Root [ROM][AOSP]dGB v01_28_2012| 2.3.5| 375MB /data| 60MB /system |Mult-lang |Unlock |Reboot[28 Jan]

hi.
stick with it. dGB is worth it honest :-)
ring tone wise I find using ringdroid app works well for me.
it will use any mp3 track on your phone and set as a ringtone

good luck
dan

Thanks Dan - will try Ringdroid.

Still looking for answers to the other questions (fuzzy wallpaper, getting the old notification sound for texts, haptic feedback not working, installing fonts.)

New questions:
1. I've downloaded the Clicker_Hi.apk from the Ultimate Toolbox thread but can't fathom how to change from the "standard" keyboard.
2. Is it just me or does the brightness have a mind of its own? I have it set on auto and despite the light in here being constant the phone is changing constantly.

autobrightness doesnt have a mind of its own but it can be a bit "off"
this is the case for nearly all aosp roms ive experienced (thats all of them so far)
as for your issues with the wall paper. use quickpick to chose the picture and then maximise the crop size and it should be ok. did you download this picture over 3g or wifi or was it on the sdcard before? reason i ask is if you have freshly download it over the mobile network its probably been compressed and its not actually the phone

haptic feedback works, where are you not seeing it working?

Haptic feedback isn't working in messaging for certain - haven't tried e.g. Gmail. It also isn't working when typing into the search field in the Market, so I presume it isn't working anywhere. And yes, the option is turned on.

Wallpaper: The wallpaper is a digital camera photo which was on my SD card - the same photo I used until this morning when I was still running Sense. I've maximised the crop to fill the height of the picture and as much of the width as I can but it still looks blurry, whereas it was pin-sharp before.

Keyboard: Still stuck on the one the ROM comes with, which isn't ideal. I've downloaded the one from the toolbox (Clicker.apk or something like that?) but can't see how to change it.

when you say haptic feedback are you refering to vibration when a message is received? this is not haptic feedback. this is notification and is controlled seperately in the messaging in app for 2.3.5
go into messages>settings>notification settings>vibration and select "always"
if however you are on about the keypresses, this is kb specific and you need to enable it.
on default android kb open up the keyboard in messaging and tap the settings button, enable "vibrate on keypress"

you have to do a few things to change kb's
1st you will need to go to "language and keyboard" and enable the keyboard
after that you need to open an app that has a txt space. hold down on that space and it should say "input method" select the keyboard of choice.

the wall paper, did you use quickpic to do it? dont use the default android method one its rubbish at resizing

OK - haptic feedback is now working (had to enable it in the "Android Keyboard" settings plus in the HTC_IME mod settings).

Still got problem with custom ringtone, notification sounds, fuzzy wallpaper image...

Haptic feedback as in the phone vibrating when you press any key (e.g. each keypress when texting.)

Wallpaper: By "quickpick" you mean... what? I've done it by pressing Menu - Wallpaper - Gallery (or Astro - I've installed them both) and it comes out fuzzy. I've also opened an image in the Gallery and told it to set it as my wallpaper - same result.

Next question: Any suggestions for a decent clock to replace the Sense one which is obviously no longer there? I've tried "Sense Analog Clock" in the Market and don't like it. Also tried "Desk Clock" from the folder on the dGB site, and the Analog Clock widget/

Next question: Now how about a calendar?

hi,

keyboard -i alywas use Smart keyboard Pro - it rocks - dont bother with stock stuff imo
screen - for me no issues at all - might need a full wipe and re-install? or try different images maybe

notification sounds should be sorted same way as ringtones i think

Had a look at Smart Keyboard Pro and don't like the look of it (plus you have to pay.) Anyway, I've got the keyboard working now, including the dictionary and haptic stuff.

Screen - still fuzzy. If I have to do a full wipe & reinstall (again) I'm just going to reinstall the developer build of GB from HTC. The issue is that the image looked fine under Sense, but on this it looks fuzzy. Same image + different ROM fuzzy image = not a problem with the image.

Notification sounds: I've found a zip file on XDA with the old sounds in it so I now have my chosen sound back, hurrah. Still no ringtone though. I've copied the file into the Notifications directory and it doesn't come up as an option when changing tones.

