Root One Click Root For The Desire?

Cheers for the thread JB - very interesting read as the path you've taken is the one I think I'll be following sooner rather than later.

Congrats :)

Thanks to all those who helped me today. Much appreciated.

A whole day and all I've managed to do is root my Desire?! That's got to be some kind of terrible record, surely?!

I actually feel quite drained! Ha ha!

In a way, I feel glad that I've got it rooted.

However, due to the fact I now seem to have less internernal memory than I started with - mainly due to the apps I downloaded today to help back everything up - I feel quite disappointed in myself.

I did at least manage to remove the partition in my SD card, so I'll be ready to go again at a later date.

Even if people laugh their balls off at this thread, it will be worth it if it helps another person in the future! :D
And thank you for all the questions you posted here!
It really helped me!!!

Thought so. :D

I'm very impressed so far. I'm struggling to remember what apps I had on what screen though! :o
I first took pictures of my apps and my screens before I started to install LeeDroid. :D

BTW: Is it normal that it reboots several times after installation? I got the message that installation was complete and that the back button was activated so I went back and selected restart system.
But it has already restarted 6 times...

No problem at all, mate. Like I said earlier in the thread, if somebody gains some use from this thread and my experience, it will have been worth it. :)

It was all quite easy to be honest, but I wouldn't have found the courage to do it if it wasn't for the lads in here.

My main stumbling block and point of confusion was the partitioining of the SD card. Creating the partition was simple enough, but I was didn't know whether I'd made it or not. If you check DanFrance's sig, there is a way of checking that you have partitioned your SD card. However, this only works after you have flashed the ROM of your choice - or at least that's what happened to me.

Putting it very simply, this is all it takes:

1) Back up everything on your phone and SD card.
2) Root your Desire - I personally used UnrEVOked to do this - you can follow guides which can be found on YouTube.
3) Create a partition on your SD card using ROM Manager.
4) Flash the ROM of your choice - again using videos from YouTube and asking on here if you get stuck, or even to be guided along.

I wish I'd done the same! I took one picture of one screen to see if it worked - I then deleted it! Silly me! :D

It didn't reboot several times for me. It said the installation was complete, I pressed the back button and rebooted the device.

It then took a short while to boot up and I was then up and away.

Has it settled down yet?

Thanks for the thread Johnny, I am in the same situation now as you were in Step 1, could you clarify which guides you used for Unrevoked and flashing the ROM please?

Now you're rooted, get ShootMe from the Market (the app with the pink camera icon, NOT the crazy stick-figure cannon shooting thingy). Start it up, and it takes a grab of your screen by giving the phone a quick shake!

Of course.

I used this video to root using UnrEVOked.

It's for the EVO, but the steps are exactly the same.

I then used these videos to flash the ROM.

It's not as long a process as the video duration suggests. It only takes that long because the creator shows you a few things with text instructions etc.

Cheers mate. I was just about to make a thread asking what apps I should get now as I'm rooted and flashed. I've read about apps which can clear the cache of every app with a click of a button and a few other handy apps.

I just followed this guide and it's been on "pushing recovery" on unrevoked for a while now, should I be worried?

EDIT : never mind, all I did was forget to uninstall HTC sync, its got further now hopefully will soon be rooted :)

EDIT 2 : We didn't get root. This happens sometimes. Please restart and try again :(

Yep. You should be fine though.

I actually had to install and then uninstall HTC Sync - I left the drivers on my system though. Did you? If not, make sure you do. :)

You need to have had HTC Sync installed for it to work. ;)

I googled it and I found that I forgot to remove cache and user data.
So I did that and flashed it again.
Then it worked.
Now looking to get the partition...

EDIT: partition successfully created!: 480mb (406 mb free) :)

I first installed the custom HBOOT drivers using these instructions then installed HTC sync, then uninstalled HTC sync. When I plug my phone in it shows up as "My HTC" in device manager, should this be the case?

EDIT : now rooted. needed to reboot my windows box :)

EDIT 2: thanks johnny bravo again for this thread, it ranks highly in google!

A couple of apps for root users:

SetCPU - gives you access to processor clock speed and set up profiles.

Quadrant - a benchmarking program to check phone performance, great to test the updated graphics features of LeeDroid.

is this the one that you have to pay for I can see in the market?

No worries, mate! I'm just glad it's helped a couple of people. If it manages to help anybody else, then it's a welcome bonus. :)

Thanks mate.

Thats possibly "cachemate for root users"

Nice one, mate. I'll check it out. Do you use it? Is it any good?

Is there any advantage of installing a new ROM via the "old fashioned method" in the video than simply using the ROM manager gui?

Yes but depending on circumstances.

Don't use Rom manager but have a feeling it boots into the Rom once flashed. You may want to flash other things before boot

I have Rom manager but always flash from recovery.

In some ways Rom manager is the old method. Om the desire, before unrevoked, some were rooting using a method that flashed an engineering recovery, so we didn't have clockworkmod recovery. Rom manager was a good work around.

thanks for that, which method would you recommend for a newbie such as myself?

I have recently only just read that I may need to upgrade my radio and flash that too, so I've not looked into that, is that simple too? Should I read up on that first do you think?

P.S. Can I still use the market when you've flashed a new rom?

Rom manager is easy but you'll have to boot into recovery to flash the radio.

Just be careful that your phone remains powered ip throughout the procedure

I'm new to all this myself, as you can tell by this thread.

However, I followed the above guide to the letter and genuinely had no problems at all. Just watch the video and go along with what he says. Despite the picture quality not being the best, his actions and gestures make it simple to see what he is selecting and what buttons he is pressing.

I figured that he flashed the rom "the old fashioned" way for a reason, possibly because it's better, so I went with that.

I've not used ROM manager, but flashing from clockwork is very simple:

* reboot into recovery
* do any clearing/wiping if necessary (depends what you are flashing)
* select "install update from zip" (or something like that - can't be bothered to boot into recovery to check exact wording)
* "select zip from SD card" then find the zip you want to install
* repeat for as any other zips you wish to flash
* reboot phone

Flashing radios is exactly the same procedure - put the zip on your card, boot into recovery, flash, reboot. It will complete the install when you boot, so you'll see a little graphic (box, arrow and little android) while this is happening, then the normal boot starts. The first boot after flashing a radio is a long one, so don't panic if it seems to be taking a while - just sit tight and let it go.

Although the procedure is the same, flashing a radio is technically more risky because if it gets corrupted it can brick the phone. However, many people have done it many times without problems - you just don't want to interrupt it part way through, so don't try it with a low battery charge or with the back off the phone ;) But otherwise you should be fine.

Have you upgraded your radio yet Johnny Bravo?

one of my main reasons for rooting and upgrading from 2.1 is for improved battery life, and I feel the radio is the key to this. I'm about to embark reading up on which radio is which now. I'm on T-Mobile in the UK, and it may be my imagination but since I signed up to receive Orange's mast signal, I've experienced worse than normal battery life.
