After doing my 75 hour off power battery test on TG 0.8 + TheOC I wanted to try out Whyzor's work.
Alternate Launchers
The 1/7 version of this ROM was an interesting diversion for me, since I hadn't looked at any other Android Launchers. After a lot of playing with things I was able to get the
ADW Launcher (shipped with Reloaded) to a setup that I like. My favorite feature is the ability to control the bottom shelf apps (persistent across all screens). It was also nice to remove the extra home screens I do not use. There are a lot of interesting themes, but without complete icon support (for all the apps I use) most themes are not capable of reaching their full affect.
Once getting ADW working I decided to take a look at
GO Launcher EX. Previously I really liked the
GO SMS Pro texting app, but found their
GO Keyboard to look a lot better than it worked (I found
SwiftKey X to be far superior as an input device). GO Launcher EX was a little easier to setup than ADW. To me the GO Launcher EX to looks and performs slightly nicer than ADW. It also has a user changeable shelf area, and without the odd two part scrolling stuff that ADW added to the mix.
Battery drain with 1/7 around 7p/h
The only problem I had with 1/7 during one week of use, was my battery draining about 2-3 times the rate it was (vs TG ROM and effectively the same TheOC kernel). However I changed a lot, including my use of the GO Luancher EX, I couldn't be sure the GO Launcher was not the cause.
Well I over-layed the 1/14 zip yesterday evening. My drain rate is still being reported very high, at 7.7p/h, but the battery percentage is definitely not draining at that rate. I suspect this is just some left over data that I was not able to clear. I will not know for sure for a day or two, but first impressions are that the 1/14 ROM is kinder to my battery.
I have had not experienced any other issues with 1/7 or 1/14 for normal everyday use. No lockups or functional problems (SmartAssV2 61Mhz-1Ghz).
GPS, as good as it gets
I just did a quick GPS test from my home office window. First lock (I hadn't used the GPS in weeks) was the painful multi-minute complaint generating event common to the MT hardware. Without turning OFF the GPS, but leaving the APP, a second fix (only a few minutes later) was only 4seconds. I turned off the GPS, and tried the test again a few minutes later, and it took 11sec. Given our seemingly bad hardware, this ROM seems as good as anything else I've tried.
My favorite part is that all the CM7 based ROMs allow us to try them without having to restore all our user data. I would love to try out the ICS skinned ROM, that I might play with the HDMI output, but I've become accustom to the nice features of CM7, especially the battery life.
Thanks Whyzor for all your hard work!
