Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Been rooted for a month, still on MikG2.56, digging it (thanks ocnbrze).
Now I'm going to root my wife's Evo4G.

Question:
*she has some live wallpapers she paid for. Any way to save those or is losing those just the cost of doing business?
*what is the name of the app that will let me save the names of all her apps to the SDCard so I'll know what to reload?

TIA
if she paid for them then she will still have them. go to the market and under my apps in the menu, the paid apps should be listed. also you can use applist backup to keep track of what apps you have.
I rooted the Evo 4g correctly and had S-off and superuser permissions. I then tried to un-root my phone(idk why). So I am still rooted but I have s-on and still superuser permissions.

The problem is I cant download kernels, because S-on. So my question is, can you help me get s-off back on? I tried re-rooting and it says i still have s-off, but on the bootloader says s-on

Thank you and have a good day

you need to run a ruu to change your hboot so that you can then re-root. try this one:[ROM]RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.53.651.1_Radio_2.15 .00.0808_NV_2.15_release_exe

download the file then run it on your computer. connect your phone via usb and make sure that your phone is set to usb debugging. this will give you a stock rom, stock recovery, and a new hboot. after that you should beable to re-root.

I'm so frustrated! I finally downloaded MikG 2.59 and the next day 2.60, Ugh! Love MikG though. Tried More and Aggressive Kernels and I don't think my Evo likes either. Did battery calibration. I have SetCPU on Smartass. I've been getting 1X instead of 3G, DOUBLE UGH! Did the port and proxy 0's. The darn phone is harder to "dial in" then my dad's Top Fuel Dragster!

your dad's a dragster that is awesome!!!!

just an fyi 1x could be something that was normal for your phone. it is just that mikg is now showing you what you actually have had all the time. you see the stock rom does not show what signal you are getting. it will always show 3g when in actuality you might have been getting 1x all of the time. have you tried and update your prl and profile. also maybe upgrading your radios might help as well.

Hey Ocnbrze!! I believe I have the latest everything. PRL has been 60681 for a while but did another prl and data profile this a.m. for the h*ll of it. Radio is 2.15.00.0808 which is the lastest from all I've seen. I wiped the daylights outta the phone again in amon ra and re-flashed 2.59 without any kernel and see if I can control the kernel that's there. I haven't tried Less Freedom or just Freedom yet so I still have options. Plus I still have Chop Suey and Golden Monkey to try. Figures I get the fussy phone!!!

ok so i'm not sure exactly what your issue is. like i said 1x is normal and most likely what you are and were actually getting.

and as far as kernels go, how long are you waiting before moving on? you should give the kernel a few days to settle in before deciding to move. also what is your settings in setcpu?

I'm MikG2.56. Is there any major difference between that and 2.57,8,9, etc.?

@Ocn, Aggressive had been on since Sat., 3 days, so I think I gave it a while. I tried 1 governor each day, 1st Powersave 245/600, no tweaks available, no profiles (very laggy), 2nd OnDemand 245/998, 30000 sampling, Profile Battery >40 345/500 (was getting hot), 3rd Smartass, nothing else. After new flash of 2.59 last night, Mik's stock kernel, only 3 govs (user, OnD, Perf), chose OnD 40000 Samp, no prof. I'll figure out what combo eventually, just get frustrated that others have it easier!

@Vail, I have no clue about 6 or 7, sorry. I flashed 2.58 then 2.59. I didn't notice a huge difference but 9 had the new 4.54.651.1 ota update and a few small things. My suggestion is to check out the change log. I would guess the the earliest versions are bug fixes and the later ones os/apk tweaks or updates. I noticed no difference between 8 and 9.
P.S., I assume your a skier/snowboarder who likes Vail? I started skiing at 2 at Waterville Valley, Bode's stomping ground!

As far as kernels are concerned, I feel that using chopsuey or freedom and using the interactive X governor with NO screen on/screen off proflies works the best for me. I would consider flashing one of those kernels again and using that governor. Set min at 245 and max 1113.

