Why are you nandroiding at all? We only do that to back up the ext partition. Its simply copy from old sd and copy back to new one.

Well in that case, that's even easier now. I thought you had to nandroid whenever you swapped cards. Didn't realise it was just for ext3.

Thanks Dan

Mounts and storage > Format system
Mounts and storage > Format cache
Mounts and storage > Format data

Ok, I did as you asked. Tried to reflash both versions of the ROM formatting system, cache & Data in between & each time when I reboot the phone gets as far as the black screen with the steel android animation which just loops endlessly (I gave it 15 minutes). I can see the animation restarting every 20 seconds or so.

So I formatted system, cache & data again & tried to restore both of the nandroids that I have on my sd in turn while formatting system, cache & data in between. When I do this all I get is the white htc screen again. I gave this 20 minutes but it progressed no further.

To further complicated matters I have only just changed my sd card having copied the contents across & cant remember if I flashed from this card or the old one yesterday morning. The nandroid worked this morning from this card but not now.

I am away from home in Germany with work at the moment so have limited access to hotel computers & the old sd is at home. Is there anything else I could try?

Thanks!

it shouldnt matter if its not giving an md5 error then the zip is intact and it should be fine.
try install from zip without restoring after formatting system again and see if its ok.
if that has a problem still then your device maybe overheating or something

what is the pvt version?

this might be total rubbish, but when I installed the update I had to re-do the custom MTD...could that be the problem?

It is PVT1. These are the ones prone to overheating aren't they?

What is a boot patch?

I've noticed that when I do a restore recovery scrolls through all the files it's restoring. I'm sure it did the same when I installed the update. Now when I flash the update zip file it just says:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update package...
Update complete

All within a few seconds. No scrolling through files. Is this normal?

Boot patch is for custom mtd users. Are you using custom mtd?

Or are you using hboot?

Which one?

Only restores go through files. Rom flash is as you described

are you using a customMTD layout rather than a custom hboot?

I'm using Suroot's custom 65mb hboot.

I had a problem when I first moved to dGB a couple of months ago. It wouldn't go past the white htc screen so I flashed an oxygen hboot from alpharev. It booted ok on that & I was able to flash the 65mb hboot afterwards. Not sure if that is related to my current problem or not.

Should I try flashing another hboot when I get home at the end of the week?

Should I format boot from recovery?

I don't want do anything that might make it worse so I'll await your advice.

By the way I see Dan is helping someone on another thread who has a problem with very little internal data after flashing a ROM. That is how my problem started so I'll be interested to see how that is resolved. a RUU was suggested.

I'm very grateful for the help - I don't want to have to dig out that old Nokia from my bottom drawer!!!

Obviously can't return it under warranty in the current state.

Would a repair shop be able to do anything with it? I'm guessing replacing a number of internal parts. Probably not worth it for the price but buying a new phone is kind of expensive too. I'm not on contract, bought the phone outright & have an old O2 simplicity deal with unlimited data & free sms when abroad which is handy as I travel a lot with work.

It doesnt need hardware doing at this stage. Thats a last resort. Returning to stock would be preferable to that. Flashing a stock hboot and a combination of other roms would be preferable to an RUU.... Its just what to try before that. But maybe that is the next logical step

I will be home this evening so I will try flashing a stock hboot & an RUU unless you can come up with any pther suggestions in the meantime. which RUU should I go for? my phone was an unbranded unlocked desire with 2.1 when I got it updated OTA to 2.2
