Wow. I can't even believe the speed of your reply. The active support of this community has given me the confidence to get in there & start tinkering with virtually zero previous know how... And SUCCEEDING! Thanks!

yep, best place on the net hands down. also tiamat has juts updated their kernel. the new version is now 4.10.

Oops, forgive the double post, or noob blunder. & thanks for the update. Rooting & flashing sense rom turned out to be fairly simple. Kernel flashing just as pain free?

yep it is just as easy. just wipe dalvik cache and cache.

give it a few days for the kernel to settle in, before moving on to the next kernel. also make sure you flash the correct kernel. there are kernels for froyo, gingerbread sense, and for aosp. they do not mix well with each other so know what rom you flashed and which kernels go with it, before flashing the kernel.

edit: also do not forget to make a nandroid backup first.

Sorry for so many questions, but do I flash rom or kernel 1st? Both aosp. Also, any tips to not lose contacts, messages, etc?

flash rom first, then kernel... you can backup your messages on your sd card, sync your contacts with google, then re-sync after flash... and flash gapps after rom and kernel...

EDIT - first, backup your messages, (in the message app, menu - back up sms) and sync your contacts, (and calendar) with google, then make a nandroid, wipe and flash, rom - kernel - gapps... wanted to make sure to be clear to back up and sync before you wipe...

Does anyone know if a new sd card needs to be formatted before use? I just got a cheap San disks 16 gb card to experiment with partitioning. If it does need formatting, is that done from the phone or with the card in the phone, loaded as a drive on the computer?

when you partition your card it will format it anyways. so no need to fromat it.

ocean, you are so, so the man. like, for reallys. like, if i were you, some days it would prob be tough for me to get out of the house in the morning just cause i'd be stuck looking in the mirror staring at my own awesomeness. thanks, bro.

LOL i do not about that. i can't stare too long as my mug tends to break mirrors.:o:D

sorry, i know this isn't a tutorial, i'm not trying to abuse the space, this is just the 1st time i've gotten answers this concise & quickly before. if there's a more appropriate forum i should be using, anyone is welcome to send me the heck there. that being said, i'm about to partition a new sd before flashing new tiamat & i dunno if i should use ext 2,3, or 4. Anyone know what i ought to do?

No prob at all.

This is quoted from Ocn's sticky, rooting gingerbread, under partitioning,

"it is recommended that you do this before trying to flash a rom.
so here are the directions on how to do it:
1.copy your content of the card to a computer because partitioning will wipe the card's content.
2.go into recovery and select partition your sd card
3.enter 32 for swap, and 1024 or 2048 for ext2, and do the rest for FAT
4.select upgrade ext2 to ext3
6.select usb-ms toggle and transfer your contents of your card on your computer back to the card.
5.go to the main menu and do a full wipe (min data, dalvik cache and cache)
6.flash the superwipe
7.flash the rom of your choice.
8.reboot

from now on it is recommended you wipe dalvik cache, cache, data and sd ext.before flashing roms. MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT SELECT WIPE SD CARD as it will do just that. your card will be erased. also make sure that when making a nandroid backup to select sd ext to be backed up as well."

Sweet, sweet success. Thanks to you guys my new 16gb sd is partitioned & running destroyer v2 on the newest tiamat, clocked out with SO much extra memory & BLAZING FAST!!! I used the non-sbc version of tiamat, after doing a bit of research it seemed like there were differing opinions about it's safety. Has anyone reported any issues about reduced battery life (or phones exploding & taking out small villages) from running sbc kernels?

no exploding phones here. this a great thread that talks about sbc kernels. check out novox77 #18 post.

I'm getting ready 2 flash my first ROM. Is updating the wimax/pro/radio a requirement for things to operate normal or can that step be skipped (left laptop at home).
If this step is a must, can it be performed thru the update section in the system menu after flashing a ROM?

I heard of one rom that updates radios, sprintlovers, I think it was. Maybe you have to with it, I don't know but otherwise, NO, you do not need to update your radios for roms to work.

I DID update mine, after an OTA came out with them in it, didn't do a thing for me.

So i already have my ROM saved to root. I have superwipe ready. And just did my nandroid. So I just boot to recovery, flash superwipe, flash rom from SD and reboot right? Sorry I'm extremely nervous...
