Yeah, but they lock their OWN phones down don't they? That's why Verizon is all over Motorola. They are also into locking down their own phones.

Yes, but remember that Google just bought Motorola, so things may be changing for them in the near future. I mentioned this before, but I could see Google buying a small carrier in the future and setting themselves apart from everyone with the OS(Android), the hardware(Motorola), and insert small failing carrier here. It's a long shot, but if I were CEO, it would be in the long range planning,

I think it's VZW that forces Moto to encrypt their loaders. I remember reading that the international version of Razr will be unlocked.

Interesting. Why would Samsung not bring that up in the presentation though? Not saying I think they will throw something else in there. I just feel like something like that missing would have a very specific reason to be missing.

I'm on my OG, so I can't easily check. But, if memory serves, Rob's hands on videos at the event shows the specs placard next to the phone. And, I'm pretty sure that it says OMAP 4460 on that placard....?

they would buy sprint, and still keep sprint employees and begin beefing up their network, and bringing in a new line of customer service.

just maybe :p

or would they start off big? think they may start off small with another carrier like uscellular or ntelos or something to that nature

A few things give some cred to release concerns on VZW, regardless:

1. VZW has been very vocal about not wanting unlocked FW devices on their network, due to repair cost issues and non-contract tethering.

2. VZW business model requires some VZW bloat, unless some special deal for Sammy.

3. VZW went out of their way to support the Razr and not even a token mention of the Nexus.

Still seems it is coming to VZW, but maybe items 1 and 2 are causing some confirmation issues.

This nonsense needs to stop.

The Motorola Xoom has an unlockable unencrypted bootloader. It is sold by Verizon. Samsung Fascinate (SG1) has an unlockable bootloader. It is sold by Verizon. The HTC Thunderbolt has an unlockable bootloader. It is sold by Verizon.

The phones which most certainly don't have unlockable bootloader. Motorola phones with MotoBlur. This is a motorola decision. Not Verizon.

This please.

There is obviously more to the locked bootloader story than Verizon blue, errr, I mean red meanies. I'm actually a little tired of the VZW bashing. This is America, we vote with our pocketbook. Enough said.

Quoted so people read it again.

I think I'll quote it again on the next page when we get there.

Maybe even the one after that.

Of Special Interest

So, I was up chatting with Rob off and on until about 4 am my time, aka dinnertime in HK.

First, (shout out to Han) I alerted him to this forum's interest in his hands-on review and while I can't make promises for him, I'm not going to be surprised if he finds time to swing by and interact with us a bit - with his present workload and travel schedule, all I can say is that I'm hoping it's soon.

His focus yesterday seemed mostly on two things - this nice comparison between the Gnex and the RAZR -

Galaxy Nexus vs. Droid RAZR (ninja'd by mfecik - and I'm WAY ok with that! :))

... and trying to get more info on carrier availability details (including the roller coaster decision that shall not be named :p ;)).

BTW - that link above includes a link to his hands-on impressions and discussions of the Gnex - if you've not seen that, I'll bet you want to. ;)

That's all I have at the moment, but I hope it merited the red banner for you cats. :)

Expect Missing Rob updates whenever Steven or I (or others (Phases?)) get them, we'll do our best.

Cheers, thanks!

If you can do it now they are running the deal for $149 plus an extended battery.

I know, but his upgrade isn't til 11/30. :( Could give him mine but then I'd hafta wait til then for a GNEx and I'm having enough trouble waiting til the 1-th. :D

I was going to say the same about my Xoom. In fact I think I already said it, I'm not sure why people are stuck on that. Some of the 10.1 Galaxy Tabs were shipping with unlocked bootloaders as well though I can't remember if any of them were LTE ones.

So Moto is lying? That is possible.

Honestly, I'm not banking on there being a pre-order period. I'm sure you'll be able to order it online on release day (for those who don't want a phone that's been pawed over by idiot salesmen), but with Verizon not giving much love to this baby, I'm not sure.

I have been of the mind set that vzw wouldn't give much attention to the GNex, as well; but now i'm not so sure. I doubt it will give a marketing blitzkrieg, but remember: vzw passed on the best selling phone on the planet (GS2) for this device. Vzw will give it some love and attention, cuz it has something "better" than the GS2. (Unless the "something better" vzw was referring to was the RAZR...)

Hey guys, just checking in. Up to my eyeballs in work. Thanks for the shout-out, Early. Hope you get us some info on carriers, so that some of us can just relax and chill a bit. :p

Yes, but I'm having some problems with this phrase, and I'm surprised no one else has brought it up (maybe I'm just stupid):

The phones which most certainly don't have unlockable bootloader. Motorola phones with MotoBlur. This is a motorola decision. Not Verizon.

Is this implying that Moto wants to lock down only the phones that have Motoblur on them? Because last time I checked, they all did, no?

Also, if it has nothing to do with Verizon and it's purely a Moto decision, then why the decision to lock down the Verizon version but not the overseas version??

Doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

Has there been any hint of an oleophobic coating to reduce skin grease on the screen?

Skin grease? Ugh.

Ok, peeps, going back to work. Check in later.

Have fun! :D

So pray tell why the US DRAZR will be encrypted while overseas it won't?

EDIT: Grrr Han, sniping me!

Lol. I see the dilemma. Because of my indecision about the GNEx and the Rezound I would happily hand over an upgrade now while there is a good deal and wait for both phones to get real usage and reviews. But that's just how I feel. I know a lot of people have no indecision about this and want the GNex as soon as it's available.
:D
