[Official Discussion] Huawei Ascend 2.1 - 2.2 Firmware Upgrade (Info updated as received!)

Hey everyone, I've searched the forums to see if this problem has happened to anyone else, but I couldn't find anything.

Basically, I've got a Huawei Ascend on MetroPCS and recently updated the OS to 2.2.2 Froyo, via the official MetroPCS update. Since then, it has constantly been restarting, about 10 times a day at a guess. I can't figure out a pattern, sometimes it happens when it's just on the table unattended, sometimes it happens whilst I'm using it. Sometimes it happens 3 times in an hour, and sometimes it goes 3 hours without a problem.

The only thing I've noticed is that when I go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Running Services there is a service running called 'Firmware Update'. To the right of that it says the mb size (currently at 3.2mb and increasing) and just underneath it says 'Process: com.huawei.android.dmclient'.

There is also a sub-item underneath the 'Firmware Update' row that says 'Firmware Update' followed by 'Started by Application: touch to stop'. It's also got a timer to the right (increasing).

I've noticed that this has been running every time I've looked, after numerous restarts. I'm guessing that what is happening is that something is downloading the firmware and updating itself, and restarting the phone upon completion. However, it seems extremely strange that this is still happening 3 days after me updating the OS.

It's annoying that I can't find any way to get more information on the firmware update, such as which process/application is requesting it. Or is it the process 'dmclient' that's requesting it - or is that purely the actual update process, rather than the actual application that's getting updated?

I'm entirely confused. I'm thinking of just restarting the whole install process (if that's possible?) in case something went wrong. Any advice would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot folks.

I have been having the exact same issue. So frustrating. Hopefully you get an answer soon. I will be keeping an eye on this. Thanks for posting this question.

The roms have probably not been installed correctly. I would suggest uninstalling the froyo os. I had the same problem the first day when I updated my fascinate but it only did what you're experiencing twice. Uninstall the update and try it again. If the problem persists then I suggest uninstalling it again and leaving it be. After all it is under MetroPCS and it could be a glitch. MetroPCS doesn't exactly have the best phones.

Hi, I was just wondering if it's safe to delete the dload file of the metro 2.2.2 update now that its installed on my phone. Its such a huge file just hangin out on my sdcard. I'd like to get my 100+mb back. ;)

@ CPRS - Thanks for the solution. How do I uninstall the Froyo update please? It says on the MetroPCS site that once installed you can't revert back to 2.1.

Thanks.

reverting back to stock, ok power down the phone and download and extract this to your desktop MetroStockRecovery-SCRIPTS.zip after you done that press and hold vol down, end key and tap power, your phone should be on the white huawei screen and it should stay there plug your phone to the computer via usb cable, now open the folder that you extracted and run both of these file, first run fastboot-windows you will see a black box come and leave quick, next run metroPCSStock-windows.bat than another black box will pop up and it will do its thing, once it finishes the phone will automatic reboot itself. ;)

Just thought I would go ahead and update on the latest in the seemingly never ending saga that has become my 2.2 update.

I left the phone plugged in, on the android screen still when I went to bed and woke up all excited to see if, laziness damned, it would have finished updating. Much to my dismay..still the same screen with those same powder blue android letters.

Finally ready to call it quits, I took it to a dealer around here who said he would take a look at it. He tried every trick he could think of but to no avail. He said he would be getting his shipment of froyo updates on sd cards the following day, but to not hold out much hope since he couldn't get it to do anything beyond freeze on the huawei screen or the android one. He then charged me 10 dollars, so I flipped his table over and ran before he could collect it.

Ok so he didn't charge me, but that sounded cooler than "We parted ways".

I called customer support and complained about all the ill will they were building with me through the runaround and the poor updates, and demanded they give me compensation. They agreed to a 10 dollar credit towards my bill and I was satisfied.

I decided to then call the store where I originally purchased the phone, and he said he couldn't help either but gave me the number to the dealership support. I called, talked at length with a tech service guy only for him to reveal there was nothing he could do. I asked if he knew of anyone who might be able to, at which time he connected me to their smart phone tech service mega ultra group...2000.

He ran through everything he could think of, then everything he could find on his screen..even went to his supervisor for help. Nothing. Brick brick brick brick brick.

During my lengthy discussion with him, I asked if the number of bricks that seemed to have been built via this update had anything to do with the update being removed so quickly from the website. He told me that "the official statement from metro pcs is that there were simply too many downloads occurring at once and it overloaded the server." He did say though "I'm sure with the number of reports we've had...it didn't help things." I'm guessing that this is an unofficial implication that metro knows the update was bugged and are attempting to fix it while also not admitting to anything on their part.

After every scenario proved useless, he told me to just go to the local corporate store and see them. He told me that they would try to fix it, but by now he doesn't see how they would be able to..but that's ok since I'm under warranty and they will just replace the phone for being a technical issue. I said I understood, and that was that.

Since it's 3 and rush hour is horrible where my corporate store is, I'll wait until tomorrow and go in before work. I'll update the forum on what happens with me in case anyone else runs in to this same problem..even if this doesn't help, at least you know you're not alone.

tl;dr

(1) updated phone to 2.2, it bricked
(2) metro dealership couldn't fix it
(3) metro tech support couldn't fix it
(4) is covered under warranty since it's a technical issue, may get a new phone.

Dragged my "Desktop Replacement" Laptop to McDonalds.... Tethering won't quite cut it for this download. Thinking of getting a Droid X off Craigslist, but still want this one up to date when I switch it over for the wife.

For all those who have had problems updating, download the M860B617dload.zip file, unzip it on phone with the androzip app from the market which is free of course. Then copy the dload file onto the sd card where it shows all main folders. Then go to settings, sd card, update via sd card. Make sure you have at least 52% charge on battery before updating. Simple and easy.

This may have already been discussed somewhere, but I haven't been on in a while and there's too much to go through.

Ok so I have done the upgrade, rooted my phone with Gingerbreak, and have successfully removed all the bloatware with RootExplorer. But things aren't quite the same. The problems I'm having with the upgrade is I'm noticing that all of my apps seem to randomly auto run A LOT more than they did with the 2.1 (draining my battery life quicker). Is there anyway of setting the phone to not do this? Also I noticed that no matter how many times I unclick the "sync apps" option, my phone always goes back to syncing apps all by itself. Can anyone please help me or is there anywhere to set the phone so these things aren't just randomly going on. Also where the hell is the eBay app? It's nowhere to be found in the app market. I've found it via the web on the phone, but when I go to d/l it the phone tells me it can't. Any info on how I can go around this?

Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Thanks for your help. If I need completely re-install the 2.2 OS, do you know where I can download the update from please? It's gone off the MetroPCS website and your dropbox link has got too much traffic at the moment I think (there's an error that says 'This account's public links are generating too much traffic and have been temporarily disabled').

Thanks a lot.

been reading up some more .. apparently there has been success with the Ascend and QPST ... updating of the prl and mms settings seem to be positive .. ill do some testing and let ya know what i come up with .. be great to flash it over to 2.2 metro and update settings with QPST .. been a while since ive used the program .. but its always been very handy

I recently upgraded my phone to 2.2 and I wish to delete bloatware. I have never rooted a phone before (only jailbroke a couple of iphones before). But im not sure how I can root my phone with 2.2.

I've tried rooting it with z4root but my phone never seems to reboot.

I had z4root working fine with 2.1, but now that I have upgraded it doesn't seem to work.

Edit:

I figured it out, see below for details...
