Root [ROM] MTDEV-CM7 build 2013-03-03

What tests should I run? Let me know and I will test our phone. I'm mainly using my Nexus 4, so the Triumph is essentially now a testing and bug finding platform. I also recently updated it to the latest MTDEV CM7. PM me when you have an updated CM9 so I can test it before release. I am also expanding our FAQs, you know. I am still thinking of things to add. By the way, I believe there is a release without the boot sound.

I flashed the one with the boot sound... I can disable it be deleting the android_audio.mp3 file in /system/media or do I have to flash the version without the boot sound? I wouldn't mind it as much if it was silenced with the phone.

If I don't want my phone to make unwanted noise during boot, can I just delete this file, or do I need to replace it with a silent MP3?

Looks like it's OK to just delete the offending file. I didn't do exactly that; I renamed it by sticking some spurious characters at the end, and now my phone boots quietly again.

It wouldn't have occurred to me to even question whether this would work, if not for an earlier experience in which deleting some obnoxious sound files caused an unexpected issue.

By the way, performance settings seem to be sticking after a reboot. The GPS is still giving me some serious issues, and honestly it has done that with all the MTDEV releases, save the last few g60styles. The main focus of MTDEV, in my opinion, should be fixing the CM7 GPS once and for all ASAP. The GPS gets close to the right location, but even when on Wifi with the GPS turned on, it places my location in the middle of the street when I am in the house and I appear to be facing the wrong direction. I will upload a screenshot (with the streets blurred out for privacy reasons) that shows what I mean.

Just so everyone know. Yes you can delete the file and it won't cause a crash.

Basicly anything. If you test out music, camera, video (mutiple formats and data rates) and of course, GPS. Everything would need to be varified by concensus, but we are all going to benefit from this work.

I wounder if it's our compasses being uncalabrated?

I have to think the problem is that you have an unrealistic expectation of the sort of precision of the GPS in your phone. At best, GPS usually can't get you much better precision than a dozen feet. Inside a building, it can be expected to perform worse than outdoors, if at all, depending on the composition of the building.

The one picture of yours that is viewable doesn't show your GPS performing any worse than I think can be realistically expected of it, especially if you're indoors; certainly no worse than I see with my own phone, which, by the way, significantly outperforms, my 2002-vintage Garmin eTrex most of the time.

By the way, GPS does not provide any information about the direction you are facing

My front-facing camera (FFC) issue has not been solved. I wonder if what I have is different from the one that others were known to have, and which was supposed to be fixed in this latest version. It's the same as I experienced under to 2012-10-15 version of this ROM; it's the same as I experienced after installing BSydz's patch and it's the same now with the 2012-12-28 version.

Here's how I experience this problem

Very useful info you have posted. I will try and see if there's some way I can calibrate my compass. I'm going to try some tweaking apps and see what results. By the way, tried just inserting a link. Sometimes the WYSIWYG editor on AF messes up, I'll look up the markup of the post and edit it. Not only did you answer my question, but you just reported a bug. Thank you for that. I was testing things out myself, but honestly the Triumph is a massive pain. I can find issues by glancing over things, but I often do not find complex bugs like that. Maybe if you can get some sort of log out of this mess that you're experiencing, it may help MTDEV. Try running Logcat Extreme (free with a floating logcat) and see if you can get something out of it. Every little detail helps. I'm no dev but logcats always seem to help us get things headed in the right direction. I believe you, but I will try and replicate this bug just so we can confirm it as not being a simple error. But it definitely sounds like you are really getting to know our phone, so hats off to you sir! I feel like all of us have went from n00bs to MTDEV hackers overnight, though it has been at least a year around here, for MTDEV anyhow. So this doesn't get lost, do you want to report this in our bug tracker? I will shoot you a link right here.

Is anyone (hopefully more than one) willing to test the ROMs through the versions? I would like to get an opinioned listing for what version of the various ROM (MTDEV ROMs) have the best performace. That way I could look into the files and configurations that were used and maybe figure what combonation will work best.

I will try and run through the previous three later today for GPS performance and wifi.

This is waht I am talking about. Just test away and form an opinion. Hard data would be best. You know, "I ran 10-15 for 5 days and it alway had (yada) GPS performance"

Oh yeah, it's located next to the boot animation
/system/media
If you want a sound, just make sure it is named the same as what's in there. I think it's "android_audio.mp3"

Thanks worked like a charm sweet hearing boot sounds now other than the old Virgin Mobile one.

So I'm popping back and forth from 12/28cm7 and 11/13cm9 builds mainly due to camera. Is there anyway to set it up so that when going from one to the other that I can save my entire build/layout of home screens/etc so that I don't need to reenter all my settings? Right now I use app backup and restore and that seems pretty simple and quick to download everything... just wondered.

BTW, THANK YOU to all developers/testers/etc that have made these roms for my triumph. If you guys were not around I'd be moved on and spending extra money long ago, would rather donate it to the cause like I've been doing !

Well the home screen stuff depends on what launcher you use (as far as I know)

I use adw ex and I back up my adw settings (in adw settings backup/restore), when I switch roms I just restore my adw settings and all my customizations (screens, icons, etc) are set (you do have to have the apps installed, if you don't, it gives you a non-working icon till you install the app/s)

First of all, thank you. Second, if you are bouncing between the two same ROMs, then make a nandroid backup like we preatch. That way you wouldn't even need to reload anything. Not even your cache.

Liking the new build, other than GPS which seems extremely slow compared to previous versions.

I'm coming up on 10 minutes without a lock, the first time I'm trying to lock GPS after the flash.

CM7 10-15 12-28

GPS Lock 1 stop at 27+ mins nothing 4:40

GPS Lock 2 stop at 20+ mins nothing 8:02 no voice

GPS Lock 3 7:20 no voice 12:05 no voice

GPS Lock 4 3:01

If I tried another GPS after finally locking, I would get a fix in about 8 seconds. So I did a reboot after a fix.

The Sharp ROM gives me a fix after 15 seconds from a boot.

Front and back cameras worked on both versions and turning on WIFI took about 21 seconds on each version.

The GPS appears to be better with the 12-28 ROM, but is still way under performing to lock.

Formatting did not work, GPS Test 4 was on 12-28 ROM

I have always gotten a lock (from cold start) w/ 10.15 in about 2 min. Haven't installed 12.28 yet, but on 12.23 I'm down to about 1:30.
"Hot" subsequent locks are usually about 2 seconds max, if not seemingly instantaneous.

Never had an issue with voice.

I'm currently playing Ingress, which relies on GPS.

One of the other things I wanted to know about is video performance. I convert my DVDs into m4p files and I get a slight skip while playing them on stock and CM7. On CM9 it runs smooth. If possible I would like to get that smooth on CM7.

I have a very similar problem. The video playback was always an issue with CM7. What happenes is if you choose hardware decoding it plays fine till it skipes few frames, which is ok. When you download MXplayer (or any other with software decoding capability) and try to play with soft decoding you will get frame freeze. Basically you still hear sound, but the picture will freeze, then unfreeze and tries to catch up to the sound. It's very annoying and g60 was trying different ways to fix it, but so far no results. At this point I gave up and just use U9000 rom.

OK, so the hardware decoder needs to work more like CM9? Or the software decoder?

Yes, this is a major problem for me also, both in cm7 and cm9. I have tried every player, Mx is still the best. I just yesterday tried the sharp rom (froyo) and it worked great, tried the cm7 version of it and the skipping was back. I am going to try the U9000 today. I am one of the odd ones who prefer cm7 over cm9, messed a little with cm10, but cm7 is best in my opinion.
