Verizon and at&t are blocking tether apps in the market. Not saying sprint will but you may want to grab a copy and back it up just in case

This is still pretty interesting, though. It seems like between caps and throttling they would not need to block these apps, but this is definitely the trend. I wonder how long it will take before Sprint gives into these types of activities. I know they pride themselves on "truly unlimited" everything, but it seems they can't hold out forever.

Exactly. The truly unlimited sprint plans will not last forever, and the claim ( I don't actually know if it's still true) that they are the cheapest provider will not last forever either.

At least, we can install these apps from out of market sources.

anyone know what mechanism they are using to block the apps? Is it:

1) you can't even find the apps when searching for it?
2) you aren't allowed to download it?
3) you aren't allowed to run the tethering app?
4) you can run it but the tethering doesn't work?

I believe it's 1 and/or 2. If that is the case, you can get the wifi tether outside of the market. If I'm wrong, well...that sucks.

Do we really need the app anyway? I mean the majority of ROMs have a built in way to tether I mean most have unlocked Sprint Hotspot and all AOSP ROMs have the built in hotspot feature.

I always lose mine lol, i clear out my back ups or something and dont have it backed up anymore. Market is the easiest way to get it...just sayin guys, damn :)

well yeah, we all know there are alternatives if you root. I assume this "block" only affects unrooted phones.... But how are they blocking it? Is it a special Market apk that is designed to not show stuff? That would imply Google is collaborating with the carriers to provide these one-off versions of the market app, which I really, really doubt. And what's to prevent someone from getting the app from the the market website via desktop?

Maybe there's some app running on the phone that watches for a particular apk name, and if you try to install it, it blocks it. Would have to be a system app, and you'd likely be able to find it if you looked at a list of processes running. lol if that's the case. And a good reason to root and delete it.

im bettin that sites like 4shared are always gonna have people upping those apk's to it... i guess warez is good for something after all lol

Carriers crack down on Android tethering apps, rain on our mobile hotspot parade -- Engadget

Here is the engadget link that talks a bit about this. It does not clarify 100% how they are being blocked, but it sounds like they are just being removed from the market from certain carriers. In the comments people seem to be saying that you can still just download the .apk and install it yourself.

o ho ho.... based on what I see in that article, Google is working with the carriers to block it. Look at the screenshot. The block is happening on the android market website before you even have a chance to buy/download the app. Ok that makes a lot more sense than having some stupid undercover process on your phone physically blocking a download.

That's messed up. I have always given google the benefit of the doubt, and I honestly believed that they were using my email contents to help me on some level, but this is just wrong.

Maybe it's time for google to step back a bit from android, completely open it up, and let the coders and programmers out there help improve it. I understand that a company would still likely need to be behind it, but perhaps their (google's) judgment is a bit cloudy.

I just switched over to evo from iphone because ATT bites. I had unlimited data plan, jailbroken phone with mywi. They didn't even HAVE a tethering option until this year. Then they started sending messages out to everyone using mywi that if they continued to tether without a plan they would be automaticly switched, get this, from unlimited data at $30 an month to 4g capped for $45 a month! They mean't it too. They can track tethering somehow. I ignored them until they let me know my plan was scheduled to be changed, then the next day I switched. Even with Sprints hotspot plan, my bill is a little cheaper than before.

You actually pay sprint for a hotspot? You are only the second person I have EVER seen that actually pays for hot spot...

its not as easy as jailbreaking but its totally more worthwhile...other than free app stuff...i mean it can always be done but we arent blocked from downloading from anywhere like Icrap is so root doesnt change anything there.

I"m paying now, until I learn a little about rooting.
If you plan to tether a lot, I would recommend paying for the hot spot.

I use wifi tether maybe once every 2 -3 months, in a pinch, when desperately needed, and no more than 5-10 minutes at a time. So I use rooted Evo to wifi tether.

If I tethered more often, I would pay for wifi hotspot. That's my ethical / moral stand on it.

though most wouldnt agree woth me....i squezze everything i can out of sprint....i am a long time customer...have crap for coverage in a mature market and feel i am paying for it....

on the att side...we did try and find wifi tether ...and really ANY tether app in the markwt and could not. loading it from the sd card of course worked just fine.
