Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I am trying to unlock my evo 4g 2.3.5, 2.18. but when we plug the phone into the pc with the bootloader screen open, it never reads "fast boot USB" it only stays at "fast boot." is it the phone or the computer? how do I get the 'USB' portion to come up?

on the screen is the bootloader menu. you need to select fastboot to get it to switch to fastboot usb.

So in the boot loader menu, I select fast boot and then "hboot" turns into "fast boot (with a red background)," but what I want it to say is "fast boot usb." is my PC missing something? does it need some sort of update (other than the java)?

thanks for getting me into the right room!

no worries. for one thing do you have the android folder setup? do you have the proper files in it? also do you have the phone hooked up to the pc?

Just wanted to drop in and say THANKS! Followed your guide and it was a breeze. The only bump I ran into is my work blocks one of the sites you were linking to for downloads.

Well, and I thought I had to unzip the ROM to put it on the SD but someone here helped with than.

I used the MikG 3.11 ROM you suggested and like it. was going to download a new theme today but my dang work blocks that site too. Grrr. Guess I gotta do it on my own time.

You should be working anyways...lol
(I should talk, I'm at work now--:p)
But glad it worked out for ya!

I got all the right files and I have the phone hooked up to the pc, but its just not registering the phone as connected.

I tried hooking it up to another PC and still wasn't able to get the phone hooked up, however, when hooking it up to a MAC it switched to "bootloader usb"... but there are no instructions for a MAC, its all pc.

any recommendations?

do you have the latest htc sync installed?

ok so i added a statement to the taco root method at step 12. this is where you enter the taco root command and makes your phone unstable. this is normal and your phone might even bootloop at this point. just keep going.

sorry i should have been more clear on this earlier.

Hello community,

first time for me, trying to root my Desire HD. Tried with HTCdev method and everything seems to be ok, but when I get to step 3 "flash the su file.." and I try to start the recovery, my phone hangs with the HTC Screen.
With step 2 "how to get recovery" everything seems to be ok (4x OK within the flasher.log) with the "AndroidFlasher" method.

Bootscreen:
*** UNLOCKED ***
ACE PUT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0029
MICROP-438
RADIO-26.14.04.28_M
eMMC-boot

Any hint would be very nice!

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
be very careful. this guide was meant for the htc evo 4g. the HTCdev site and the su file should work fine. but the recovery is specific to the og evo. you need to post this in the Desire HD - All Things Root - Android Forums for help with rooting your phone. here is the root guide as well: http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/489044-desire-hd-all-things-root-guide.html

good luck.

Personally I wouldn't worry about unrooting especially with a cracked screen. Not worth the hassle. Sprint's policy is more "root friendly " now:)

after i have completed all the rooting steps successfully how do i get my wifi hotspot to work?
I would flash a rooted rom such as MikG that has the hacked hotspot.
Should be a link in the guide somewhere...perhaps in the section "flash su or custom rom" or something like that....there should be a link there.
:D

NICE!!!!!!!!! now like mikey said mikg3.11 is waaaaay better then stock and it has the hacked sprint hotspot. however, it will not work on 4g. something about how it was hacked will not allow 4g to work. if you have to have 4g then you get the wireless tether apk from here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...net-tethering-w-evo-4g-3g-wireless-wired.html. there is a link to all of the wireless tether apk's. some versions work better then others.

Alright I've got my unlocked, s-on phone with AmonRa recovery. I followed a guide that wasnt exactly like this but it was very similar. When i went in to the recovery, i tried to flash a superuser app. When i clicked on the zip file in the recovery, it wouldnt flash. Instead, it went to the next directory. Said /META-INF and /apps, so i clicked apps and the superuser.apk wasnt there. It shows up in my computer though. Instead, i booted up the phone and went to the market, and installed the app superuser. Am i rooted? Can i install Cyanogen 7.2 without worries? I also want google apps so im afraid that it wont show up in the recovery. Please help.

sounds like you unzipped the su file. leave it zipped and flash it in recovery. the su app will not work unless you flash the su file first.

Welcome to the forums!:)
Sounds like you may have unzipped the su file and tried to flash it?
Nevertheless, you still have Amon recovery and are still on the stock rom?
If you want to flash a different rom, it will include the superuser.
Just remember to make a nandroid backup....
In the begining of this guide, it will show you how to do that.
Again, nandroid backup first....in case something goes wonky:p

Edit: AHA!! Ninja'd by ocn the great!!