I'm stuck on superuser, i put in my sd file in my phone and everything goes fine with revolutionary until i get to apply sd card(this is step 11and 12 on root guide). once i select su-2.3.6.3 it starts runnin and comes up saying file not accepted and a white triangle with an ! mark comes up. What am i doing wrong here?:(

Do you have a recovery? power off phone then hold down power and volume down. when the phone turns on you will be in hboot screen.
At the top it should say s-off If it does next select recovery and post here what you have.

yeah i understand your frustration, it took me a while to understand my phone. and not all phones are the same so kernels and setcpu settings will vary. just keep trying some combo's and see if you can find the right one. just make sure not to have too many profiles in setcpu.

and you are correct on mikg. 2.59 and up has the 4.54 ota cooked in.

I flashed Chop Suey last night and used the settings recommended by Andy. So far, so good. I love learning new things but I'm getting some "static" from the "other half" regarding my length of "phone time!" That's more frustrating than the phone time!! Hehe. Get a hobby dude, I'm busy!! I don't ride my Harley much anymore for that reason and he won't get on the back!!!! ROFL. Anyway, I really love MikG and all his extra in this Rom. I'm not ready to give it up. I'll find the right combo!! Again, I really appreciate everybody's advice and patience with a cranky old broad!! <3

Any idea if I can go from 2.59 straight to 2.59 or do I have to go .57 then .58 etc.?

are the instructions legit or will i run into some trouble?
& since i'm a beginner hereeee, whens the best time to root your phone?

ok well the guide is legit and will work for you. my suggestion is to read the guide from head to toe and re-read it again before attempting to root. the process itself is pretty simple ans should take a few minutes if everything goes right. but some may run into problems a long the way and that will take a bit longer. for me when i rooted with revolutionary, it took me like 45-55 min trying to get the beta key to work. it kept coming up as "invalid key"

and just in case you run into this issue, what worked for me was that i copied the beta key (that was generated on the website) and pasted it in notepad++ then i copied it again from there and clicked on the top left corner of the command window and selected edit and then selected paste to paste the beta key in. i had to do this twice and on the second time it worked. not really sure why it took 2 tries but it did.

so read first, root later. and i would do it when you have time to sit down for awhile. and a lot of us here on this forum are around all the time so anytime is perfect time to do it.

Huh? Straight from 2.59 to 2.59?

Full rom and full wipe is always best course of action, however if you want to try it by not wiping all be sure to make a nand and if it you get errors then full wipe and fresh install.

My experience, you will spend more time if you don't full wipe than if you just go ahead and do it.

My fault for not being clear, I meant can I full wipe then go to 2.59. Now that I think about it the answer is clearly yes. My root n00b is showing. Thanks for the help.

I'm a newb, but I think this means you need yo do the revolutionary steps again.

Just flashed MikG2.59, was on 2.56, now i'm in the process of re-installing my apps, my widgets, my splashscreen, etc.
This is my first time flashing a rom since my original root last month.
Pain in my asterik.

Question: does Titanium Backup or some other app save all of your customizations or do you go through the whole thing each time you flash a rom?

titanium backup only removes, freezes, and backup and restores your apps and its data. it has some other features, but those are the main uses for it.

the widgets and homescreen setup you have to do yourself and the same goes for the splashscreen and bootanimation.

it will come a lot easier as you get used to flashing.

but to me that is the fun part as you get to play with your phone :)

alright, i'll read EVERYTHING and try afterwards and let you know if i run into any issues! (:

What he said. I think you can actually restore some of that with TB but it is definitely not a good idea and you will most definitely have issues. If you want to try something like that the best way to do that would be to not wipe data prior to flashing the rom. However, if you have issues afterwards, be ready to just go ahead and wipe everything. If you run into bugs after not wiping data then you will need to wipe data and reflash.

I've learned that it takes more time to do that than if you were to just go ahead and wipe it all from the beginning.

Plus it's fun to set it all up again. :D
