Thanks man. Remember to take a break and get some rest to. the android community is lucky to have you

Thanks. I do this for fun, though. Compared to my job, this is restful. Going to try to theme the TouchWiz camera for the next release, maybe the gallery, too depending on the difficulty level.

EDIT: Camera is themed, working on Gallery, then MMS.

EDIT 2: Gallery themed (really, the only theming was the action bar on the main view). Working on MMS.

EDIT 3: MMS is slow going. Most AOSP MMS apps pull mmsc settings from apns_conf.xml (as far as I can tell). The problem with that is that our phone uses some kind of weird chameleon(?) settings to pass through the correct MMSC APN to the TouchWiz MMS app. Currently I'm trying to hard-code the MMSC into the MMS.APK through some smali edits.

EDIT 4: Partial success. I have MMS messages sending, but can't retrieve them. Still working on it.

EDIT 5: I give up for now. I may pick up the MMS hacking objective again later but for now, the Sprint chameleon settings have defeated me. Release 5.2 later today will include a themed Gallery, a holo-themed stock TouchWiz camera app, and a further modified TouchWiz MMS apk which completely disables its notifications.

So far this has been the best ROM I have used on this Cell..
However I do have one issue and its rather a major one when you come right down to it..

I use Link2SD..
Ever sense Ive istalled the ROM ive never been able to re-link apps..
Auto links and manual links work just fine..
Im just unable to "Relink All Application Files"..
Link2SD errors stating its not able to recieve ROOT..
Odd as ROOT is needed for the app to link to extSD witch it does..

Any suggestions?..
Keep up the great work OP..

P.S. The GoSMS url does work for MMS..
Just wanted the OP as well as others know that does work..
Maybe make that URL as a sticky for 3rd party SMS/MMS apps on the front page..

Glad the MMSC settings worked for you in GoSMS.

I don't use Link2SD, however, so I can't really guide you much on this one. If you haven't already, try going into SuperSU and make sure that Link2SD is actually granted permissions. Also, if you can capture a logcat and post it up, I'd be happy to take a look!

SSu is granted permissions towards Link2SD.
Doubtful but I was even thinking the kernel may be the issue (using Rads 1.5 as stock is to slow & the included kernel locks the cell)..
However I really doubt the other kernel I'm using is the issue but it was a thought..

Apps do link to ext4 portion manually as well as auto..
The issue I'm having is rather inrelivent as a quick uninstall/reinstall towards apps is all that's required.

Another issue is converting apps to system & back to user.. System conversation runs smooth.. Issue there is converting back to user..

Either way I'll try to getcha a logcat towards these issues..

Also as a suggestion an add on for a tethering app maybe helpful to other's, just a thought..

Other then that the ROM is truly fantastic..
Looking forward towards future updates.

I will likely include WiFi tether in the next release because I use it frequently enough. It could be the kernel causing link2sd to fail but, as you said, not likely.

I have not done a lot of converting apps to/from system but with a logcat I'll definitely be able to look into it. Thanks for your help!

Is there anyway to make the antenna signal stronger

Petition Sprint to put up new/stronger broadcast towers in your area. :-)

But -- sarcasm aside -- there is no way for me to increase signal strength in software. Signal strength is hardware (and occasionally firmware) related.

With that said, you can try updating your PRL. If there are new towers in your area, this should instruct your phone to use them and may result in a signal increase.

10/07/2013: R5.2
  • Holo-themed TouchWiz Camera and Gallery
  • Notifications permanently disabled in TouchWiz MMS (app is still installed/hidden)
  • WiFi Tether pre-installed and pre-configured
  • Implemented release number in About Phone under Build
--------------------------
I really want to get the "AOSP MMS" app working for the next release so I can remove 8sms and the TouchWiz messaging app so the next release might not be for a ways off until I can figure out the MMS authentication problem with retrieving. (Sending worked fine.) Barring some last minute bugs, this will probably be the last update before R6, which will likely be a full release only. There are some framework changes I want to make and a few more color/layout corrections, and possibly theme dialer and contacts. Thank you all for your patience and continued support, please let me know if you run into any bugs.

