I'll take whatever I can get with this.
This is SO much like the old Incredible days.....perhaps once again, everything we need to know is in the "mysterious cardboard box".....being driven around all the back roads until the time of the great unveiling....CRAP. Kappy, Nashdroid, Anonimac, Montana Man.....WHERE ARE YOU GUYS??? Don't leave Steven58 here all alone to beat the bushes for info!! We need dates! We need times!!! We need hope!!! I am OLD and could go ANYTIME!! The employees at my local Verizon store(blessed little know-nothings) hide when I pull into the parking lot!.......sigh,.....there, I feel better.
Didn't think I could like anything better than my Incredible.....but the Prime,.....oh my.....

Gram,

I forgot about Montana Man's box! Wow! Unfortunately, all of the members you mentioned have faded away. :(

Anon became a mod for a time but got to busy and wasn't around. I'm the only one left. We need folks who can leak us INFO!!!!!!

:)

One other question, does it bother you guys at all the the Prime might have a 5 megapixel comparing to the 8 that phones are being released at now ?

I have personally had a 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss on my Nokia for many years now, and was expecting something a bit higher. .at the same time I know that its the sensors that would matter. .but after so many years of a GREAT 5 meg camera on my phone I don't feel that this camera on the Prime would be any upgrade for me. . .Just wanted to get your thoughts on the camera part of this phone considering where other devices are at.

And this thing BETTER be on T-mobile.

Welcome to Prime forum and it's really great first post.

Regarding your concern on 5MP camera sensor, I don't think it's would matter much for good image quality. 8MP is more like bragging right and doesn't necessarily guarantee better picture quality. It depends more on the quality of camera lens module and image processing firmware. Cramming too many pixels into small sensor area is hurting image quality due to excessive noise and noise reduction algorithm. Also Samsung did good job on 5MP camera on SGS. So I wouldn't be too worried on 5MP camera on Prime.

Well an 8meg still is better than a 5meg if they have the same sensors and lenses. And when we see the SGSII being made by samsung with an 8meg, it only makes me scratch my head if the prime comes a LONG time later with a 5. .especially considering samsung makes both devices.

It would be like moving backwards if you ask me. And we all know they can do much better than that considering nokia n8 was released with a whopping 12meg Carl Zeiss lens camera. (I understand that its a milking the customer game, and give it to us one little bit at a time, but come on we know technology has gone well beyond that)

I don't know, maybe its just me, but I feel that just a 5meg is a letdown for a camera these days. .If I hear a phone has a dual-core processor ranging from 1.2-1.5ghz, a brand new OS, 1gb of ram aaaaaaaand . . .a 5 megapixel camera!!. . don't know but it just makes me scratch my head like huh ? why?

Okay, I wasn't going to respond earlier, but... What on earth can you do with an 8MP camera that you can't do equally well with a 5MP camera??

Are you printing poster-sized images? Very few people do this. Are you cropping tiny portions of the image and hoping they'll be sharp enough to be usable? If so, then what you really want is a better optical zoom (and especially a robust image stabilization feature), not more megapixels.

The point is, so many people just want a really big number for megapixels and it gives them absolutely no benefit. They fill up hard drives and flash cards with four megabyte image files that are only useful to post on a website when they're resampled back down to maybe 1MP and compressed to 200KB. You already have more megapixels than you need, so please ask the manufacturers for features that actually matter!

lol what I'm doing with an 8meg camera is exactly all those things that you mentioned and more. . the fact that I would have the option to do that would be GREAT. .I don't see a single reason on earth why they wouldn't up the camera.

By what you are saying, we were fine with a 3 megapixel 8 years ago. The fact of the matter is that technology moves forward and gets better and more powerful, and just because you can't find use for it, others sure will.

If things are to be taken in the way that you look at them, than you can hate and RANT on EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THIS FORUM about wanting these dual core cell phones that run at 1.5ghz, and 1.5GB of ram. That's ridiculous, but we want it, and than we ask for more. (and thats EXACTLY why a QUAD-CORE processor is almost here, and a phone should have it ny late next year "Tegra 3"). .lol why in hell would they even make that ? ? That's not needed right ? ?

If we were to continue looking at things the way you are saying than this device is simply not for you because you should be good with a simple clam shell. (cuz why on earth would you need all this power on a phone ? ? what are you doing with it?)

I'm not trying to make you sound stupid, but you need to understand what I'm saying when I simply say that a 5megapixel camera is OUTDATED.

lol do you not like to be up to date with technology or something ?

let me just put it this way. . a 5megapixel camera on a phone is such a 5 year old thing. And when people say 5 years in technology, THAT'S A LOT

Having a phone in 2012 made with just a 5meg should be embarrassing to the manufacturer if you ask me.

I guess I simply could be spoiled since i've already had a 5meg for 5 years and that's why I feel this way, but even if I wasn't spoiled, all that Samsung would have to do is simply look at EVERY other powerful device being released today, and since months ago. . they all include at LEAST an 8meg, and having a powerhouse phone like this being released with just a 5 is astounding.

Come on now man speak logically. .just look at the devices surrounding you, and that should tell you something.

Blue-

Somewhere in that rant of yours was some good information. :p Normal, everyday users, like me, are under the impression that more = better. I guess it's not the case with phone cameras. Thank you for that tidbit of information. Next time, you don't need to rant, though, okay? :) (color added for purposes of symmetry. :p

On the OTHER hand, whereas it's true that I don't know thing one thing about cameras, I did notice something on my video recorder. I took my daughter to a Star Trek convention in NJ. As we were watching Nichelle Nichols (Ohura) speaking I video'ed some of it. It was awful and grainy. I took the video using my DX's video running CM7, which is unable to run 720p HD, due to the rom's software limitations. The videos came out horrible. I switched back to stock rooted Gingerbread in order to have full camera functionality. With my GB video, I took a 5 minute video of my son's "metal" guitar solo at Berklee, a couple of weeks ago. The file was huge to upload onto Facebook, but boy was it crisp and clear.

