Root [ROM][WIP] CyanogenMod 7 | Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) | Current Version: 09122011

hello everyone, i was wondering how do you upgrade clockwork mod 2xxx to 3xxx. I'm currently running cm6 and wanna try cm7, my friend says cm7 is a beauty :p. I downloaded the clockworkd 3xxx to my comp but it's in img format, I'm not really familiar with this format
how do i upgrade my current clockwork?

Thanks for your help

From what I understand...you can use 2xxx to 3xxx for CM7. BUT...If you just want to update CWM...then install rom manager and there is an option to update to newest.
OR
you just put the img file into the folder where you have CWM 2xxx and replace it.

OH YEAH!
CM7 IS a beauty!!

you understand correctly. cwm 2.1.5.8 will flash all roms perfectly. however if you want total noob proof flashing id' use rommanager. be prepared to but the donate version though. i tried dl/ding cm7 from there and it told me to buy the paid version to do so.

i personally flash back to icarus every few months so i keep 2.1.5.8. also 3.xxx will not flash the metroff fix for mms.

Oh my you need to catch up bro lol. I converted the metroff to edify, so it now works with all versions of CWM. ;)

use the search bar and type ascend flash stock. first result i believe.

So I threw CM7 on my phone last night. So far, so good. It definitely feels like an upgrade. Much faster. (Took FOREVER to figure out how to make my end button goto home instead of putting the phone to sleep.)

I noticed that titanium backup wouldn't restore the first app I tried, so I just went to the market to grab the ones I wanted instead, just in case there was going to be an issue with reinstalling apps that were backed up from the 2.1, though I haven't gotten them all yet.

1. Am I, in fact, better off getting them from market for that reason?

When I tried to grab Flicks Watcher, I noticed I could get the official Netflix app from the market.

2. Is this because of CM7, or was it just released for the Ascend?

Did you make sure the box in Applications that says Unknown sources was check marked? Also, I believe the Netflix app is showing because our phone is now 2.3.4 (I believe). A few apps you'd once have seen on 2.1 are not showing up anymore too. It's not a big deal though, I haven't noticed anything myself just hearsay.

Also, I think it's better to try to restore from Titanium Back-Up personally. Though I've heard of people having problems with the free edition of this as opposed to the paid for version.

By the way: Welcome to the Cm7 family. ~.o

Yeah, not sure if I checked that box before or after I tried, good point, though, could have been it.

And yeah, I've noticed a few apps that I could get on 2.1, but can't get now. But, like you said, no biggie. It was late last night when I noticed, and can't remember what they were, but nothing important.

And thnx! I was nervous about trying out CM7, since I'm still a droidnewb, but all went perfectly fine, and I'm even happier I did now.

A quick question, though. I've seen quite a few folks on here talk about going back to CM6. What are the main reasons?

I cannt send or receive mms

there really no reason to go to cm6 just cause others went back, that all depends on what you feel is right for you. But with cm7 you have more features and stuff and there is more cm7 themes and stuff in themarket for customizations...

My phone runs better with CM6 on it than CM7.
It reels like Huawei had a lot of left over parts from other phones and they threw them together to make the Ascend (that's how it makes me feel anyway lol). We know there are at least 4 different screens that the Ascend can have, and we know that some Ascends can overclock higher than others, so that is why I went back to CM6. Every once in a while I will flash to CM7 just to see if it will now run better on my phone though.

Well, as I've been waiting for fixes/stuff down the CM pipe, I've been hacking away at the kernel.

It turns out there are 2 important things I implemented poorly. RGBX_8888 support (was incomplete) and overclocking. They are important to the overall speed of the phone and graphical quality on 2.3. I was wondering why even at 748 MHz, the system still seem kind of laggy.

So, I went on a kernel hacking spree and I've added some new things:

- Finished adding RGBX_8888 support: https://github.com/isaacj87/kernel-2.6.29-M860/commit/3d32da889926b91a39077591b95c3ac5941e5dde

- Fix and cleanup overclocking: https://github.com/isaacj87/kernel-2.6.29-M860/commit/bfc25008b26e203c61ae091d0bdaafe0f5379aec

- Add 3 new (only 2 are enabled so far) CPU speed governors (smartass, interactive, and lagfree). I've been running smartass and interactive quite well. I haven't tested lagfree yet. I haven't found a good site that explains these governors in detail, but when I do, I'll put it up.

- Since RGBX_8888 has been implemented, I removed this hack: https://github.com/isaacj87/android...mmit/361882c04ee355c433710f7413253c3ab75e1f5e This is a good thing because HDPI themes can now be installed (Honeybread, for example) without graphical corruption. They look nice too. The whole system just looks nicer. Google Maps 5.4.0 still runs like crap, but it's "smoother" now.

- Added a nice hack that will increase the read_ahead speed on the SDCard. This results in really fast read/write speeds. I only have a Class 2 SDCard and I can already feel the difference (8 mb/s write | 20.1 mb/s read). The read_ahead speed was defaulted to 128, I bumped it to 4096. https://github.com/isaacj87/android...mmit/bac6c6919eb3ca2e2f0623575209147820c463d8

- Cleaned up the UI options available for the Ascend. I'm trying to cut down on all the options that don't work on the Ascend.

Now, I'm not saying the Ascend runs like a Nexus S now (let's be serious), but it's getting smoother.

CM7 is starting to fill out. I see a lot of cool stuff coming.

If you like build CM7 for yourself, my repos are stable. Grab the .29 kernel from the chaos-kernel branch (NOT experimental) and build it. I'll need some testers on the new kernel. Don't ask me an ETA on the next build. It'll be up when I put it up. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up because it's been about a week since the last build.

Happy Ascending.

Master Tester here!!!!:D

I'll need some testers, looking for people who had trouble running 748 MHz and users who aren't afraid of wiping clean.

I'll open up an IRC channel sometime in the next few days and people can come test the build. I'll keep you guys posted.
