I feel your pain.
I'm rooted, running Launcher Pro, have frozen the bloatware and still have major performance issues. I recently unrooted, did a full hard reset, rerooted, refroze apps, installed far fewer apps, and it's still running poorly.
It constantly freezes on Google Search, the unlock freezes are plentiful, and I can't tell you how many force closes I get every day. I have huge signal fluctuations when sitting in one place (like from full 3G to low 1X) and have dropped more calls in 3 months than I did in 3 years of iPhone use. The audio quality on calls is pretty bad at times as well.
I am VERY disappointed in this phone and in Android in general. Even on light use days, I struggle to get through the day on a charge.
On the plus side, the photos and videos, especially the sound, are better than my iPhone 3GS, but are not as good as my wife's iPhone 4, except for the audio quality of video recordings.
I really wanted to like Android better than iOS, but so far I just can't see it. I tried the Droid Incredible before I got the Droid X and it was not much better. Hopefully, things will improve with Android 2.3, but I'm not holding my breath.
I may be looking at an iPhone at my 1 year point in October. I can't rely on a phone that I have to do a battery pull just to make a call on.
