Root Optimus Elite root with an apk

I've only heard good things about T-Mobile $30 5gig 4G/ 100 minute plan. Virgin is slow in Phoenix. My last speedtest.net 98 kbps down 158 up. Wifi has completely stopped working on my new Optimus Elite.

VMU's internet is garbage for me. If I am not on wi-fi I can almost watch my battery meter drop if I try and use the net.

I currently get about 4 hours of battery life if I leave 3G enabled while I'm out of the house. At home on wifi I get well over 14 hours of life (this is with use while the 4 hours of 3G is with only 4square check ins). Yes I realize that 3G drains more than wi-fi but this is quite a difference.

Indeed. I noticed that was quite severe on the stock ROM. I can't tell you for sure how much of an improvement it is on Tagged or Sleipnir, but when using 3G the drain has been much less severe than that for me. And, granted, I don't use it often, but it's worth a shot.

Ok so I'm am not technologically saavy in any stretch of the word, so half of the vocabulary in this thread is practically Chinese to me. When you connect the phone to the computer, does the computer need internet access and do you need to do anything specific on the computer other than enable USB debugging on your phone?

No worries. Every time I think I'm savvy in the world of Android terms, reading pretty much any of giantpune's posts prove me wrong. :D

The computer does not need internet access, no. It's like taking a flashdrive (that doubles as a computer) and plugging it in. However, I do recommend downloading and installing the proper drivers for Windows to interact with your phone (it can by default, but it can do it much better with the drivers). You can find those drivers here (LGVM696.zip).

Thank you very much, good sir! I just wanna ask one more thing before I proceed with doing the root.

I have never rooted a device in my life and I'm not proverbially "swimming in money." I have seen a lot of good results here about this root. However, how much risk is involved with this process?

You're very welcome. While there is always a risk, and always will be (as you will be the actual Admin of your own device, not just a User), if you use Poot from giantpune the risk is very, very minimal. To the point where everyone, if memory serves correctly, who has used it on their Optimus Elite have always had success and has not bricked their phone with it. Just be sure to follow everything to the letter (even more so because Linux, and therefore Android, is case-sensitive), and you should be good to go.

However, should any problem arise, with the rooting and CWM-installing (and ROM installing) processes, feel free to post them here in the forums or in the FAQ-Guide thread found here (http://androidforums.com/elite-all-things-root/620742-clockworkmod-optimus-elite-faq-guide.html). That guide, and the All Things Root guide that it has a link to, contain everything you need to know and should cover most questions you might have with regards to Rooting, the installing of ClockWorkMod Recovery, and Custom ROM Installing/Flashing.

OK, I did everything step by step, but Poot is telling me "Ministro can not satisfy your application dependencies"

What do I do? :(

Poot worked perfectly on my PCD Venture. Interesting to see an app written using Qt for Android, though evidently the latter still needs a lot of work. Scrolling through the log window was basically impossible.

(I was half-expecting the app to make a fart noise as it rooted the phone...)

When I tried to root my Venture, I keep getting
I keep getting
expected current to be 1:ffff
patching failed.

A demon materialized while pooting. Error code 22
su binary was not written.

And root check report it's not rooted.

I did many times. Same results. I occasionally get error code 64. None had worked.

It is not going to be compatible with every phone, giantpune has said this before. He can tell you if it will be compatible, but it won't be compatible with every device.

I have to say, this was the easiest and fastest root I've ever done. Upgraded to the Elite from OV and have to say I was concerned about the error 67. The root was flawless and doing a backup right now.

Clockwork Mod is next to get a nandroid. IMO, a must have!!!

Thanks for all your hard work. This is awesome to have my Elite Rooted!

Hi,

I just got a new Optimus Elite (which is BTW on sale at bestbuy right now) and tried to root as described in the first posting.
Poot worked fine - it showed everything like on the screen, internal rootcheck worked too and the "ls" showed su in /system/xbin/ with the permissions as it should.
However, the root checker from the play store as well as superuser from there said it has no root, same for Titanium backup...
When I use a terminal and do "ls /system/xbin" it still shows su with the right permissions (stays like this after many reboots now), but when I try to execute /system/xbin/su then I get a permission denied.

Any ideas what is wrong here?
There is nothing installed on the phone except the apps mentioned above and the normal system apps. I bought it, activated wifi and a new google account to use play store, but that's all.

Welcome to the AndroidForums, mec6975!

What permissions and ownership do you see?

The su binary needs the suid permission bits and the file owner and group as root / root. Here's what I have on my GNex:

C:\Users\Scary Alien>adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
shell@android:/ $ su
shell@android:/ # ls -a -l /system/*bin/su
-rwsr-sr-x root root 85096 2008-08-01 08:00 su
lrwxrwxrwx root root 2012-09-26 17:05 su -> /system/bin/su
shell@android:/ #

Its not an issue where the SuperUser app was told to deny root was it?

Cheers and again, welcome to AF!

Thanks scary alien!

No, it's not a problem with the Superuser app that I selected "deny root" - it never asked for root access, just said when started that it can't be installed. Also Titanium Backup simply said root is not available without any popup about allowing root access.
ls in a terminal directly on the phone shows:
-rwsr-sr-x root root 22364 2012-12-18 16:01 su

Well, just said so and one factory reset later it seems to work now.
What I did is a factory reset again, and then after registering the google account, download another Superuser app - this time Superuser by ChainsDD, before it was SuperSU which was downloaded after Rootchecker said it's not rooted. (BTW: Why is another app needed when there is already "su" in /system/xbin ? )
When I installed now "Superuser" it didn't say anything about that something went wrong. So I installed the terminal again and tried to execute /system/xbin/su and now it asked for permission :-)
So it finally worked now, thought I don't understand why it wasn't working before...

Thanks a lot for this rooting app!!! :-)

Cheers

Ah, I think I know what happened...some su binaries need newer versions of their app-counterpart: i.e., the SuperUser app (or SuperSU depending on what you are using).

I had similar issues with su / Superuser pairs after taking various OTA updates on my GNex. There were apparently issues between the su binary and the Superuser app that the new OS update required new an updated version of one or more of those components.

Good on you for figuring that out! :)

Cheers and happy rooting!

P.S. I do indeed agree this is an awesome root exploit by giantpune...we are lucky to have such a knowledgeable and helpful member with us here at AF :).

same thing happened to me, but i just ignored it and installed CWM and a rom on the phone. for whtever reason, root checked couldnt tell that the phone was rooted, but obviously it was.

yep, amazing apk. incredibly easy to use.

100% :-)
I remember the rooting on some HTC and Samsung phones... took long, had to setup adb and other things which no longer seem to work on 64bit linux...
So such method with a simple apk to root directly on the phone without anything else is really awesome!!! :-)
Thanks giantpune!!!
