Root The Official "I can't get my NC to root" thread

Hey amr405o/Harleychick, can't stay away from the forums. I returned my Gtab as I mentioned on the Gtab threads.

Harley is absolutely right, the NC rooting, and now the SDcard 2.2 froyo I find confusing also. I wanted to mess around with boot off the SD as per instructions off this thread.

The MOST difficult part is getting the damn file to extract within (dwnld the Win7 extractor didn't work) and then placing it on WIN32img.to write to the Sdcard. This is the biggest pain in the ass!

I can't seem to make it work and I've rooted a NC purely by accident, and Gtab easy (with help from you and SolidOrange).

When I read the thread i wanted to do the SDcard thing and go to BN and try it out. I've yet to get it on the card. There's a step or two of explanation missing and for me it's here.

I'm not sure why one would need to employ the use of 7-zip to root. I've only used that once and that was to decompress a .tar.gz file rather than a .zip (used when i had to reset my NC with full removal of CWM- but that's a whole other conversation). That was a pain, but necessary. Window's stock unzipper works for the rooting process in my experience.

Just wrote to SDCard, will give it a shot tomorrow. If it can actually dual boot, might buy the NC again. Is it true is rooted you CAN read in BN the freebie hour?

That's my understanding...it works with with the latest 1.1.0 firmware (I guess it was not working on the 1.0.1 firmware).

I cannot actually verify (from personal experience) that it works but that is what has been reported.

Don't feel like you cheated yourself

While the Nookcolor may be running 3.0 soon, the A70 is still a nice device. You will probably never see 3.0 on the A70, but Android 2.2 runs well enough on it and it is a great multimedia device. I have very few complaints with mine other than the 256MB of RAM just isn't enough...but it's definitely a solid choice for less than $300!

And that is why I got the NC in the first place - because of the RAM and I knew it would be getting all of the good stuff. BUT, you know, I just don't have the know-how and the time/energy to be dealing with the complex stuff. I need something that works the way I want it to right out of the box - and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg (just 2 knuckles and a shoulder blade, but I digress....). My tech is like my motorcycle - I don't know how the engine works (and I don't need to), I just know how to ride. Same with my Incredible: I don't know how it works, I just know that it does & I love it!

Besides, I know me - I guarantee less than a year from now, I'll be buying something else. You should see me go through cell phones - I can't tell you the last time I had a phone last me a year...... My husband can't stand it!

i'm the opposite on the phone front. I have a dumb phone (LG envy 3). But i'm loving every minute of not paying the data plan

freaking data plan pricing turns me off. But, when I saw the Galaxy S II released at MWC. Oh man, i don't know if i can hold back much longer

So I am running 2.2 on my sd card. I guess no market for me. I'm confuzzled to say the least. In any case, it was fun.

I haven't run 2.2 on the NC so I'm not entirely sure how it works...but with the 3.0 preview, you had to add some gapps after installing the ROM. Is this similar?

Seems like the market is all americonium needs... (correct me if I'm wrong americonium).

Last night I auto-nooted my Nook Color with the Auto-Nooter 3.0 and it went very smoothly. Just follow the guide and be patient when booting for the first time after inserting the SD card. It takes a few minutes. Don't panic.
Don't forget to either physically remove the SD card before shutting down/rebooting again, or simply unmount it and format it from the Nook Color. Then it can stay in as extra storage.
Download and install a launcher from the market- something like the ADW and the N button will let you switch between the default Nook desktop and the traditional Android desktop. Very cool and useful if you like to use the Nook as a reader.
IMO, for the money, it's the best value on the market right now. Few months from now there will be better and less expensive tablets out there, but that's true at any given time.
By the way, I tried the Gingerbread preview build for the Nook running from the SD card (type 4) and it was painfully slow to respond.

Did you reboot it a few times? I have heard there are more issues with screen responsiveness before it reboots a couple of times...don't know why and it doesn't make much sense...but some people are reporting those issues.

Also, since it boots off your SD card...I think slower SD cards will affect performance.

If you used Auto-nooter 3, be sure to check out the above as Auto-nooter 3 seems to cause complications when you use CWR for certain functions. It can get really frustrating if you aren't ready for it.

There is no Gingerbread preview (or development at all that I know of). I think people say Gingerbread...and mean Honeycomb (I find myself typing GB occasionally and then realizing it and changing it to HC).

Cyanogenmod7 is gingerbread based and can be found. Keep in mind this is not an official release so dont expect full functionality though some people report good results.

Yeah, Root Access is gaining access to the Root of the phone. The root are essentially the protected system files. By gaining access to them, you are allowed to do things that you otherwise would not: removing bloatware, installing apps that call on protected system functions (i.e. Hotspot on a phone), installing custom Roms (like an Ubber-Launcher with much more functionality including various system improvements).

When you first root the NC, is doesn't really change anything other than give you access to a few new apps that you otherwise would not have access to: Market being the most important in my eyes. That allows you to Download and install a different Launcher (i.e. Zeam, ADW, LauncherPro) and then populate your homescreens with widgets and apps.

Anyway, Rooting doesn't HAVE to affect the functionality of the Reader itself, but allow you additional access. The poster before you mentioned using the Home Button (the little "n" button in the middle of the NC) to switch launchers and such. When you root and install a Launcher and then press that button, a little window with 3+ options will pop up: Home, Softkeys, Zeam.

• Home - brings up the stock launcher.
• Softkeys - brings up a tool tray with the normal buttons that come with Android: Back, Home, Menu, and Search.
• Zeam - brings up your downloaded launcher (of course Zeam is just an example).

Hope that makes some sense. Rooting does allow more options, but that's the basics and probably what most people are sticking with for now. As time goes, more 'stable' roms will be released and we will all begin to experiment a bit more.

My biggest hichup right now is with Rom Manager, and app that allows you to backup your system and also install new Roms. NEVER do that unless you understand what you're doing and have created a backup first. I'm having trouble making the Backup so I've not proceeded further. But that's a whole different conversation.

I'm glad it helped.

Softkeys in particular confused me for a while. The main thing with it is that the NC only has 1 static-button along the bottom, the "n" button. Android phones all come with the 4 standard buttons (Back, Home, Menu, Search) in some arrangement. Softkeys is just a way to overlay those buttons when needed. One click and there they are virtually, opposed to hardwired.

Example from the web (little round button [middle right] is the Softkey-Starter that can be moved anywhere on the screen and is ALWAYS there so that you can bring up the softkey-tray [bottom of picture] whenever needed):

So, now in addition to wimpy, you can call me ditsy - after using the Archos for 3 days, back it went. Couldn't get used to it - I don't know why. Going back to the NC (hadn't actually sent it back yet). Still getting my nerve up to root, but I love the clear screen, and even if I don't root, I can get on the web and get (almost) all I need.

Besides, now that I have read so much about rooting, I'm much more open to the idea. I honestly think its all the steps to rooting that scares me - plug this in, sideload this, go to this site, enter this, etc. If someone (hint, hint) could just come up with a one-click method, I'd be over the top!

I may still be asking for some hand-holding if I do root. Are you (or anyone else) up to the task?
