Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

While waiting I tried the PC36IMG method and IT WORKED!!!!!! I did the nandroid backup and I am now copying everything to a backup folder in my PC before I do the superuser flash

Now, after I flash su, am I FULLY rooted? what's this unrevoked root I read about everywhere?

When you say:

2.go into recovery (power off, make sure fastboot is unabled, and then press and hold power+vol down), do you mean fastboot ENABLED or DISABLED?

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pretty much yes. but i would try mikg3.11. it is waaaaay better then stock. so no need to flash the su file as it is cooked into the rom. but that is up to you.

unrevoked was the old way of rooting the phone. but that exploit has long been closed up. you can always use the captain's method to change the misc partition and downgrade your hboot and radio so that you can fully root the phone with unrevoked. more complicated but up to you.

Thank you. Just installed su thinking I would gain access to manipulating files in the system>app folder so I can get my MMS working, but it says I have NO permission. AM I missing something?

All I want is to get all the stuff for metro working and I thought as a superuser I would be able to.

well that is for the evo 3d so i'm not sure if that will work for the evo 4g or not. i would use the one i linked.

Ok, but we are veering away from my point. I thought that the whole idea of rooting was so you can gain control of your phone which mean being able to manipulate files and such..... Am I getting this wrong? and if so, how do I gain control of my phone so I can manipulate the files within. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure what file you used, but have you installed both su binaries and the su apk?
If you installed the binaries but not the apk, you can get the Super user apk by ChainDD in the play store

to piggyback on what robob1221 said. you will also need to use the right file manager to gain access to the system partition. i like es file manager or even better root explorer. also in both you have to set the permission from read only to r/w as well.

ROBOBOB IS IN DA HOUSE!! I'm in a good mood, sorry.
Slightly off topic and you may p.m. me but, about superuser.
The flashable zip in the guide vs. the apk....why need both?
why not just the .zip?
I have both superuser and super-superuser. If I update super-superuser binarys, then that is the one that grants permissions.
If I update regular superuser binarys, then that one takes over.
I guess I need clarification.
Maybe I should start a thread.:D

I only use the old superuser, so I'm not too savvy when it comes to SuperSU. The only thing I know about SuperSU is that it plays nicer with Android 4.x roms. Details....

I would say use one not both. A lot people recommend the newer SuperSU.

i use any of the su apk's that are built into the custom rom of my choice. i have not seen super su built into any rom i have flashed.

I thought the ics roms used it? I don't flash too many sprint roms... Don't work all that well network wise over here

well i'm on the evo3d now. i have as of yet try any of the ics roms out now(tried a few beta's before) so.... as of now no super su yet. its no biggy as long as my apps can get su permission i'm good.

that will not work. you have to flash a script found here to get mms working: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-evo-all-info-here-rom-metrogenmod-7-1-a.html

Just went there and don't know exactly which one to use to get Picture MMS and 3g working right. Everything is very confusing on that thread. It references other threads which is where I downloaded MetroDroid V4.0 which got rid of all the Sprint stuff, but now I can't even send a regular txt message which I could before the flash. Can you give me some direction on this? This is the WHOLE reason I rooted my phone. Thanks in advance

Just a thought ...what about using Gosms Pro? See if you can send mms with that.
I assume you are currently trying to use the stock text app?

I tried with Handcent sms, but it is NOT a matter of the app, I think it has to do with the MetroDroid flash that I did (regular txt mms stopped working right after the flash). Is there a way to undo that? Like I said I just want the Picture mms to work, as well as the 3g speed, that's all, nothing fancy. Thanks

hmmmm, not really familiar with the whole MetroDroid flash thing, but I seem to recall someone else having this type of issue.....if I could only remember where I saw it!:)
I tried searching on this site and sidenote, the search is kinda sucky, it changed from what it used to be. So I searched on xda and alot of results came up. Did you, I'm sure you did, try searching?
If I can find something, I will link it for you:D

Thanks, I DID look in xda and read just about everything I could find on Metro related stuff, but everything is very confusing for a basic user like me (even though I was able to root the phone and such and was able to program Chevy Crazy • Home <don't know how to promoted, though>)

I just wanna send a picture and have 3g, that's all

Just throwing this out there, have you tried wiping cache and dalvik cache in recovery?
I kinda read back thru these posts and assumed you are rooted, unlocked bootloader, s-on with Amon Ra recovery?
Are you still on the stock rom or another rom?

Another thing, and again, just throwing this out there, go to manage apps/all, scroll down to the stock messaging apk and clear data and cache, if any.

I was on the stock rom, but today I flashed MetroDroid V4.0. How do you wipe the cache and dalvik cache? please, be specific. And what will I accomplish by doing this? Thanks again

You wipe cache and dalvik cache in recovery.
Power down phone, wait a few seconds, then while holding volume down, press power....this will bring you to your bootloader screen. From there, you can select recovery.
Now, in Amon ra, select the wipe option. Another screen will come up with different wipe options. You only want to select cache first, and use the power button to select and the volume up/down buttons to navigate to that option. Push power to select and I believe it will ask you if you want to wipe cache. Push power again to confirm....then do the same thing with dalvik cache.
When done go back and select reboot.
Wiping cache and dalvik cache helps when things go a little wonky.:D

I just did and at least it gave me access to the app which I did NOT have before the clear. I can now send messages, but cannot receive them. Thanks
