VMU's internet is garbage for me. If I am not on wi-fi I can almost watch my battery meter drop if I try and use the net.
I currently get about 4 hours of battery life if I leave 3G enabled while I'm out of the house. At home on wifi I get well over 14 hours of life (this is with use while the 4 hours of 3G is with only 4square check ins). Yes I realize that 3G drains more than wi-fi but this is quite a difference.
Ok so I'm am not technologically saavy in any stretch of the word, so half of the vocabulary in this thread is practically Chinese to me. When you connect the phone to the computer, does the computer need internet access and do you need to do anything specific on the computer other than enable USB debugging on your phone?

No worries. Every time I think I'm savvy in the world of Android terms, reading pretty much any of giantpune's posts prove me wrong.
The computer does not need internet access, no. It's like taking a flashdrive (that doubles as a computer) and plugging it in. However, I do recommend downloading and installing the proper drivers for Windows to interact with your phone (it can by default, but it can do it much better with the drivers). You can find those drivers here (LGVM696.zip).
Thank you very much, good sir! I just wanna ask one more thing before I proceed with doing the root.
I have never rooted a device in my life and I'm not proverbially "swimming in money." I have seen a lot of good results here about this root. However, how much risk is involved with this process?
Poot worked perfectly on my PCD Venture. Interesting to see an app written using Qt for Android, though evidently the latter still needs a lot of work. Scrolling through the log window was basically impossible.
(I was half-expecting the app to make a fart noise as it rooted the phone...)
^Reboot and try again.
I did many times. Same results. I occasionally get error code 64. None had worked.
Hi,
I just got a new Optimus Elite (which is BTW on sale at bestbuy right now) and tried to root as described in the first posting.
Poot worked fine - it showed everything like on the screen, internal rootcheck worked too and the "ls" showed su in /system/xbin/ with the permissions as it should.
However, the root checker from the play store as well as superuser from there said it has no root, same for Titanium backup...
When I use a terminal and do "ls /system/xbin" it still shows su with the right permissions (stays like this after many reboots now), but when I try to execute /system/xbin/su then I get a permission denied.
Any ideas what is wrong here?
There is nothing installed on the phone except the apps mentioned above and the normal system apps. I bought it, activated wifi and a new google account to use play store, but that's all.
C:\Users\Scary Alien>adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
shell@android:/ $ su
shell@android:/ # ls -a -l /system/*bin/su
-rwsr-sr-x root root 85096 2008-08-01 08:00 su
lrwxrwxrwx root root 2012-09-26 17:05 su -> /system/bin/su
shell@android:/ #
Thanks scary alien!Welcome to the AndroidForums, mec6975!
What permissions and ownership do you see?
The su binary needs the suid permission bits and the file owner and group as root / root. Here's what I have on my GNex:
Its not an issue where the SuperUser app was told to deny root was it?
Cheers and again, welcome to AF!
Thanks scary alien!
No, it's not a problem with the Superuser app that I selected "deny root" - it never asked for root access, just said when started that it can't be installed. Also Titanium Backup simply said root is not available without any popup about allowing root access.
ls in a terminal directly on the phone shows:
-rwsr-sr-x root root 22364 2012-12-18 16:01 su

P.S. I do indeed agree this is an awesome root exploit by giantpune...we are lucky to have such a knowledgeable and helpful member with us here at AF.
Ah, I see. Interesting and good to know!Ah, I think I know what happened...some su binaries need newer versions of their app-counterpart: i.e., the SuperUser app (or SuperSU depending on what you are using).
I had similar issues with su / Superuser pairs after taking various OTA updates on my GNex. There were apparently issues between the su binary and the Superuser app that the new OS update required new an updated version of one or more of those components.
