The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

Let's be real. No one has and no one will get announcements down right like Apple. They are in a league that is untouchable in that area.

Some concerns about the Moto X for me though revolve around the rumored specs. I hope Motorola doesn't pull a 720p screen out again... The Droids were nice phones until I saw 720p in 2013, almost 2014!

After all the market response, why do they still lock consumers out from full capability of the phone.

If the reason is because they don't want people getting in and screwing it all up, then provide a disclaimer and allow people to re flash (ie provide that option or instructions)

Market response? I posted my feelings about allowing unlocked bootloader with recorded warranty loss and not a single poster at Motorola support forums agreed. All the regulars piped in that rooting and unlocking is a security risk and motorola has was best for us in mind. I couldn't get a single person there to agree with me.

Sounds like they're less informed.

Btw - still the first non-Pentile 720p OLED screen I've heard of on a phone.

What's the point of 1080p in a phone? 4.7 inch screen, held closer to your face than your TV. To me, 720p, 1080p, is doesn't make a difference.
 
What is a pentile screen I keep reading the word but do not know what it means I am sure my moto X would know tho

yea same here... 1080p in a 4.7" screen would just be overkill and would end up pulling down battery life/gaming performance, 720p seems like the sweet spot to me.

As for a locked bootloader I really hope either the T-mobile or googleplay store versions are unlocked. I don't really mess around with my phones THAT much but it would be nice to have the option if I want to try. Isn't Android all about having options?

Most screens you've seen in your life, beginning with your TV, are RGB - each pixel is made of red, green and blue subpixels.

A Pentile screen, unique to Samsung phone display technology because they bought the company that came up with it, uses 2 subpixels per pixel and distributes the colors, with pixels sort of sharing subpixels in a proprietary way so that for most things, you don't feel like you're missing out.

For still material and text, it's not as crisp as an RGB display.

There have been a lot of marketing statements about Pentile displays and most of what people think they know about it are myths.

The president of the company that invented it is a member here and has discussed it at length in threads with me and a few others conversant with display technologies, so we put a lot of myths to rest and learned things that haven't been published elsewhere.

A non-Pentile display - iow, a standard RGB display - is going to appear sharper to many of us, as in higher apparent resolution - it has 50% more subpixels than a Pentile display.

Not all 720p screens are equal.

Here are some various Pentile and RGB arrangements in extreme close up, just to give the idea -

There's also Pentile RGBG, red green blue green. We've seen RGBW on LCD displays, RGBG on OLED displays.
 
What's this no wireless charging rumor on latest phandroid article (about price)? I haven't seen that anywhere.

I agree, I'm posting this from a phone with exactly those specs.

And I prefer it with text to the SGS3, same specs but Pentile. The Pentile 1080p SGS4 doesn't bother me.

Notice above, AntimonyER has the RGB 1080p DNA and along with many HTC One users, can enjoy the difference.

My eyes aren't as good, so I can't enjoy them as others can.

People get funny talking about their eyes in the forums on this subject and I've never understood why.

Eye-brain combinations are almost as unique as fingerprints and they vary throughout the day. We all have different sensitivities to light, color, contrast, dot resolution and so much more.

If I should suggest what differences people may see or not, I mean no offense.

My point in saying that this is an RGB 720p OLED display is to say that it's definitely different enough to be worthy of a good test drive in my opinion.

It's not yesterday's technology just because it says 720.

You may like the screen on the DNA, One or SGS4 better and that's fair enough.

Just give this one a good looking over and don't sweat the numbers before deciding, that's what I'm saying. :)

I agree! My take is its all hype, and when it comes to this whole 720p vs what is supposably newer I say hogwash. How bout I prefer an iphone 5 screen to all these supposed to be newer technology screens like the DNA, ONE, and GS4!

Just give me semi deep blacks, clear white text, and no pixels and I'm happy! Whether its 720p or 1080p is pretty low on my want list. Whatever keeps the price point in nexus territory is my choice...lol!
 
Yeah, another thing is my phone has a massive 5" screen. Also my previous phone was a Galaxy Nexus, which had a 4.65" 720p pentile OLED screen. And I was happy with that screen too, until I put it next to the DNA that is. But it's all relative, and the fact of the matter is, unless you are comparing the display with other phones constantly you won't even be thinking about it. And I think that is what Google is counting on here, bring the price of the phone down by toning down the specs, but still giving an excellent experience that 95% of folks will be happy with. And with carriers moving away from subsidies, this is a genius move. People were already willing to buy mid-tier phones to save $100 subsidized. What choice do you think they will make when the difference is $300?
 
Whenever I look at my One screen I can tell a difference too. I am willing to compromise here a little as1080P is gorgeous but I look at ppi at this point more than anything. Really anything at iphone and above is going to give a good experience. I am very interested in finding a no compromise smaller Android device. Obviously it is always personal preference, but the only thing that keeps me using the iPhone is its complete one hand use throughout the day. RAZR M looks solid now but I just left Verizon. I am hopeful the X will bring enough to the table to be my daily driver.

I agree about one handed operation. At this point in my life with running around so much and taking care of multiple businesses throughout the day I just cant be bothered with a two handed device, and that's coming from someone who has pretty big hands. It was fun for a while when the Note came out, but to me that phase is pretty much over. I carry 2 devices most of the time, and on a daily basis one will most likely be an iphone, I'd like the other to be something in the Galaxy Nexus size range.

I am same boat. Running around for work, with kids, I can't use a big phone (I am big guy and it still bothers me). I will use either a Nexus 7 or iPad Mini as my second device. I guess at some point I should commit to an ecosystem but I really do like using both.

I am looking forward to seeing how tight this device is with a 4.7 screen. Hoping it can be a win/win.