Get the feeling I'm going to be back on Sense by the end of the day. As good as this ROM looks it seems to require a hell of a lot of fannying around just to get it the way I want it. A huge shame.

well if you want sense you should use sense. people who use this rom generally like the custom stuff and dont like sense really so we dont mind going through apps etc as we would have had to do this with sense anyway as we dont like sense :P

for ringtones you need to create a folder on your sdcard called ringtones and place the ones you want in there. (this is android, its not rom specific)

when i use quickpic (a gallery app) to add wallpapers i dont get fuzziness. this could however be because of the res of the picture.
there are wallpaper apps about which will probably do a better job like "wallpaper set and save"
Its not your picture that is a problem, the default android cropping system is a bit shit and recompresses the image badly. its best to use an app to set it like WSS or resize it on a computer before putting it on the phone.

I understand your frustration with a rom like this if you come from sense with the expectation that its all there for you.
This rom is advertised as vanilla though and everything is pretty much exactly as android is before people like htc modify it to hell.
This means for people who like making the phone their own its in the best conditions. where as if you did the same on sense it would slow the phone down.

good luck though and its good you tried it anyway, its not for everyone

Did I say I wanted Sense? I don't remember saying that. I was just asking how to get things working, and for suggestions of some apps / widgets that would replace some of those that came with Sense (just the clock and the calendar.)

For info I've now got the ringtone working (no apps required) and I'm now just struggling to get the wallpaper to look less fuzzy. As I said - and as people seem to be ignoring - it looked fine this morning before I installed this ROM, and now, after wiping the phone, installing the ROM, the kernel, and the hboot, it is fuzzier. Say what you want, but to me it's not the image that is at fault here, as the image hasn't changed, has it?

I worked out that "Quickpic" is an application from the Market. You seemed to assume I knew that, which I didn't.

lose your attitude mate were trying to help

fresh android takes a lot of configuring, this rom is advertised as a fresh rom with nothing on it so complaining about going back to sense is a bit odd. people who dont like sense dont have an issue with that as we have to go through this process anyway even on sense just to get away from sense

did you read what i had said. I know its not your image, its to do with stock android (known issue) and hense why i mentioned alternative methods.
where have i once ignored anything you are saying

I realised that and thats why i mentioned in my last post that its an app from the market as i guessed you didnt realise and I didnt clarify that in my post.

seriously though. i wont bother helping any further with people like you as i have given an answer for everything you mentioned and you reply like that..

i even gave step by steps on how to sort the keyboards etc :/

have a nice day

OK. Apologies if I came across as having an attitude. I really haven't. I know that this ROM is pretty "bare bones" and that is part of the appeal - I wanted to see Android as Android, not Android as Sense, but I was genuinely stumped by why so many things weren't working and didn't seem to be getting anywhere when I asked for help.

Keyboard: Yes you told me that I had to go to an app where text is entered (e.g. messaging) and long-press in the text box and set the keyboard there. That was all I needed to know in the end (aside from that haptic feedback had to be set in two or three different sets of settings, not just one) - not that I could install other keyboard apps from the market. Looking on the toolbox thread it mentioned three different files for keyboards, so I downloaded the first one but it turned out that I needed that one and one of the other two below it, one being black & white, the other blue & black. This wasn't clear, and I worked this out for myself through trial & error.

Wallpaper fuzziness: You've just admitted that Android renders images fuzzily, so an app is needed to render them clearly. Again I didn't know this. I'd installed "Gallery 3D" from the APKs folder on the dGB site and tried setting the wallpaper through this and also through Astro File Manager, and both were fuzzy. Then you mentioned "Quickpic", which I thought was the menu key shortcut to set wallpaper from the homescreen, but then a Google search told me it was an app, which I installed but when I opened my image and set it as a wallpaper I was asked if I wanted to set it as my wallpaper or as my Quickpic Wallpaper. Was there a difference? Trial & error led me to the answer.

Notification sounds and ringtones: Again I was pointed in the direction of an app at first, but Google and trial & error brought me the answers I needed.

I'm still trying to work out how to install the font pack into the System folder I can't find (any suggestions?) because I've bought the Beautiful Widgets app from the Market (10p today) for a suitable clock, and the fonts look awful, so I'm guessing I need these extra fonts.

