Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Ok just pasted and no joy. Says it's invalid, so now what? Obviously the code is not going to work if I have copied it from them exactly.

Highlite the number in the generated box on their web page then right click and copy not cut then go to the doss window and left click on the little box in the upper left window but make sure you have the curser in the doss window. Then in the drop down box just select edit and paste it should put it in the doss line then hit enter.
Iff you still have invallid key try redownloading the revolutionary program and the do the copy paste. Hope this works I need to head to work but soneone else will pick this up if it dont work.

some have had to paste into notepad then recopy and paste into window.

ok so what worked for me was using notepad++ not sure why as notepad did nothing for me. but even with notepad++ it took me like 5-6 times before it actually worked. a lot of people have had issues with the beta key, but juts keep at it. it will eventually stick for you.

Just figured it out. It was as I had suspected initially. I recieved a beta code when doing it the first time on my mac via virtual box. I went back and grabbed that code as I used skitch to capture it and voila it is working on the Windows 7 netbook. I am now rooted again. Thank God for that. That was worse than having a baby. Sheesh...and I know because I have had five.

The bummer in all of this is that Virtual Box did not work. It should have. For whatever reason it lost communication to the evo via the usb connection even though I saw no interruption with the device as far as it powering down. Curious. I did have the latest version of VM as well as the latest USB add ins and Guest Additions so not sure why it won't function. Too bad. Anyhow, thanks for your help.

nice!!!!!!!!glad you figured it out. now go and get your flash on:D

I have a serious question. I need to factory reset my phone. I'm rooted with everything still stock. Can I safely factory reset my phone the regular way or do I have to go into recovery and factory reset it?

Hi kids! :D Thought I'd pop in and update you, and provide a giggle! I did all the things that you suggested except the Kernel on Thursday afternoon. All afternoon and evening it was still ridiculous. Went over to The MikMik site to see if anyone else was having a problem with the battery and there were. They were discussing some kind of com.htc.idlescreen wallpaper apk. I posted over there and told them my issue. This is where my noobiness kicked in!! At about 1:00 a.m., I thought, "I don't use any wallpapers!" I decided that if that was the offender, out it goes...DER! Well I'm sure you know that I couldn't get into my damn phone after freezing "idlescreen...blah blah apk" and had to yank the battery!! SO, off to wiping and reflashing we go! Wiped all again, 3 times, reflashed MikG, decided to flash More Freedom Kernel as well. It's been 2 days and I'm still watching the battery wear down. I'm off to read and tweak the Kernel and am hoping I can get a good combo!! Have a great night!! :)

Remember to allow your kernel to "settle" for about 2-3 days before you can really judge its' performance on your Evo. I would also recommend calibrating your battery with this. Keep us posted Kathy!

Thanks again frenchy. I downloaded MikG 2.59 and aggressive freedom. Hoping that combo will work and also got the SetCPU and I'll do a few things. Thanks for the Calibration app!!! I use appbrain to keep track of what I've gotten from that Market cause Market never remembers all of them. Wasn't sure if they were safe though!!

i would use titanium backup though to backup your apps and their data. i think that it is a must have as far as apps goes for root users.

You can find Titanium Backup (paid app if you want full functionality and it's worth it) here or you can use Mybackup (free app) here. Both essentially do the same thing, TB can do A LOT more, and is the standard in the root community.

I've had been using Titanium Backup Pro, Astro, and ROM Toolbox since I rooted. First things I downloaded! Thanks guys!! ;)

Gents. Yesterday I got overconfident after trying out 4 different ROMs and accepted the Sprint/HTC OTA just to see what was in it. Yah... OOPS! My recovery doesn't load anymore. I still have S-OFF and my HBOOT reads 6.16.1002.

I could just try the Revolutionary process again, but I'm not sure if that is the wisest path just yet. I copied the Amon RA v2.3 zip file into the root of the SD card and rebooted into the boot loader. It automatically detected it and asked if I wanted to flash it. I said "no" not knowing if this was wise or not. What's the best approach for getting my recovery working again?

i would say yes to amon ra. you are still rooted so all you need is a recovery. you have got the steps down so go for it and get your flash on:D

and for the future never accept an ota. it could do many things to your phone:
1. it could unroot you. a pain but you might be able to re-root
2.it could unroot you and change your hboot closing any previous exploits. this scenario sucks because you will most likely have to now wait for the devs to figure a way to root the new hboot and that can take a while.
3.it could give you s-on (unrooted) but with a custom recovery that is much harder to get s-off again.
4.or it could brick your phone as well.

just wait for the devs to come out with a rom that has the latest ota. or you could also just flash a rom that has the update cooked into a rom.

Thanks. I just flashed Amon RA, re-applied SU, and now all is good. For those that wanted to know, you can accept the Sprint/HTC OTA update as of yesterday (11/13/2011) and still come out clean in the end.

Yah, I know... now. Thanks for the help. Cheers!

It just doesn't work for me... I don't think I have been this frustrated ever. It won't accept the key. I have tried everything withing both Windows and Ubuntu. Notepad ++ about 10 consecutive times... nothing...

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i completely understand your frustration. i rooted with it on me 3vo and it took me like 5-6 times before it worked. try rebooting your phone and pc and see if it work afterwards. maybe try on another computer as well.

Been rooted for a month, still on MikG2.56, digging it (thanks ocnbrze).
Now I'm going to root my wife's Evo4G.

Question:
*she has some live wallpapers she paid for. Any way to save those or is losing those just the cost of doing business?
*what is the name of the app that will let me save the names of all her apps to the SDCard so I'll know what to reload?

TIA

I'll just wait until they make a way where the key isn't needed. It just doesn't work. The only reason I wanted to root the phone was so that I could use an app to fully unlock the hdmi out capability.

I rooted the Evo 4g correctly and had S-off and superuser permissions. I then tried to un-root my phone(idk why). So I am still rooted but I have s-on and still superuser permissions.

The problem is I cant download kernels, because S-on. So my question is, can you help me get s-off back on? I tried re-rooting and it says i still have s-off, but on the bootloader says s-on

Thank you and have a good day
