what is your baseband(radio) and hboot? what methos and what step are you doing?
ok then something is not right. when you did taco root, did the output when you downgraded your misc partition match with the output shown in the guide? it needs to be exact.
steps 11 and 12 is where you use the commands that will downgrade the misc partition. in the guide there is a screen shot of what the commands should be and what the ouputs should be as well. it needs to be exact or the commands did not work and you will need to start over.
yeah if it worked then you should be able to use the PC36IMG file with no issues. so keep trying until you get the same output shown in the guide.
no htc sync is not needed for taco root initially. you will need it if you use unrevoked or revolutionary to get s-off.
then the taco root command did not work.
the whole idea is to use taco root command to gain a temporary root access so that you can downgrade the misc partition. this would then allow you to use any PC36IMG rom file to downgrade to an earlier OTA so that you can use either unrevoked or revolutionary to gain s-off.
so you will need to run taco root again.

so do you have s-off? if so then you can just wipe and flash the rom. please read the second post of the guide for more details about flashing.

yep you have no need for the PC36IMG file now.
now read the 2nd post for proper flashing instructions and go and get your flash on
If you now have s-off, why are you running Unrevoked again? Or perhaps I am misunderstanding you 
so you do not have s-off then? not sure why you are running unrevoked again if you do like mikey has asked.
if you do not have s-off then there are a couple of things this could be:
1. do you have the drivers installed correctly? you need the hboot driver that is found in the unrevoked wki
2.you need to install htc sync and then uninstall it leaving the drivers on the pc
3.make sure that there is no antivirus running on the pc
4.make sure that there is no sync type program running like double twist or pda net that could cause communication errors.
5.make sure that you have the phone set as charge only
6.usb debugging is also turned on.

What recovery do you have? I forgot if unrevoked puts a custom recovery on the phone or not?