All in all I like the ROM, and I'm grateful for the help I've been given, but the problem has been one of assumption. It seems to be assumed that everyone here is at the same level, that everyone has installed ROMs before, and for some of us doing what I've done today is a big step, one I've been considering for several weeks now, and when I asked for help I didn't really get it. Ultimately my "I get the feeling I'll be back on Sense by the end of the day" wasn't a case of "I miss Sense - what have I done?" but more of an "I've tried this, and it isn't working for me, and I'm not getting the answers I need, so I may as well." At the moment though this ROM seems to be working for me, and I've just got the fonts issue to resolve, so once that is sorted it should all be good.

i gave you step by steps, its unforutunate for me that you found the answer before i told you you need to create folders on the sdcard for notifications and ringtones.
I can talk from only my personal experience. i use quickpic, if that doesnt work then you will need to use wallpaper set and save. I didnt admit, if you read my first post i mention from the start that its an issue with androids cropping.
I dont use htc kb, i just know how to change the keyboards etc when you need to.
I mentioned step by step instructions for haptic feedback on keyboard, menus and messaging notification so i struggle to see where anything i have mentioned is presumption other than saying "use quickpic" and thats why i reclarified it on a later post
i even asked on my first mention about your image where it was sourced from so i could give better advice.

its not an issue of assumption. we have to ask questions in order to understand exactly what you need.

EDIT:
fonts are not my thing, ive never messed with them personally so i cant advise
if you have changed your hboot what is it? if its the 60 hboot you might need to update that to 65hboot to fit the fonts

this rom rocks! no question.....but if you like sense or stock then maybe
not for you. a lot of this stuff is down to taste and how you use your
phone imo

/system is under the root folder. Most file managers don't go off the sdcard, you'll need one that allows access to the ROM folders, not just the sdcard. Root Explorer is the most popular one, but it's not the only one.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the fonts unless you have an issue or really want a particular one.

Re-the wallpaper, it's best to remember it's not just the image, but how Android decides to fit it to the screen. Sense may use a better method. If you use an image application (like Quickpic - which IMHO is a lot better than Gallery3D*) then you can actually crop the image to about the right size so Android needs to mess with it less.

* I don't like Gallery 3D and find it buggy. One of the first things about this ROM that I liked as the fact that it was not included.

i just downloaded beautiful widgets
the fonts are based on the skins used not the system fonts. when i changed the skins so did the font as they seem to be encapsulated into the program

I am using Quickpic now. Your comment just then: "You will need to use wallpaper set and save" - meaning what? As for the "admit" thing, okay, treat it as "said", but my point was that the image wasn't fuzzy on the old image but was on this one, so the problem clearly wasn't the image. Yes I now know that Android isn't great with images, but I didn't back then, and it's academic now as I'm using Quickpic and it is fine.

I dont use htc kb, i just know how to change the keyboards etc when you need to.

Once again, I didn't know how to change the keyboard, or which of the three files to install. I worked it out for myself, but thanks for telling me how to set it within an app, which was the major thing I was stuck with.

It's not necessarily just you presuming things, Rastaman. I work as an IT trainer and I understand that giving clear instructions is vital: I wouldn't say to someone on one of my courses "OK - now configure your server" - I'd tell them exactly what was required, how to set it, where to set it, I'd show it myself, and then, once everyone was happy, I'd let them do it. Some of the instructions on this thread and on the dGB site haven't been clear, such as vague things like install a keyboard, "drop the fonts into [folder]" and so on. I wanted help and whilst some was given, it appeared that much was assumed. But please understand, this is not "attitude", or "having a go" - I'd just like to see a little more guidance, and some clearer instructions. I'd like it to be easier for everyone.

EDIT:
fonts are not my thing, ive never messed with them personally so i cant advise

That's fine. I was asking as the dGB site made it seem that you had to drop some fonts into a particular location - like it was essential. Again, how about adding the word "optional" next to the step, or adding some instructions on how to approach this (e.g. use these instructions [link], or use this app [link])?

if you have changed your hboot what is it? if its the 60 hboot you might need to update that to 65hboot to fit the fonts

I changed to the 65. Again, the site and notes made it seem that changing the hboot was essential, so I did it.

For info you can change the font within the widgets. I used the default skin for the home weather and clock and it didn't appear as the thumbnail displays. By default it uses the standard Android font (the one you see on the lockscreen clock) so I found where this can be changed, which is buried within the widget display settings.

ahh i didnt have those options as i was testing with superclock not home so i could only change it with skins
eitherway we now know for definate that you dont have to flash a load of fonts

UI link fixed.

As the installation section on the site says, hboot is to take full advantage of this Rom.

The extras section are extras, not essentials.

This Rom used to say it was for advanced users only but I removed it when I stopped insisting on custom mtds. However it still is. Dgb is not an aosp show case. It's designed for aosp users who know what they want so perhaps I can reflect that in the first post / site. This is kind of why there are no step by step guides.

If someone wants to write the faq for post 3, please do. I just don't have the time right now. I spent months perfecting this Rom and parts of my life suffered for it.
