Root ROOTING For Dummies

I've tried all of that. Rename, download new copy, through ROM Mgr., through HBOOT, etc.

I can't get into recovery AT ALL.
I can't flash ANYTHING.
I can't try a new ROM or anything.
I'm sure the problem is I lost recovery.

So now the question is, to start from scratch to try to get this right & a clean version, should I just run Unrevoked again or do I need to UNROOT before I run Unrevoked again?

Ok so your file is named PC36IMG.zip on your sd card? So if you boot into your phone and go to a file explorer, ES or Astro or Root whatever it is you use and go to the the root of your card you see PC36IMG.zip in there.

If you are using ES file explorer it, by default, opens to the root of your SD card. I think Astro is the same, however Root explorer by default opens to / which is the lowest possible spot, so you would need to make sure you are in /sdcard with root explorer. You should see folders in the root of your sdcard like DCIM, downloads, clockwork, my docs, etc.

What i mean is that if it says .zip on the end remove it, if it doesnt say .zip at the end add it.

Hboot auto scans for the file named PC36IMG.zip, if its there correctly it will find it.

The file is just on top of the sd card not in a folder right?

If you just cant seem to flash the recovery from hboot there MAY be another way...try the removing/adding .zip first, make sure its in the right place and try again.

Yeah that's what I told him as well and have been trying to figure that out as well. I'm guessing that it's named without the .zip at the end, but I could be wrong.

I have more than once gone round and round with people on this same exact thing. The easiest way i have found was to tell them if it said zip remove it, if it didnt, then add it.

9 times out of 10 it was .zip.zip, I dl everything directly to my phone and never have a naming issue, eff windows :)

I have NEVER seen an hboot with s-off fail to flash a pc36img once it was named right and placed right...that being said we sometimes go other routes to fix this because sometimes going in circles is more difficult :)

Agreed on all accounts, except eff windows part :p.

I usually just use ROM manager to flash Amon_RA. Actually did that last night over gchat with a buddy that I helped to root his phone. So I know for a fact it works. I've done it both ways though, I've now rooted 5 evos using this guide and have never had an issue.

+1 with using the Guide and +1 for except Windows ;)

6 Evos so far and not an issue

LOL..Well it's kind of one of those do what you know things. I've never learned any of the other machines, not that they are bad, just haven't taken the time to learn them. And in my 10 + yrs of computer work, generally the problem lies with the one sitting in front of the machine. ;) No offense to anyone.

I've tried with and without .zip added to avoid duplication with two different downloads. It never finds it. The bigger problem that I'm saying I have now is NO RECOVERY comes up anymore. Clockwork doesn't come up either. ROM Mgr is doing no good. It says Ra is installed then it goes to Fastboot. When I change it back to Clockwork (any version) it still goes to Fastboot. When I reboot to recovery from RM OR select "recovery" from the HBOOT menu, it goes to the Fastboot screen.

Sooooo...
I think I lost recovery.
I'm going to start from scratch tonight.
Here's the game plan.
1. Unroot.
2. Wipe everything.
3. Root with Unrevoked.
4. Flash MikFroyo.

Do you think I should flash a new radio and/or kernel? If so, what radio and what kernel do you all suggest?

Also, after I root, in what order should I flash the RADIO, KERNEL and ROM?

Thanks as always!!!

evom uses a ::gasp:: mac o.s.? lol jk say it aint so!!! say its linux, not unix LoL (youdoofus is finally waking up today)

Ok we all know you don't have recovery, that's what we are trying to get you to have.

I want to verify that you have it in the root of your sdcard. Can you answer my questions I posted here.

Evomatt is right...to unroot you do the same steps it takes to get yourself recovery, plus you have to go into recovery and flash the s-on tool, you can't do that, cuz you can't get to recovery.

someone pull flash_image please and give it to him and let him push it to system/bin so he can try and flash from terminal...I would but im at work...or we can wait till i get home either way. So PC36IMG isnt working for him and neither is rom manager, terminal is my last shot...

In our shop we call those ID10T Errors... ;)

Problem is I don't think he has adb or knows how to use it...I suppose he could just copy it to /system/bin, anyway...

I dropboxed flash image here and recovery.img here.

You could try these steps which are found in the guide linked in ocn's sig.

1) Verify you don't already have flash_image (open terminal and type "which flash_image". If it just says not found, you need to flash it. If it gives you a location (most likely /system/bin/flash_image) your ROM already has this, and you can skip to step 4.
2) Flash flash_image-signed.zip from recovery.
3) Reboot normally when done.
4) Extract recovery.img from the PC36IMG.zip for the recovery you want
5) Copy recovery.img to the root of your sdcard
6) From the terminal type:

su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

If you don't already have flash_image then I'm not sure how you are going to do it since you can't get to recovery. However the way the guide reads some ROMs come with it already there.

Thank you for the links. He can push flash_image to system/bin with a file explorer like root explorer and change permissions and reboot if he doesn't already have it in system/bin

No problem. That's kind of what i was figuring but when you said push it just sound like adb. Only folder I've ever had problems with just copying and pasting is system/apps. When you are setting permissions just match them with the others files in there. Try that out and let us know.

Yeah I meant adb but root explorer will do in a pinch :)
Still call it pushing

I restarted everything...
Dowloaded a new Amon-Ra File...
Checked to make sure it was named correctly in Astro...
Rebooted into HBOOT...
IT FOUND IT!!!

So I have recovery again!

Now on to flash MikFroyo!!!

Any suggestions on which Radio & Kernel & in which order I should install them?

Thanks for all the help, everybody!!!

Great!

Ok just make sure you have the updated radios which can be found here.

As for kernels it's really a hit or miss thing. I would say start here and here. First link is a basic guide about what each kernel is and what not and the second is much more in depth.

Personally I've had the best luck with 4.3.2 cfs sbc less havs. You might be completely different.

Here is the link to the netarchy kernels. Happy flashing! And welcome back to the land of root. :D

EDIT: Also be sure to follow the guide over at mikmik on how to flash mikfroyo.
