Right, but you do not needmetal pins for wireless charging. Technology has came a long way...either way I don't even know if it is supported on the Note 2.

With the current implementation of wireless charging you do need pins. The pins will be on the inside of the rear battery cover and mate to pins on the inside of the phone. I guess the reason many people (including myself) thought the pins would be used for wireless charging is because NFC is usually part of the battery (like the Galaxy Nexus and S3). I just looked at my friend's S3. It has the same pins as the Note II, but the NFC antenna is in the battery. I checked the pins with a DMM. They don't measure the same as the battery, so the pins may or may not be connected to the battery (I don't know the setup for the charging circuitry). So I guess only time will tell.

Pins may be required on current Samsung models for wireless charging, but that doesn't mean that all wireless charging requires contacts to be touching. Either way it doesn't sound like this phone has it so it is pretty irrelevant. You can watch this video to see what the internals look like for good wireless charging without contacts (even though it was implemented on an iphone). iPhone 4s Wireless Charging Hack Demo and Tutorial - YouTube

The new Nokia line has wireless charging as well with no visible contacts...

I am a new member here and had a few questions for you. I was a iPhone user and had everyone until the huge disappointment with the 4s. I held onto the iPhone 4 until the GSM Galaxy Nexus appeared on the Play store. I picked that up and have been a supporter of Android ever since.

I really liked the GNex and was set on getting the LG Nexus but was pissed with no LTE.

I have the grandfathered unlimited plan and use my tethering a significant amount... maybe 1 gb per month.... The HSPA speeds have been annoying me so I wanted to find a few things out before I jump ship to the Note 2. I also travel to Europe frequently and have a VondaPhone Sim Card that I use.

1. Is there a app/mod/way to wifi tether without a root?
2. When they come out with 'roots' can you still retain all functionality of the the s-pen and it's software/apps?
3. How would I go about unlocking this phone so that I could use it in Europe and other GSM countries without getting an AT&T plan.

I really like the Note 2 and hope that there is an easy way to make it just like a Nexus with unlocked capability, wifi tethering, and the latest versions of Android.

Am I dreaming or can this all be accomplished?

Dumb question I'm sure but how do you turn of the annoying beeping noise it makes while charging w/o having to silence the whole phone?

Does anyone know if the Smart Dock shown on Samsung's U.S. website for $99.00 works with the international version GT-N7100 of the Galaxy Note 2?

And as a follow up, how do you turn off the stupid display while it's charging as well.

Ok so I figured it out. I was using my old micro USB charger from my Nexus 1 and it was causing the phone to beep and the screen to stay lit while plugged in. Switching to the charger that came w/ the phone fixed both problems.

1. I don't think you can tether without Root unless you are going to pay AT&T for the capability.

2. If you just root and not install a Rom, yes, you will retain the s-pen functionality. The problems begin when you start installing custom Roms and everything is dependent on which Rom you choose. Some may retain the s-pen features, some may not.

3. It's been a while since I dealt with AT&T, so forgive my ignorance, but can you just ask them for the unlock code? I vaguely remember that AT&T didn't give out unlock codes though, but that was a long time ago. If they don't, I'm sure someone will be able to figure out how to unlock it. Your other option is to buy an unlocked phone, but that would be at full retail price. And I am not sure about LTE capability.

to add what ren857 said...

1. there are some apps that let you do this without root. they do have some small restrictions. Root versions will give you a full hotspot wifi.

2. Rooting is not very hard on samsung devices. Rooting changes NOTHING. it only gives you access to make changes; that does not mean you have to change anything. and if you choose to use a custom ROM.. many developers add to without taking any standard features.
just read on the ROMs before you try them. Do a full "nandroid" backup before you change, and you can always jump back to EXACTLY the same environment/setup you had before.

3. if you get a version that has a sim slot.. you should be able to get it unlocked to use in other countries. if you explain to ATT what you want, they should be able to do this for you. if not there are services that will do it.

I'd like to know how to turn off the feature that makes my s-pen open apps and click links when it hovers over them HATE HATE HATE IT! Also is there any tricks to keep the charging cord from being removed so effortlessly. Thanks people!

If your charging port feels too loose, return the phone for an exchange.

So I've been playing around with this thing for a few days now...

1. Is there any way to turn off the sound in the stock camera? I'm not a fan of it storing to the device instead of SD card for burst options... But it seems the camera is a bit more crisp than the Fast Burst camera app I've been using.

2. Any way to get the Spen to work on the soft keys at the bottom? The fact that I have to keep stop using the pen and push the back button with my finger is making me not use the Spen at all.

1) I've been searching like a mad man and can't seem to find it, but there's an apk that was made at XDA that allows the stock camera to be made silent (if it's not available in the settings menu to shut off).

2) From what I understand, that's one of the biggest gripes about the S-pen and it won't work with the soft key buttons...but I could be wrong on that (still don't have either phone that I purchased, International or Sprint).

Thanks! I'm eventually going to root it and maybe the camera issue can be fixed easily then. Guess there isn't a way to fix that S Pen issue with root :( That is the stupidest thing ever. Didn't they have users test out the S Pen/Phone before they finalized on a design? Why wouldn't it work on the soft keys... It's illogical

Found it! Someone put it on their own dropbox account, but couldn't find the original thread that it started from. No root required.

I can't access dropbox from work, but after you download the apk, just "check" install apps from unknown sources (in your phone settings), install the app, open the app, "check" the radial square to enable the silencer, and hopefully it'll work. If it does work on the Note 2, it should work for both the rear and front facing camera.

It works great on my Photon, but not sure if there are system differences that'll prevent it from working universally.

Regarding S-pen...not sure if there's been a developer that made it work via ROOT. That was all the pre-root reviews that I had watched, saying it didn't work with the soft keys (and was awkward pushing the hard home button).

This link took me to XDA but when clicking for the apk I get this....

Thanks for trying to find it for me! Now that I know what it's called I'll try searching around this weekend when I have more spare time. Stupid thing called work puts a crimp into everything fun...

It'll be interesting to see if someone can fix the soft key issue... It is awkward to press and actual home button since I'm used to pressing a soft key. I'm hoping it'll get easier each day

LOL...No worries. Work has put a hault on my contributing to the forums the past couple days (going on vacation always does that to me).
