Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

new guy here. been studying up on the whole root process for a couple days and have finally felt somewhat confident enough to try. I havent made it past the bootload unlocker. i get to the part where i have to copy and paste the code, you know that code <<<<inbetween these things>>>> anyways, im not sure if im copying and pasting correctly? and i also dont understand where im suppose to paste it. any help would be greatly appreciated. also i am not the most tech savy person so if you explain something pretend you are explaining it to a third grader. hope people are still reading this thread :]
Welcome here to AF!
right click on the text body and select mark....it will auto copy....then paste it into the big box near the bottom....:D

Edit: of course we are still reading this thread! lol

ok cool i did the copy and paste correctly. but im still doing something wrong. it says something about internal or external device not recognized

I paste it at the bottom of the box that the<<<<code>>>> they give me is in. is that right? It says "is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" a bunch of times.

o.k...are you copying the identifier token text from the beginning to end?
I believe it tells you what to copy...
Try to copy it again.
go to your token....right click and click mark....place cursor at the location they tell you so that it is all highlighted then right click.
As soon as you right click, the highlighted text will go back to normal...you copied it successfully....then paste it into the big box right above the "submit" button

Edit: your high lighted text should look like this before you right click to copy

Then paste it herein the box that says, enter token

i dont see a submit button anywhere. i am not really using the htcdev site. what i am doing is manually opening a comand prompt by shift+right click on the andriod folder i created containing the three files

See this guide...
Read it before you go any further.

Did not know you were not at the HTc dev site.
Do you know what your bootloader screen says now?
Need to know your bootloader version etc and anything else on that screen.

that is the exact guide im am using :). i found it at the very beginning of this thread. i am using the htc dev method but i am following the steps listed in that post rather than the htcdev page steps. and my hboot screen is locked s-on hboot version 2.18. and fastboot usb is highlighted in red.

ok so once you paste the token from the command prompt you need to go back to the HTCdev site and at the end of the pge where it says "my device identifier token" with in that box paste the command token there.

you will need to extract the file and then move the recovery.img file to tha android folder you created earlier. then from there go to the android folder and then enter the fastboot command.

this might be a dumb question, but how do i extract it? there is no option for that when i right click. and it automatically tries to open it with adobe reader no matter how many times i download it

well you can do it in recovery. in amon ra2.3 there is a usb-ms toggle that you can do when the phone is hooked up to the pc via usb cable. you can move the wipe and the rom file over to the card. and go from there.
