Root Unable to download TWRP 2.5.0 using GooManager

When I download, I click on a download link to the file from my PC, the normal route, and choose the destination to where I wish to save said file. I then select "save," and it's supposed to simply save to that destination/folder. I've been doing it the same way for as long as I can remember; I haven't changed a thing. For some reason, something is preventing me from downloading directly to any destination on the phone.

Is this the first time you've tried to do this since updating to JellyBean?

If so that is most likely the problem right there. HTC changed the USB protocol for connecting the phone storage to a computer. Now its an MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) connection, where before it was USB mass-storage device class (MSC) (if I'm not mistaken). Where before the computer would unmount the storage in your phone and mount it to your computer, the MTP doesn't work exactly the same. That's probably why it won't download directly anymore.

I notice now when I try to copy photos out of my phone to my PC, I can't see the thumbnail of the photo on my phone through my PC anymore. I need to right click and select "Preview". I thought I broke something at first, but eventually I realized it was the new USB connection protocol. Or at least that was what I thought.

Hopefully I made sense there, and I'm correct. :o

@EM, does this sound right?

So what's the secret? Or are we relegated to downloading to our PCs, then copying and pasting to the phone?

Assuming the md5 check works out, now that I've downloaded Viper, all I have to do is:

  • Make nandroid backup
  • Wipe clean (still done by wiping cache, Dalvik, and factory reset, or is there a new, more recommended procedure?)
  • Install Viper
Does this sound correct?

Almost.

  • Make nandroid backup
  • Install Viper
    • Use option (default) in the Viper installer to do a full wipe.
Viper uses a form of super-wipe, let it handle that for you.

If you wipe from recovery and then try also from within the Viper installer, you'll be in for a very long wait.

I personally don't trust the MTP connection for that.

Try to save to pc and then copy over.

Or download using your mobile browser.

Verifier checksum on the phone, you can use Android File Verifier for that, before flashing.

Question re. this file checker app--which option do I choose to use it? There are numerous things to do with this, but quite honestly, I'm not sure what exactly I'm supposed to do to verify the md5 checksum. :p

Since we're on the subject of Viper, what's the Fapple add-on for? Should I ignore that?

I'm not really sure what app you got for that. Usually it's just check md5.

You'll want #fapple. Trust me;)

It brings back all that apple forced HTC to remove from the code. App associations option in settings will disappear, and the phone will work like it should. :)

OK, cool. I did download that as well, so I just install that after Viper is installed?

Wait - almost.

Once you flash Viper 3.1.5, boot up, make sure it basically boots. Do minimal setup or skip it.

Then go to settings, about phone, and look for the Viper OTA to 3.1.6 - it's minor, but you might as well.

Then go back and flash #fapple.

Once you boot up, you can do your setup again - there's a setup app in the app drawer.

I'm late here - all good on your md5 sum?

(I sent him to scary alien's Android File Verifier gang.)

Yeah. #fapple is nice but you usually have to do it over after any OTA.

They usually do a full rom with any OTA so you wouldn't have to do this dance, but 3.1.6 was too tiny to warrant that. Mostly just fixed some typos.

OK. BTW, I've run into a problem after installing Viper--Google Play store won't work. Every time I open it to download apps, it immediately closes with the "stopped working" error. :(

OK, but first I'm waiting. I installed Viper, then went to update it, downloaded and installed the OTA update for it, but now after rebooting, it has been sitting for quite some time on the home screen with its red graphics and red dots bouncing around. When I installed the main ROM, it didn't take more than a few minutes to reboot and get going. After this OTA update, it's been sitting on that aforementioned screen for the last 15+ minutes. Is that normal?

I'm starting over and skipping the Viper OTA update. For some reason my phone doesn't want to take that. It won't come out of the startup screen if I install that update.

I was just going to say, start over.

Bad flash can happen anytime.

The update really is safe - but not if it was a bad download or flash of it.

You're not missing anything important by skipping it.

Well, the update's md5 checked out, but like I said, I'm just going to skip it. I'm sure it shouldn't take what was >40 minutes for the home screen to come up.

FYI, still no go on Google Play. I've tried all the aforementioned fixes and it just won't work. Period. If I can't get it to work, the ROM's useless and I'll have to try another.
