Root The Official "I can't get my NC to root" thread

Yeah, we'll help ya out. :D

Since you've done some reading...you probably have a guide in mind that you are going to follow. If you get hung up, it will be MUCH easier to help you figure out what is going on if you can link us to the exact instructions you are trying to follow ;)

I used monster root pack. You do have to burn a file to the sd card but once that is done there are very easy instructions to take you through the procces of rooting.

So, now in addition to wimpy, you can call me ditsy - after using the Archos for 3 days, back it went. Couldn't get used to it - I don't know why. Going back to the NC (hadn't actually sent it back yet). Still getting my nerve up to root, but I love the clear screen, and even if I don't root, I can get on the web and get (almost) all I need.

Besides, now that I have read so much about rooting, I'm much more open to the idea. I honestly think its all the steps to rooting that scares me - plug this in, sideload this, go to this site, enter this, etc. If someone (hint, hint) could just come up with a one-click method, I'd be over the top!

I may still be asking for some hand-holding if I do root. Are you (or anyone else) up to the task? :)
HarleyChick, check this out.

It's a video step by step. I had the NC, GalaxyTab, and GTab. Rooted Gtab and NC. No one's rooted the Galaxy. I've returned all my tablets, I was/am looking for a true laptop replacement, none are ready for primetime. But, these guys are great here to get rooted, YOU CAN DO IT, do you realize in your last post you're getting the lingo!

I've got a few days off now. If you get the nerve up, just PM me when you want to do it. I can give you my gmail address and we can use google chat to walk you thought it. Most likely, with all the reading you've done, you'll have no problem.

We could even try using IRC, but I've never used it before.

Just ley me know. I've rooted the NC 3 times now. I'm on my phone right now, but when I get home, I can ley you know which guide I thought was the most fool-proof.

freenode Web IRC (qwebirc) for IRC. i go by various forms of the name cabbie on there.

If you join IRC, state your problem clearly and don't be overly-persistent. People there are on their own free time, it may take hanging out a while to get someone willing to do hand-holding. Whenever we do, its going to be a half hour to an hour to get you through it if you hit a real roadblock.

ive watched the NC development from the beginning and by far the biggest sticking point is for windows users getting the right drivers, and windows users using winimage. It can definitely be done but isnt nearly as straightforward as mac or linux.

Thanks so much for the offer of help. After watching the Autonooter video the entire way through twice, I'm going to try that method tonight and cross my fingers. If you are on this evening, I'll post if all goes well - and more likely if it doesn't!

There you go again being so nice to ditsy old me. Going to try Autonooter tonight. May need help, but if it works as well as it does in the video, I'm sure I'll be okay.

One side note that I've learned, after roooted and while going through the Setup steps (Youtube, Gmail, and Market). When you get to the Gmail setup, open the Gmail App and you'll see a message that the email account has not synced. Instead of entering the settings (which will often drop you into the home screen), just click "Refresh".

For whatever reason, until I've done that, the Market will not process downloads.

Is that after you have initially set up your gmail?

No, that would be during. When you sign in with your account you need to actually go into the gmail app and get your mail messages to show up. If you just sign in and exit, your mail messages may not sync (and from what bgrutter has seen...will not allow market downloads).

Okay, I've got a problem. I was following the video for Autonooter, and I got right up to the point where you insert your sd card into your shut-down NC, and then plug the cable into the NC and the computer. But instead of staying off for the 5 minutes or so that it shows in the video, my NC turns right on as soon as I plug it into the computer. No root, no nothing - its like I didn't put anything on the sd card. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

that means the image of autonooter wasnt burned to the SD card in a way nook knows how to read.

are you on windows?

I think cabbie hit it on the head. This is the part I think most people have problems with. I had to use WinImage even though the guide I was using when I first rooted named another program because the program they recommended wouldn't work for me.

The imager that I downloaded, which came from the youtube video for Autonooter, is win32disimager. Is that the same as WinImage? If not, how do I get WinImage or can you suggest another that I can download? Thanks.

bgrutter - I appreciate the help, but I got through all of that. It was after when I went to plug in the NC and: first, my NC didn't stay shut-off, but started right up when I plugged it in, and second, when I checked my micro SD, it looked as if Autonooter had not be burned onto it. I think UB has it right - Win32diskimager just didn't work for me. Going to try the WinInage that UB suggested from the link provided by euph_22. I'm hoping that the process is similar to that of Win32 - the Newb part of me is showing, I know.

BTW, I'm rarely on my home computer before 8:00 pm EST, so I can't do any of this until after then. Just wanted all you "helpers" to know that since you are all trying so hard to come through for me.;)

Here you go. Images cropped. No arrows or anything on the images, but the important points have been selected and will inherently be highlighted. Please let me know if I've forgotten anything.

Step 1: Locate Win32diskimager Zip.

Step 2: Unzip.

Step 3: Open program.

Step 4: Click file select button "..."

Step 5: Find .img file that you want to burn and make sure proper drive is selected (Drive [H] in my example).

Gotcha. Personally, I've not had any trouble with win32diskimager, so it's hard for me to help troubleshoot. Hopefully their right.

One thing I have to ask, are you sure your NC was off and didn't just have the screen off? Just wanted to make sure.

Also, when you burn the image, the name of your SDcard will be changed. And, if you click on it within your computer, you will not see the image files, but rather 4 or so other files.

I turned it off and let it sit for several minutes prior to plugging it in; and when I plugged it in, it went through the usual start-up cycle, so I'm pretty sure it was off when I put the SD card into it prior to plug in.

The only other part that did not go exactly as the video, is the the two downloads (the Autonooter and the Win32) did not go into a "downloads" folder. When both of them came up for download, a window popped up and asked me where they should be placed, and I designated that they should go on the desktop. I don't know if that makes a difference, but it does take one step out of the procedure (where in the video he tells you to move it from the downloads folder and place it on the desktop). Could that be part of my problem?

No, that shouldn't matter at all. As long as both files downloaded and you know where you unzipped each to. Win32 should function fine no matter where you have it located.

You saw the green progress bar as the image was being burned? Which version of NC ARE YOU running, 1.0.1? Which auto-nooter version are you flashing?

Yes, I saw the green bar progressing as the image was being burned. That's why I was so surprised when it didn't go exactly as I thought it would.

I have NC version 1.1.0. Which version (?) - there are three versions listed in the description to the video on youtube. I used the one listed for NC version 1.1.0. Sorry - can't get youtube at work so I can't give you a name or number.

Okay guys. Is there a particular "version" of WinImage that I'm supposed to use? There doesn't appear to be a version for Windows 7, even though there looks like there are about a hundred different ones!

I tried again to burn the autonooter file to my sd card - using Win32 and a different sd card this time - and again, as soon as I plugged my NC into my computer it turned on and went through the startup cycle. Is this normal? Am I just not waiting long enough? Will it eventually shut itself off? Feeling very helpless and frustrated right now.

Just got home. PM me if you'd like to get on Google Chat or IRC. Doing this via thread can be a bit tiresome.

If you're on nook 1.1 then you'll need autonooter 3.0. This is technically the how to put 2.2 on a nook without root thread so you can throw your questions about Autonooter on the thread below because I'm sure your questions and experiences can help others.
