flashing it back to 2.1. Somehow if you do the upgrade they have it hard coded to still screw you over.

Overall Metro did what they said they would do. They did issue a 2.2.2 update, and the way they hard coded and hid everything shows why it took so long. Basically they wanted to make it impossible for people like us on the forum to customize the phone to our liking.

I've had no issues using any version of CWMR. Metro did the same crap with the TOE, and I've been saying they would prolly do the same BS with this and they did. But its like me and many others have said, CM6/7 is the best ROMs out for the Ascend hands down.