I've decided to give this ROM another spin. Turns out, the Google Play store was having issues at the same time I was trying out this ROM for the first time, making me think that the ROM was causing it. Now that I've tried it out, it works perfectly, and has all the features I'd want from an AOSP-like ROM.

Hahahaha. All that effort put into hacking smali in the MMS.apk and all it takes is a simple APN edit. Didn't really take that long at all, actually. Now on to theming...

EDIT: 5.2 may have a broken updater-script; looks like I forgot to include wifi tether and settings. Will fix...

EDIT 2: FIXED!

EDIT 3: New plan for R6. Fixed a few bugs in the AOSP theme for SystemUI and framework-res and removed SecMms.apk. I'm leaving 8sms in as it is essentially stock SMS, works in standalone mode now with the APN fix, is updated regularly, and doesn't require a bunch of framework2 and SecTelephonyProvider edits. Themed Dialer and Contacts, sadly, will not make it into this release, but there's always 6.1..... R6 testing in progress.

EDIT 4: Progress update on R6 - APN settings don't stick. This phone is very picky about the APNs and the changes made may have broken LTE so I'm reverting back to the stock apns-conf.xml. I may have another solution for stock MMS, however. Exploring that now

I personally am glad you switched this. The previous gallery would not let me set the AOSP Lockscreen Wallpaper for some reason. Subtle, but important improvements! Kudos!

Thanks. Sometimes there are obvious bugs, and other times there are bugs that don't show up for a few days (I don't change my lockscreen wallpaper often but I hate that dandelion wallpaper).

Next bug to squash is the slideshow. When I removed the TouchWiz gallery, I also removed the apk that enables slideshow. I'll be restoring that in R6.

R6 Progress update: APN settings are now sticking after a build.prop edit. Thanks to MopedRyder's thread here. This may break LTE, but I don't have LTE where I live and only occasionally at work in the parking lot at midnight so I can't test. When I'm satisfied that R6 is stable, I'll release it and rely on you all to let me know what it breaks. Hopefully nothing. Progress is slow but moving.

I just noticed that Google Chrome is pre-installed on this ROM. I deleted it because I think it's one of the worst browsers out there. Plus it uses up a whopping 54mb of storage space. Not sure how popular this browser is with others, but if it were up do me I would eliminate it.

Boat Browser uses only 11mb of space and works great. FWIW. Not a complaint, just a comment :o

I like Chrome. It synchronizes my bookmarks and passwords across my desktop, laptop, tablet, and phone.

That said, I remember using Boat Browser on my Motorola Triumph until they finally got ICS working on it. Boat is definitely a nice browser if you're looking for a minimalistic approach.

Chrome will stay in the ROM as pre-installed. I might release an add-on Zip that removes some extra stuff from the preinstall after R6. Is there anything else that we'd like to see removed by default?

I understand it's advantages, and I would hold off on doing anything with it. There might be many more that like it and use it, I can always delete it. Sad thing is you said it was pre-installed in the change log and I had missed that .

It's also in the feature list of the OP but we won't hold that against you. I think I'm going to make a zip for R6 that can be flashed to remove some of the apps that I have preinstalled. R6 testing is going well, by the way, just have to address a couple of missing libs and settings permissions and it should be ready for general consumption. I could, however, wait until I get the dialer and contacts themed. What do you all think? Release as is or wait for themed dialer and/or contacts?

I don't know if this is a bug with the rom or if it is a bug with my phone. But I tried to install an app earlier and I get some errors. I either get the ones that are in the screenshots below or I would get something like the purchase could not be processed even on a free app.

This is actually an issue with the Play Store. Everything I've found online says there is no real fix but a workaround is to remove your Google account and then re-enter it.
