Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I have been trying to root my HTC Evo 4g but my issue is for whatever reason in the bootloader or fastboot related screens my volume and power buttons will not respond what so ever. So even when I have tried the htcdev I can select yes and contuine and when I have tried the taco root method I can't really get into recovery. I have tried using ADB to get into recovery and once the red triangle pops up when I press and hold the volume buttons and power to get the stock recovery menu it simply reboots the phone.

The volume up button doesn't work at all however the volume down and power does. I haven't been able to complete the htcdev route because when it ask me to to select yes and confirm to unlock bootloader none of the buttons will respond.

Odd that the volume down and power work except when in bootloader:confused:
I am stumped at the moment. Let me poke at my brain some more about this.:)

the only thing that maybe work is to try taco root since it is done with mostly commands on the pc. you did mention you tried to do the vol up and down + the power button and it just rebooted, correct? do you have fastboot unchecked in the phone settings?

if the answer is yes then this is a hardware issue and anything that i can think of will not work, unless you get the button issue fixed.

I have been trying taco root and when I use the --setup option i get "rm failed for data/data/recovery/log, Permission denied link failed File exists."
and when i try the root step I get "rebooting into root. /data/local/tacoroot.sh: cannot create /data/local/.prop: permission denied

yeah you need to get into the stock recovery(power+vol up and vol down) first in order for taco root to work.

OK, Im trying to do the HTC Dev method and I got unlocked ok and I flashed the Amon Ra ok but the superuser file says its bad and cant be installed. Advice please?

This is the exact message I get:

E: Cant open /sdcard/Superuser-3.07-efghi-signed.zip
(bad)
Installation Aborted

Welcome carguyjohn!
Try a fresh download. Delete the one on your sd card now, redownload, and flash.:)
If that still doesn't work, I can dig up another file for ya:)

Thanks Mike. I tried redownloading it and that didnt work. Now Im trying to flash the MikG Rom as a work around. Will that work?

What error are you getting?

Both for gmail and for the play store, when I input my user name and password it says theyre invalid. But they arent. They work on the computer fine and Ive done it over and over I know Im not mis typing them.

The exact words of the error is: Authentication failed

hmmmmm.....try a couple things.
First boot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache, reboot, then try it again.
If that's a no go, then go into manage applications/all, find the playstore and gmail and clear data and cache, then try to sign in.
If that still doesn't work, boot back into recovery, wipe everything 3 times (EXCEPT THE SD CARD) and reflash the rom.

Edit:just saw your edit...you use 2 step verification eh? So do I :D

LOL, yeah thats my fault. I went to a two step verification like a year ago at Googles suggestion after someone tried to hack my account and it slipped my mind.

Don't feel bad, I do the same thing too. Flash a new rom while out and about without access to a computer and can't sign into google without an application specific password.

As we speak, I am flashing Decks Reloaded again to my Evo:D

did you finally get off that couch?:D:D:D you are actually flashing something?

@carguyjohn350 not sure what the issue was with su. but you will find that mikg as well as other roms are waaaaaaay better then stock anyways.....LOL

Hello everyone! It seems that I'm back!
I haven't done much since using this guide to root my phone, but today, I connected it to my computer (as disk drive) to move some stuff around.
Upon attempting to disconnect my phone, I noticed that I wasn't getting the usual "login" screen on my phone. Instead, it just displayed my background and the notification bar.
Restarting, wiping cache and Dalvik cache did nothing.
I don't want to get too hasty with reflashing, so.. here I am :)

Any clues for what I can do?

Edit: And no, I can't pull the notification bar down...
And my computer isn't recognizing my phone right now either, since it's probably set back to charge only with debugging off.

what rom are you on now?

do you have HTC sync insatlled? if so try and uninstall and reinstall it and see if that helps. also try and reboot your pc.

I remember that happening to me too. Trying to remember what I did to fix that.:p
It was either boot into recovery, and fix permissions, then reboot.
Or dirty flash the rom, meaning, no wiping, just reflash:D
