Root T Mobile, AT&T, & MetroPCS LTE fix.

Good call. That fixed my issue, though still doesn't help my gf. Though she's still on the stock rom/kernel. Her lte works, but still doesn't have the menu shortcut. I'm guessing that being stock and not custom is what's the issue.

Stock does have the menu I think, however stock 4.2.2 needs the build.prop, apn, and sound fixes plus a factory reset to make it all stick nicely, some people have managed to do so without the reset but they ended up doing something else and never heard if the menu was there.

Menu didn't show up for me until I rebooted. I'm sure you've already done that, just throwing it in. :)

Trying to wrap my head around this. Got a N4 this week which I've rooted and flashed the mysterious AOKP ROM. The radio is .48. Do I still need to flash the .33 and do the edits, or just the edits?

Yes, a .33 radio or earlier is necessary for lte to work properly. Since the device isn't certified for LTE use with FCC, Google implemented software to prevent using the phone in that manor. So the only way to do so is to use a version before they patched it.

Great. So I've done all the steps up th the lat one before reboot. I must be blind, because I can't find the Network Mode setting.

You're not the only one. For some reason, it can be really tough to get that option to appear. It isn't necessary to get LTE to work, but is a pain if you don't have it. Basically you will need to redo the dial code every time the phone reboots. I so far haven't been able to get it to show on the stock rom with many attempts to fix it, though it seems to show up on custom roms no problem.

So Network Mode is the same as Network Type? And I need to set Network Type after every reboot? BTW, I'm not running stock. I'm on Mysterious AOKP. So maybe not all custom ROMs show it

If the menu appears, it should appear just like my picture. After making sure the radio is flashed, the build.prop is fixed, and the dial code has taken affect, and the apn settings set, a reboot might be required before it will appear. If it does, it should look something like that.

Yeah, I'm not getting the Network Mode section. Everything has been down correctly. The network type doesn't hold through a reboot, which I guess is what you're referring to.

Do you think I'd have more luck with a different ROM?

I can tell you there is a unofficial CM 10.1 with LTE on xda forum that has everything setup it "should" be just a simple install of the rom.

There are others that have support built in as well but I dont know them.

So here's where I'm at guys. I did the setup and, since I barely get EDGE in my apartment, I took a drive to a spot where I got 15Mb with H+ yesterday. I got 4G, but no LTE, at around 13Mb. Meh. But...the upload was sweet, about 3-4 times faster.

Anyway, since I can't get the network mode to stick over a reboot, I've gone back to H/H+. But I'm wondering if there's any advantage to staying on .33 (or .27 even) or just go back to .48. My whole objective here is to make my reception at home better. Or is the only thing that's going to fix that is more towers?

On the Nexus 4, if you see 4g in the signal icon, that is LTE. So you had it at some point. As far as reception goes, it really depends on the device, but most people probably would say .48 is better than .33

For me reception has been the same for .33 and .48 However I did have a 1% increase in H+ speed on .48 vs .33 where reception was good.

That's exactly what I saw, thanks for confirming. I also had a huge drop when connected via H+ but using the LTE apn. Something like 85%. I had read earlier that this throttling happens, so at least I knew what to expect.

Yes using the fast.t-mobile apn will drop the H+ speed considerably, though if LTE is usable it is much faster/better then the H+ Not always faster in terms of speed but in upload and ping and usability.

So I noticed. Upload was about equal to download. Well, if there's ever a fix where I can get network mode to stick over a reboot, I'd switch. As it is, I reboot way too often and manually setting it each time would get old real fast. :D

That's understandable. I really wish I new why it was so picky about showing. But at least the option is there in case you want/need it. It's for that reason that I'd stay on the .33 radio if that's an option and just have 2 apn's, one for epic.tmobile and the other for fast.t-mobile

did you follow the instructions on that hippowise site?

a factory reset is required for a stock rom to get the settings to stick.

Also someone on xda forum had a script of some sort that allowed you to get the setting to stick without factory reset, however it sometimes reverts so something to keep in mind.

That's a good idea. Is changing apn dynamic or is a reboot required?

I'm not on stock (I'm on Mysterious AOKP). Besides, wouldn't a factory reset reformat my sdcard? Not a dealbreaker, but I'd certainly like to avoid it.

That script seems promising. I'll look for it. Thx.

Edit: just checked out hippowise. No, I had not seen that. I simply followed instructions in the OP. Thanks for the tip.

Apn's are dynamic to the best of my knowledge, though I admit this is one feature I haven't played with a lot.

A factory reset won't clear the sd card if you use a custom recovery like cwm or twrp to do it. Only stock recovery wipes the sd card.

you do not need a reboot for apn changes, the signal will go dark for a few seconds then come back with the new apn setting.

I do this often, if lte is not available I use epic apn for better H+

actually the factory reset is required on any rom that does not have the edits built in.
so if you install a new rom with it built in your getting factory fresh too

Ahh.... So when I do a complete wipe in TWRP (system, data, caches), that's considered a factory reset. With my PC mentality, I always considered it going back to a factory stock state, which would involve a reformat and loss of data.

It seems like going for LTE would definitely slow down my crack flashing, which might be a good thing, lol. Another consideration - when at home I'm lucky to get a couple of bars and EDGE2. When I was on .33 and the LTE apn, I got zero connection. Not that I need mobile data at home since I'm on Wi-Fi, but does that impact receiving/making phone calls? Sorry for the noobish questions, but this is new territory for me. ;)
