Root [ROM][WIP] BACKside ROM (CM7) + Green Machine Theme

Actually, the dalvik cache is in it's normal place now, what I did was stop it from being moved to the same partition downloads go to before being installed. That was preventing us from being able to use a lot of space, even though it showed as available. Now you see less space, but what you see is actually usable. ;)

Check out the work being done on magpie. It requires an ext partition on your sdcard, but you will be able to move all app files to sd, and not worry about re-linking them after a ROM install. I'm watching it, and considering adding it to BACKside soon.

I don't seem to be able to delete the AprilFools.zip file. What's up with that?

File manager's require root access as mentioned above. The reason root access is not built into the default file manager on BACKside, is that noobs would end up deleting or replacing system files they shouldn't too easily. ;)

You can also use terminal emulator to remove the file:
Code:
su
mount -o remount,rw /system /system
rm -f /system/media/AprilFools.zip
su -- gives you super user permissions (root access)
mount -- makes the system directory read/write instead of read-only
rm -- removes the file, the -f forces it

Note- this will leave the system read/write. Rebooting will make it read-only, or you can remount it ro at the end.

This phone is driving me nuts...I just put the 1-31 build on it, without any theme, it's the same as I run on my phone and the thing still freezes and won't boot past the flashing droid dude.

I wiped everything twice, flashed the 1-31 build and now it's stuck...

I want to get a rom working on this phone, then update it to the new touch screen recovery, but I can't even get to the main screen.

Please help...Thanks.

Have you been checking the md5sum of the ROM after you download it?

Try restoring your nandroid backup in recovery, then you should be back to something that works for you.

If that doesn't work, then you may have a bad sdcard.

No I haven't. Didn't even cross my mind actually. I downloaded from the links in this thread and never thought there would be a problem as I've downloaded the file multiple times and they are all the same size.

I can restore the backup I made for her and everything boots just fine (VM looking rom). The problems start after I try to put any other rom on the phone.

I really want to update the recovery but I have to get the phone stable so I can flash it first..

I think I have success.

Restored the first backup and used FlashGUI to flash the new touch screen recovery.

Wiped everything once again and installed the 1-31 build without the Green Machine Theme and the phone boots up just fine now.

Still testing to make sure the freezing issue is solved as I'm leaning toward a corrupt recovery flash for all my troubles.

I got the phone booting with the 1-31 build, but I'm getting a media.something force close.

The Market won't open, it flashes some sort of error and closes immediately and the wallpaper won't show up.

She's changing sd cards tonight and I'll probably format the card and start all over if I can figure out how to access the phone from the pc via the phone recovery (yes, I need help with this also) as I try to mount usb storage and/or sd card and it doesn't show up on the lappy.

I wish I had a spare $100, 'cause I would gladly buy her a new phone just so I could smash the crap out of this one

Would really like to hear more on that.

Stop. Take a deep breath. Relax. Have some dip. Now, don't blame the phone when it could very well be the sd card. A new sd card is cheaper than a new phone. Try putting the card in a card reader, not usb mode from the phone, then see if lappy can read it. If not, bingo! Bad card. You'd be surprised how often they actually do fail. It's possible the partition table for the card is corrupt, try formatting it in a pc (fat32 is probably the best bet.)

If the card tests fine, then you probably have some corrupted data floating around in there. Grab the update wiper in the All things root sticky, flash it, reboot to recovery and flash it again. Then flash your Rom of choice (with gapps if appropriate.) Yes, you lose your data that way, but if it's nerfed anyway then all you risk is getting a good phone back.

How come you always update the backside rom? just curious as to what changes each time? :)

If you go back to the very first post of this thread, Jerry re-edits the original post and lists the majority of the changes for each build. Those changes are also listed from within the updater app in your app drawer. ;)

Every time there is an update, you will find the changes at both of those locations. :)

In the BacksideUpdater app, press your menu key, then select Show All Versions. Select a version date, and the changelog will be shown for that date. ;)

I pull in changes to the internals from CyanogenMod, and I cherry-pick changes to the internals that I like that don't necessarily make it into CyanogenMod (though most do eventually, and that's always a painful merge conflict to fix, oh well). These changes include bug fixes from both AOSP and CyanogenMod, as well as performance improvements and new options.

I personally code changes to the init process (what starts the phone), the updater, and various "theme" related elements, especially the status bar, and to a few other parts of the system. In the past few months, I have added around 20 new options to tweak your phone the way you like, and modified another dozen or so. With each release, I try to offer a new option to make the phone more "your own." ;)

Note- a small side project I am working on will allow you to theme recovery. :)

Alright no more freezing since Jerry set me straight on what to disable since I disabled the wrong thing! Any who, now I've got another issue. I can't upload photos to facebook via wifi or 3g. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't use facebook, but my sister-in-law does, and she's running the latest build of BACKside. No problems uploading her Easter pics to facebook. ;)

The Facebook app has been known to have issues. You may need to uninstall, wipe cache, then re-install it. Of course, as always, make a backup of it first.

So my month of payment came up today, payed yesterday, but now my phone wont send or receive texts. It calls and the internet works, but no texts or picture messages. I called but obviously I cant do their troubleshooting cause my phone doesnt do the ##486644# thing or whatever. What should I do? Its been an hour and a half and I was in the middle of a pretty important conversation..... Should I backup everything, flash the stock ROM, do the trouble shooting and then flash back to BACKside?

Thanks for the gallery advise btw, definitely switched from the stock one haha.

I think text service is down this morning. My wife tried texting me and I never got them and same thing when I tried sending her a test message

What did you do to stop the freezing? I looked back through a few pages of post but didn't see the response. Mine has been have problems with freezing from time to time and not sure what is causing it. I'm using the same apps I had with the stock ROM which never froze on me so a little baffled as to what is causing it.

What recovery are you now using? What are you wiping and formatting?
Any time I have major force closure issue's It's because of residual data that didn't get wiped. I always wipe cache partition and dalvik cache. Then I format the boot, data, cache, and system. Then I select the install zip from sd card/select zip from sd card. Install the update_wiper_1.3.zip which wipes some more. Then I install the ROM (and Gapps if necessary).
If after all this I have a problem with the market app (it happens every now and then) I go back and wipe the cache partition and the dalvik cache one more time. This has always worked for me.

Hey Ben, did you flash up to zv9? I know darn well the GPS hardware and the cell radio are separate, but I'll swear to your deity of choice that since I took the plunge my GPS now locks on in about one third the time it used to. Perhaps there was a firmware update to the GPS chip included in the security update?

No I haven't been daring enough since I don't have reception issues.
