Orange 2.2 update

maybe we could all try and have a voice when we see the bloatware? if we complain like vodafone users we could get froyo as it is meant to be??

Don't Orange have to send the ROM to Google for approval before they roll it out to customers. Correct me if i'm wrong but usually it is common knowledge as and when this happens and so far there hasn't been any word of this part of the process being completed ??????

There is alsready a facebook page trying to unite the Desire users on Orange. I posted the link here some time back.

Why 2 weeks? Specifically? I understand the potential need to reduce strain on servers (If that still happens in 2010  ) but on what do you base 2 weeks?

I'm sure that Vodafone made an announcement that it would take 2 weeks for the roll-out to successfully get to everyone.

I would therefore make the assumption that Orange would follow suit.

No hard evidence, more of a hunch.

:)

Android fans there has been a delay in receiving the 2.2 Froyo update from HTC, & we now expect it to be available mid-Sep. Apologies

conorfromorange

..would like to point out the delay on 2.2 Froyo is not related to Orange services on the device.

I tend to blame or Orange rather than HTC, Have the rest of the UK networks not got the update? And look at the disaster with the 2.1 update for the Hero

What a joke, Orange are so incredibly cack-handed when it comes to any handset support...

"Android fans there has been a delay in receiving the 2.2 Froyo update from HTC, & we now expect it to be available mid-Sep. Apologies"

That sounds like passing the buck to me, completely unprofessional and incompetent. Apparently there is less branding on the 2.2 release, so what exactly has caused the delay.

Conor is a PR shill, and it's his job to deflect criticism away from Orange.

"..would like to point out the delay on 2.2 Froyo is not related to Orange services on the device."

If they had the nerve to roll out a stock 2.2 build as an upgrade they could have had it with us ASAP, so of course it has everything to do with Orange services. How much work would have to go into the update if all they had to do was preinstall the APN names.

Orange HTC Desire Android 2.2 update delayed to mid-September | Android Community

This is ridiculous. HTC catering to needs of US rather than Europe. I guess that is what happens when you deal with US centric companies.

I'm leaning towards this being the fault of Orange as well, other networks have released it already meaning it was released to the networks & as stated in this thread Orange had said it will be realesed in so many weeks after they have tested it with there services, again insinuating they have it but are having problems.

You can bet it won't be mid-Sept too! Seems like we're having the same nonsense the HTC Hero users on Orange had to put up with... I can't see any reason why it can be rolled out for Vodafone (and work fine) but not for Orange... The Carphone Warehouse phones on the Orange network have it, why can't we??!

If Vodafone campaign was success full why not Orange?? We just need more people to sign up. Problem is I think most people who have Desire are not on Orange. There was a significant drop in Upgrade chatter after the Voda update. So it is that either there are not enough of us or not enough who care!

Sorry but you're living in fantasy land. There's a world of difference between supplying phones with network branding out-of-the-box and imposing branding on existing users by deliberately releasing it when they're expecting the Froyo update and thus more likely to install it.

It was the latter of which Vodafone was guilty and it made national headlines as a result. The former is something most networks do to some degree or other and have done for years and this will never change.

The thing is what they said is true to a degree, I can see HTC/Google not letting them through with another 'Orange' App filled ROM. They are probably trying to tell them to stop adding this shit. I am sure someone mentioned either HTC or Google where pissed at them with the original ROM they released.

I am interested to see when they release this ROM. I already rooted as soon as Froyo came out I kinda knew this was the only outcome. They didn't even release and of the OTA minor updates.

I think HTC is not blameless here. The reason being last week there was a great deal of news that froyo update on Droid Incredible had a major hiccup. Suddenly today, update over at the States arrived on schedule and Desire update got pushed back. What else can I deduce from that but that resources were shifted from Desire to Incredible. Also, I am no way a fan of orange, next time I am going to CPW.