I realize that perhaps 720p has nothing to do with 8 megapixels, but that leaves the sense, in my mind, that more is indeed better.

Come on guys, bring it in. Come on now.

I kind of agree with everyone. I don't need anything bigger than 5MP, because all I do is take a picture of, say, being at a game or whatever, and then show some friends on my phone later. If I was taking pictures and printing them out and framing them, I'd want at least 12MP. 8MP probably IS better than 5mp, but with the excellent quality of Samsung's light sensors, their 5MP is probably at least equivalent to 8MP on other phones, at least in low light or indoor conditions.

Video recording is a different beast. Most phones will soon be having 1080p video recording despite having a 5MP or 8MP still shooter. I hardly ever do video, but when I do, you definitely want that to be crisp and clear, in case you shoot it out to a TV and show your friends some vacation videos or whatever.

All this talk about megapixels just tells me that people are still stupid enough to think megapixels actually matter. They don't. It's all a scam to sell more cameras, as well as competitive pressure.

I would easily pick up the Prime with a badass 5MP camera. They could market it as "amazing picture quality", rather than how many megapixels it has. I mean, most Android phones take REALLY big crappy photos. So, would I take a really good image that takes up less storage space? Hell yeah!

If you want to keep arguing, at least know what you're talking about, and take marketing out it. Go take a picture with a Nikon D3100 (14MP) and the S3100 (also 14MP). Then tell me megapixels matter.

Let's not also forget this is a phone we are talking about! I don't plan to take pictures all the time with it. If I need good photos I reach for a camera. Yes, I. Each can argue its nice to have just in case but imo 5MP will do that just fine.

This.

I didn't spend $2K last year and $1500 this year in lenses for my 50D because I thought the megapixels would have made a difference in the 8x10's I sell my clients.

EDIT: I will say this though, I would never try a large crop, high ISO pic that was taken with a 5MP camera ;) and I'm dying for a 5D or a 1D that I probably will never be able to afford...well maybe if I stop buying lenses but LMAO to that!

Forgive me for being blunt, but you totally don't get it. For 95% of what consumers want for their pictures, a 3MP good quality digital camera will blow away every 8MP camera phone on the planet. Period.

I understand that you think more is always better for every technical concept that can be measured with a number, but you'd be wrong. If you have a '67 VW Bug that's already been hopped up to 200hp on the stock wheels / suspension / brakes, that Bug is not improved by adding another 100hp on the same crappy wheels / suspension / brakes. If you have money to spend at that point, more engine is the wrong choice.

Your phone's megapixels is not remotely the limiting factor in the quality of pictures you can take with it, and demanding more and more megapixels with the same crappy lens and sensor will not improve the pictures you get out of it!

I have to think there is some reason for the choice of 5MP over 8MP camera. The SGS2 does have an 8MP camera, so it can be done right? Well, what if there is something about camera phones that makes it difficult to process larger images properly? There must be a trade off somewhere. I hate to say it, but iPhone has never had a larger camera than 5mp and it consistently blows Android phone pics out of the water. I would much rather have a small MP camera that takes excellent pictures than a large MP camera that takes bloated pictures of off-color noise.

Because I don't want to always haul my Canon Beast around when I could choose a phone with a great camera in it and not worry about resolution or fuzziness or crappy outcomes of what could have been a really nice picture. What's the point of snapping pics on a camera phone if you're constantly disappointed that you can't print it out larger than 2"x3" (exaggerating here)

In case you haven't already seen it, here is an interesting article from PhoneArena.com about the Nexus Prime, which categorizes Nexus Prime fact from conjecture. Enjoy!

Nexus Prime: what we know, and what we don't
"....weed out what is "more likely true"......."educated guesses"..."what we should expect"......Plus only THREE facts.....????

Sorry....this article did NOT encourage me this morning.....maybe another bowl of Frosted Flakes will help.

HOWEVER.....who do we know at "Verizon HQ that leaked the rumored showing off of the P R I M E?" Surely, after all these years, someone, somewhere, has a nephew, cousin, ex-wife, brother-in-law on the inside. C'mon people.....THINK!!!

What exactly are we talking about here with reference to prints? Going from 5 to 8 mp does NOT make that much difference in print size.
megapixels.gif

Notice that as the print size doubles, the megapixels required increases geometrically. You can make nice 8" x 10" prints with a 6 or 8 megapixel camera, but to make a true photo quality 16" x 20" print, you need between 24 and 30 megapixels. Don't be fooled by manufacturers' claims that say you can make 16" x 20" prints from an 8 megapixel camera. While you certainly can make a print that size, it will not be true photo quality.

Design215 megapixels comparison and maximum print size charts

And for times when I don't want to lug my Rebel around and I really want to make sure I get good pics, I use this.

Ok guys, I received a text from my sister (who works at Verizon) and she tells me NOT to get the Bionic, or I will be very sorry.

She's had some inside info in the past regarding an imminent iPhone release, so I put some stock into what she says.

I asked her WHEN will the next big thing from Samsung come, and she said she doesn't know, but it won't be like the Bionic wait.

I then texted back "I caught you. You just confirmed Samsung is bringing something big to Verizon."

And she texted back: ;-)

Take it for what it's worth. It doesn't get us anywhere, and it doesn't add anything to what we already knew, but I'm still a little stoked about it.

Tell sis thank you for me!!!!!!!!!

Official note: let's be done with a camera talk okay? I'm preaching to myself here as well because I'm just as bad as you guys. ;)
