Root Unable to download TWRP 2.5.0 using GooManager

Am I reading it correctly that if I choose to go the Windows route, then there is no CD involved? I'm a bit confused as to that part. :p

sorry i just got off of work and am pretty beat so i was not paying attention.....looks like you can do this on a windows pc.

so basically you
1. download the file, and extract it.
2. Right-click -> run as administrator distiller.exe
3. allow the exploit to do its work.
  • Your device will reboot several times throughout the process.
  • The entire process takes 5-10 minutes.

and make sure that you do not have htc sync installed(drivers are fine, just not the program)

I actually had installed it a few days ago to check on something, but I specifically remembered to UNinstall it. :)

BTW, is it OK to do S-OFF before I install a stock, rooted ROM, as was alluded to above, or must I put on a rooted deodexed ROM first? Just wondering.

with moonshine you do not need to worry about software. all that is required is that your firmware is up to date. if it is not then you will need to re-lock the bootloader, take the ota to get it current and then unlock and install twrp(not sure on recovery, but it can't hurt to do so).....so no need to worry about a stock rom right now.

My firmware is the latest, so this sounds good. Hopefully I can try it tonight.

While I'm on this subject--because it appears I'm not truly rooted (Titanium indicates that), but I am unlocked and do have TWRP 2.5.0, after I use Moonshine, do I then just choose a custom ROM from the many out there to give me full root? Just curious. This is what I get for not having done this in over 9 months or more.

well tb has been known to give peeps the wrong idea. if you get a root checker or if you go into terminal emulator, you will get a more accurate answer. now if you are on a stock rom and not flashed the su file then yes you are not fully rooted.

if you flash a custom rom then you will be fully rooted as su is cooked in.

so yes after moonshine you can then flash any rom and be fully rooted with s-off!!!!;)

Well, that was quick. I'm unable to download anything to my phone--same problem I experienced with my SD card I'm now experiencing with downloading to my phone. (SD card downloads were fixed by reformatting the card.) I try to download this file directly to the ~ Download folder, but I get this message:

You can't save here. Please try another location.
WTF is that?!?

I know, but the file is supposed to be downloaded to the phone then extracted there, isn't it? Regardless, why am I still getting that error message whenever I want to save files to a folder on my phone (I had some pics on my PC I wanted to transfer to a specific folder on my phone but couldn't).

not sure where you read that it needs to be extracted via the phone. you need the file on your pc and extracted there. only use the phone if it says so in the instructions. the rooting process is done by your pc. make sure that you have usb debugging turned on and make sure you satisfy all of the prerequisites for moonshine first.

See my post that was posted right after yours above.

If what you say is correct, then just what the hell is the "~/Download" directory requirement for?

Here's instruction item #4 from Moonshine:

It sure looks clear that the author is saying to download it to the phone's ~/Download folder, then according to this:

You would extract it in that specific folder itself. But what option to choose:

Extract files...
Extract here...
Extract to moonshinejewel...

ok i can see how you can misread that. it is meant to say that to make sure that you download the correct file for your device. as the file is named after your device. it does not mean to download the file to your phone.

and you can download the file into any folder that you want. for me i use the default download folder(windows 7/8)

and it does not matter where the file is located per se. you just need to know where to find it on your computer.

OK, well, THAT makes sense.

FWIW, I have a specific Android root folder on my PC's desktop to where I usually download this stuff, lest I forget where I put it.

Yup. I'm definitely using USB2.0, and I uninstalled HTC sync yesterday. Double-checked that (don't know why I even had it on the PC).

do you have fastboot enabled?

make sure that no programs that can interfere with the usb connection (pdanet or doubletwist ie)

do you have the sync drivers installed?

it does mention that it might work better on stock? if you are then you are good to go. some of the custom roms may interfere.

I'm still on the stock ROM. As far as the drivers installed, I'm pretty sure I have them, because I did need them to unlock, right? And I am unlocked.

Doing so as we speak...uh, type.

It looks like it's working, because it's currently going through the process, rebooting a whole bunch of times with the CMD window still up showing progress.

Keeping fingers crossed.

Well, I THINK it worked. However, now I have a weird problem--no SMS text capability. I can receive messages, but I cannot send any. At all. Both GoSMS and stick message app messages keep failing. Probably unrelated, but several reboots haven't fixed it.

Damn Jedi tricks!!!
