Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

Help; I cannot get the "Gscript.zip" from Megaupload. Any link I could access?

I just re-did the download from my phone w/o problem...did you enter the code it asked you to re-type? (also, you are usually forced to wait 45-60 seconds before the "regular" download button is available).

Thanks; It may related with my region, because it reply "This service is temporarily not available from your service area."
Any another link I could access?

Okay, I know this is stupid but I have to ask just to make sure I don't brick my phone. Better to be safe than sorry! I have the official 2.1 update plus the following updates. I have never rooted and It is completely stock with ota updates and everything done the official way and waiting. Now I want to root. Will this way work for the current legit OS on HTC droid Eris with Verizon?

how do i remove the custom booter? Verizon is sending me a refurb eris and i need to get the custom booter off of it. My trackball stopped working so they are giving me another eris. I searched but can't exactly find a solid answer.

I am in the rooting process. I don't want to flash a new ROM just yet, so I can just download engtools.zip from here: http://androidforums.com/1136379-post12.html, right? I have two more questions: 1) What is the differenc between engtool.zip and engtools3.zip and 2) is engtools.zip the stock ROM?

Thank you,
PC49

I think the engtools.zip is "engtools3.zip". Must be that jcase renamed or updated the file at some point in time (it was "engtools3.zip" by the time I downloaded it too).

The engtools3.zip file is just an file you can flash to get the su program and the Superuser.apk app (i.e., to give you root without needing to flash a custom ROM). Its not a ROM. You will need the custom recovery partition though in order to be able to flash the engtools3.zip.

I think you want this thread: http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/92096-verizons-ruu-official-2-1-droid-eris.html

Also, this post in that thread references taking you back to stock: http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-...uu-official-2-1-droid-eris-2.html#post1184655

This process works for any Android version and/or bootloader combination on the Eris.

So i followed these step exactly, and got to fig. 31, with the screen exactly as the figure. I power down, however I cannot get the phone to boot into recovery. I'm holding the volume up and end/power key at the same time, and the phone just boots up as normal. I've repeated the process, tried powering down several times, but no go. any ideas?

My eris is on 2.1, which i got from the official online source after the OTA update came out but was taking weeks to get to everyone

See if these replies fix you up:

Turn the phone off first then do vol up & power off/ end button.

You only press vol up & power buttons simultaneously with the phone already powered off, this will take you to recovery.

yeah i just had that problem...Power off your phone. then hold the up and down volume key as well as the end key down all at the same time. it will launch hboot. then from there you can select recovery.

SA,

Thank you very much. Using your tutorial and EU1's guide, I rooted successfully. Happy day for me! :) Now what... I believe there's a thread for that. ;)

I cannot for the life of me get the phone to boot up in recovery mode... I did everything the guide said to. Powered down after gscript1. Powered back up. Ran gscript2. Powered back down. Held down Volume UP + END button. But my phone just starts up as usual and doesn't take me to the recovery menu. what in the world?

SA,

Thank you again. It appears that I have to buy SetCPU from the Market if I haven't changed ROMs. Is there no free way with the stock ROM?

Well, I do think that members of XDA can download it free. You'd have to register; purchasing and/or donating is highly encouraged. Here's coolbho3000's thread for setCPU: SetCPU for Root Users [2.0.1] This *actually* changes everything. 07/05/2010 - xda-developers

Here's part of what the thread says: "The program is free here for XDA members. It costs 1.99 on the Android Market.".

This really is an amazing tool that the dev (coolbho3000) deserves credit and reward for (its probably the first or second thing folks use after rooting).

I was nervous to root my phone and install a new ROM, but this made it so simple to do! Thanks! Now, I'm happily running EvilEris.

Is there a "better" ROM? Or is EvilEris good for someone who just wants a smoother running phone? I am not terribly concerned with overclocking, etc. I mostly just want a smoother, quicker user experience. I don't like to hit a button and ...... wait and ..... wait for my phone to react.

There's lots and lots of ROMs out there. Which one is best is subjective (I prefer Ivan's Eris Official 1.0). You'll have to read through the forum threads for various discussions about the ROMs that folks have tried. You can also read/research on the XDA forums where the devs hang-out and host their main threads about each ROM: Droid Eris Android Development - xda-developers

Happy ROM hunting! :)