Debranded using some online instructions, worked like a dream. Didn't need to unlock my sim. I read a few people had some issues with wi-fi or something and the solution was to do the debranding and updates without the sim card in. This did the trick. When I put the sim back in it reconnected to the Orange network and I have 2.2 running on my Orange contract Desire (minus the Orange bloatware)

Hi all, I've just been on the phone to Orange customer services (3g down) and whist i was on asked about the 2.2 update. Anyway she checked and said this weekend.... fingers crossed then!

This weekend? I really hope this is the case, although I'm not confident...

Still no 2.2 then :(

It's not the weekend yet. Or "4 weeks" for that matter (that's next weekend...). Call me cynical, but if I get 2.2 this weekend I'll eat my work Blackberry.

So, that rumour turned out to be a load of shite didn't it!

Over on Eurodroid there's a blog article that suggests the Orange OTA update could be released this Friday. Now, I remain sceptical, although that does kinda fit in with the original time frame given by Orange. Watch this space...

Cool. Thanks for updating us on this. I am still waiting for Orange to issue the 2.2 OTA, hopefully over the next couple of weeks.

Conor from Orange said it takes about 4 weeks to adapt upgrades to branded phones after the original release. As HTC realised froyo for Desire on 2 August, 4 weeks will be this weekend. However it is very hard to hide such release in the last week before release as the operators need to get various permissions from Google, htc, etc. Considering that there has been no such news about any permission seeking I doubt if there will be a release this weekend!

No Update Today. Disappointed but not surprised!! Orange is going to drag this out as there is so much bloatware on their phone. But I am paying

No I agree that HTC did seems to drop the ball from updates on the Hero I believe but people where pulling all sorts of dates out the air for Froyo and then getting mad when it didn't turn up.

Its fair enough if there is an issue stopping them from releasing a ROM for 2 weeks but this whole Orange delay sounds different. Mostly because you can bet its down to what they did to the ROM. Also HTC have nothing to do with the changes to the ROM its down to Orange.

Like everyone still looking at this thread I was waiting and waiting for Orange to pull there finger out and release Froyo for us people daft enough to buy direct from Orange, so in Friday after there excuse of yet another 2 weeks, someone else's fault etc etc I made myself a gold card using the gold card tool previously mentioned on this forum, downloaded the latest signed stock Froyo rom, bought myself a unlock code off ebay (just in case) and guess what after 10 minutes I had a stock un rooted, un locked 2.2 Froyo running Desire. Why I didn't do it as soon as the latest rom was made available I don't know, anyway so now I have a quicker device, apps2sd, google earth a lot more choice from the market place to name but a few. So am I glad they didn't release the update when they promised. And to end updating is easy as long as you have a working gold card as the ROM update will tell you if there is a problem before it nackers your phone.

Hi Baz,
Could you please link me to the instructions you used to create a goldcard please? I have found a few but if I can find some comprehensive ones that would make it easier. Did you need the unlock code in the end?
I have read if you turn it on and update to froyo without the sim and then restart with the sim, you dont need to unlock it?
Thanks

Ben

This is the thread I used.

http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/124085-rooting-tool-one-click-program.html

Most important things I took from it are

1. uninstall HTC sync but leave the drivers.

2. Install the modified drivers and read the driver.htm

3. Check the box that you are in USB debug mode.

4. Add the Radio and ROM to your MicroSD card in the root so not in a folder. Unzip both. People have had issues without updating Radio as well.

5. Don't panic when the exclamation mark appears, or the phone is slower to boot. leave in 5 mins at least.

6. Read the instructions carefully in the guide, then its a flawless process.

People like Dan & anoniemouse know there stuff so listen to them. I just tinker with the basics :)

This I used the ROM from here.

[ROM] Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N - xda-developers

I start to be persuaded to unbrand my and my wife's Desire. I am terrified of making a mistake though, so if any kind soul is reading this and has the time to point me to the right direction as to where do I download what and what do I do with it, well. I will be in their debt. thanks!

P.S: I do not want to root, just unbrand!
