Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I haven't touched my DINC for nearly two years so things have changed a lot in the custom ROM world. And it's significantly more confusing since the directions are all for the Evo.

I've got hboot 2.15 and "successfully" flashed the Amon RA recovery through adb, but when I select "recovery" it just goes to the HTC Incredible splash page and hangs. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Hello and welcome to AF!!
This is the Evo4g forums and the files here are for the Evo 4g.
Be very careful what you flash/install on your device because roms/kernels/files etc made for one device may not/will not work on other devices:)

Here is the link to the Droid Incredible forums:

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!

and to piggyback what mikey has said, amon ra 2.3(at least the one in this guide) is made specifically for the evo 4g phone. it will not work on other phones.

in the root forum for the incredible there is a root guide sticky that has all of the links and info you need to get your phone rooted.

Hello! Thank you for posting this guide :)
I'm new to this whole rooting business, so I was wondering if the MikG rom is still your best recommendation (I noticed that the last update was in October of last year).

Cheers,
Con

yep still is my recommendation as far as sense roms go. for aosp roms decks reloaded is also a really good rom.

for moe suggestions you can go here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html

and try the staff's pick for more suggestions.

and one of the reasons why mikg has not been updated is that it is perfect in every way....there is no need for an update.....lol

edit::eviltongue: to you mikestoney

Sorry Constructive, I have to do this..slight derailment here:

Did I really do it? Is this a once in a lifetime occurrence? Can I say it?
Yes, I will say it.
NINJA'D THE ROBOT!!

Actually... I'm back already xD
I'm still on step 3 of the -recommended- method for rooting.

I downloaded the "Rom Manager" app to set up a recovery file, but it says it can't find the "Superuser" ...
Did I miss a step somewhere?
I don't remember ever downloading that.

where did you get to use rom manager? its not in this guide. DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER FOR ANYTHING!!!! use the methods found in the guide to get recovery.

Err.. Well, I was unclear on how to do these step:
"3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup"

So I googled...
Android ROM and rooting dictionary for beginners | TalkAndroid.com

to go to recovery power the phone off (make sure that you have fastboot unchecked, settings/power/uncheck fastboot) then in the bootloader select recovery. and how to make nandroid backups is listed in the guide under nandroid backup.

basically in amon ra select backup and restore. keep the first three checked and i would make one nandroid backup with wimax. wimax is your 4g. there is a small possibility of loosing 4g while flashing things....mainly radios. after the first nandroid backup i would keep that one safe on your pc just in case and after that you do not need to keep backing wimax.

i would unistall rom manager....it is a worthless app as you should do most things in recovery.

now do you have recovery?

I uninstalled it already, lol.
And I don't have 4g anyway, so I'm fine with that. This device no longer has service :)
I'll update in a bit. Thank you.

Edit: "Performing backup"

Cheers! ^^

Edit2: *Bloop* "Backup complete!"

Hurrah, hurrah!

I'm sure this will make me sound even newbier than before, but... which file is the 'rom' file that I'm supposed to select?
I couldn't find the superwipe file either, lol...

I see the folders (from the zip files) that I moved onto my SD card though. They are:
data, Meta-inf, and system.

Ah, that's probably my problem :P
And... back a few steps I go! xD

...
Edit: This is so exciting :D
Edit2: First boot that takes longer than usual... is pretty awesome xD
Luckily, I'm not prone to seizures o-o

SUCCESS!
Thank you guys so much ^^
Now for... "life after rooting" hehe.
