Root [ROM][WIP] BACKside ROM (CM7) + Green Machine Theme

Link2sd App was updated today some interesting new features I'd like to see what jerry thinks about them especially the app type change abilities:
2.0.1
- added the ability to convert system apps into user apps
- added the ability to convert user apps into system apps
- added "Updated" mark to show if the app has been install as an update to a system (built-in) app
- added "Updated" filter option
- added the ability to integrate "Updated" system apps into system
- fixed freeze/unfreeze bug on some ICS devices
- improved ICS compatibility
- optimized link/unlink/move operations and speed improvements
- some fixes and UI tweaks

- added the ability to convert user apps into system apps
This scares me. Unless you are completely certain the app contains no malicious code, I wouldn't recommend using that feature! Not to mention updates could be borked by the process after installing an update to the ROM.

Integrating a non-system app into the system gives it permissions it wouldn't have otherwise (and are not visible in the permission settings). It's an interesting way to gain some space, but it is by no means safe!

The rest looks like some very good work! ;)

That's what I was wandering what effect it would have to use those features. Never thought about security issues from changing the app like that. I'm not even going to try those.

I like it. Till now I had to integrate updates manually but now it's one slick solution. Works well btw.

I occasionally convert Titanium Backup to a system app, but Titanium Track is a reputable publisher. I only do that kind of thing if I'm experimenting, not as a daily driver usage. I'd never do that with an app that isn't as well known and trusted.

Under the CM7 rom, is it still necessary to go into Airplane mode for a bit to alleviate the idle power drain problem? Or has that been fixed :o I still find myself doing that a lot ...

Hiya! I followed the root directions from here and, wow, thanks everyone for your help, I did it! Feel like Ive got a new phone...lots of fun, but... Ive got a kink I cant seem to work out...
The status bar at the top of the phone has...disappeared. I cannot seem to find how to make it reappear thru any of the menu options on the phone. It seems to have disappeared sometime about when I was customizing the wallpaper with something I downloaded from Zedge...OR, it could have to do with Menu Widgets that I was messing with at about the same time.
Any ideas what I should do next?

1] downloaded update.zip from vm, jcase_rootme.zip, flash_image, and VM670NH_recovery.img and placed onto sdcard
2] did nandroid backup with CWM
3] restored stock recovery via mmarz's flashable zip
4] rebooted into stock recovery
5] installed update.zip
6] rebooted but system hung--so i rebooted into stock recovery again
7] did factory reset
8] installed update.zip
9] booted into froyo--no problem
10] checked /sys/devices/system/soc/soc0/build_id but still showed z4 not z9
11] using about phone/software update i installed update.zip
12] rebooted into froyo and now shows z9
13] applied the gordita root
14] restored nandroid backup
15] rebooted into IHO, checked checked /sys/devices/system/soc/soc0/build_id and still have z9

thanks to all for your help

I could write up a little tutorial for the most painless way to do it...
Think I should?

You definitely should! I am a dummy too, tried it this afternoon, and after some hiccups, finally got it to go. But even the small steps need to be spelled out: Like in cmd, setting the directory to where the adb program is at. Making sure phone is set to usb debugging. The meaning of a few lines in the gordita root--didn't know it was looking for the files in the same folder as adb (not sure how the command line would change if you already had the files on sdcard). stuff like that for us newbs!

After reading some of these posts, it isn't even clear how to get the VM update flashed to a rooted phone.

I don't want to flood this Backside ROM thread...maybe Brotherswing will make a new thread tomorrow with a how2. But from what I gather, most are using their 3rd party recovery to flash the VM update.zip. Not sure why, but you need to flash the update again through the stock recovery (or settings/about.phone/sw.update once rebooted). The first time, I couldn't boot to stock so I went to stock recovery (home.button+down.volume+ power.on) to do a factory reset.

Evening, gentlemen of BACKside cm7.

I seem to be having an issue with music - No matter which directory I put it in (either the sd card or a multitude of subdirectories) I can't seem to get the phone to recognize it. I believe it's a problem with the ROM because I've failed with both the standard music.apk and Winamp. The files I've been messing with are mp3s i snagged from YouTube using TubeMate, if that's important. I'm gonna keep working with it in the meantime, and any advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Anybody else have an issue with opening the picture gallery when the phone is at less then half battery life? If its below 50% then it usually freezes and my phone restarts...

I don't think it's the ROM. I have my music in a folder /music/ on the sdcard and it recognizes it just fine. I use google music.

Hmm..., well after much frustration, i'm guessing it's a problem with those YouTube rips... I popped some other .mp3s in the same folder and both media players caught them. Thanks for the advice!

Battery percentage should not have anything to do with a freeze of the gallery. What is your overclock settings? Too high of an overclock is the primary cause of freezing and crashing with Gallery3D. ;)

I have a rough draft started on a tutorial for dummies with all the download links and step by step instructions. I'll be making a new thread on it, both here and at AC. Jerry doesn't need me hijacking this one!
Oh, and yes, it's clocked too high. ;)

Gallery3d sucks in general no matter the device. If you look on the market you will see the bad reviews. An excellent replacement that's always being updated, I've had since I got the device and they've come very far, would have to be quickpic. It's free and ad free and has its own video player and you can do some editing as well with it.
