Root [Virgin Mobile] [VMOBI][ROM][KERNEL] Victorious ROM + VaeVictus OC kernel (Updated 7-30-13)

Just installed the update. For some reason i no longer have root access. Did i do something wrong? I have twrp. It worked on the last release.
EDIT: fixed root permissions by just reflashing. Great improvements. One issue... Swiftkey language packs wont load on boot. Not sure if this is a rom problem or a swiftkey problem. Thanks for the great rom anyway!

I use SwiftKey with no issue. Uninstall and reinstall should fix. I had same issue and I think it's due to the internal and external sdcards being swapped.

For some reason I still always have to reinstall the language pack after every boot. This never happened before I flashed victorious. It's not that big of a deal because 99 percent of the time I have 3g to download it.

Hmm I'm not having that issue. I wonder if it might be an issue with the storage swap. I removed the script on my phone. Let me do a bit of testing once I get home later

I'll see if I can figure out the issue with the language packs. For now, I would back up with Titanium Backup and then restore from it when issues arise.

OK it is an issue with the storage script. Without it my SwiftKey works fine, with it SwiftKey gives language pack loading error at every boot.

Wonder if SwiftKey tries to load language packs before or during the sd cards being swapped

Love the rom Jerry! it's been working like a charm ;] unfortunately, for whatever reason I can no longer use s-voice (well, the double-tap on the home button doesnt work anyway). Has anyone else had this issue?

SwiftKey- If you installed it before using Victorious (or the swap script), you will need to uninstall it without the swap script, then put the swap script back in, then re-install it.

Bloatware- I removed just about everything from Sprint, Samsung, and VirginMobile. In the next release, I'll be adding several apks back in order to try to make updates (at least PRL) possible without having to flash back to stock.

Ok if anyone wants to restore the Self Service Agent so you can update Prl and Data Profile on Victorious Rom it's just a matter of putting these 2 files back into /system/app.

SprintDM.apk - http://db.tt/3F0NTWoN

SprintSyncMLSvc.apk - http://db.tt/XgZJEqtz

Download the files, copy over to /system/app, set permission to match other system apps, reboot and you should be in business.

* You will go back to getting the "Preparing Network" notification whenever you change between 3g and 4g

Thank doG. I can finally activate my Victory. (I went a little nuts with TiBackup before I activated and broke SCRMP, then factory reset when it wouldnt activate, hoping it would fix the system apps).

I had backups, but twrp 2.5 is a jerk.

You are a gentleman and a scholar.

hey guys just asking for your opinions would this method http://androidforums.com/virgin-mob...2-apps-sd-other-space-saving-awesomeness.html be more efficient than the swap created with this rom or does the swap method cover all the things this does ?

See this post:
Apps2Sd Experiment

I then went and ordered an SDCard, note I did not say I then went and ordered a micro-SDCard! <facepalm>
My new MICRO-SDCard should be here today or tomorrow, then I can continue testing.
Anyone need a new SDCard? (non-micro of course) ;)

Cool i just installed the real racing 3 almost 2 gig install and it put the install on the sd card which it thinks is the internal so your rom is doing exactly what i wanted being hopeful on your project. i like to play big games so keep us posted and thanks again for all you do loving this phone because of your hard work.

Thanks to kwknott for finding the necessary apks and testing!

Great stuff, definitely helping in my phone to feel like stock Android. Though I seem to have an issue: wifi tether never asks for SU permission, and just crashes when I try to activate it. Any idea?

edit: also another minor issue, but the boot screen looks completely messed up. I get the Sprint logo, then two garbled Android logos side by side. The ROM works completely fine otherwise.

edit2: anyone know if it's safe to do a boot-time password encrypt on the device, and retain the ability to flash ROM updates?

I have Victorious-0.1.2 installed with Link2SD and some symbolic links set up. If I update do I need to uninstall these apps first beforehand or can I just update over my setup?

And is there a way to get the original stock Samsung boot animation back? I don't care for the Virgin Mobile one, but I kinda liked the Samsung one.

If you had wifi tether installed before, then your probably having data/cache issues. Try clearing data in app management, then clear dalvik-cache (either with TitaniumBackup or in recovery). Reboot and see if it will work. IF not, uninstall it and then download this apk and install it:
WifiTether_TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012.apk

I don't know about the boot-time password encryption, I haven't tried it, it could require the stock recovery. Do a backup in recovery, then test it out. If it messes things up, boot into recovery and restore your backup. Be sure to use TWRP, it appears as if CWM for the Victory has issues with the data partition, can't ever seem to restore the data backups.

That depends. So long as the apps you linked are in /data they will retain their links. If you linked anything in /system, you will most likely have to remove those system links and then relink them. Follow these steps if you have any issues:

  1. When in the main Links2Sd interface:
  2. press menu and then multi-select and then select all,
  3. unlink everything,
  4. then press filter and choose movable,
  5. then press menu and multi-select, then select all,
  6. then create links for everything.
Takes about a minute and a half to be sure all is well. Subsequent reboots should not cause any issues.

You can get the stock Samsung bootanimations back by placing the original two files (bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg) in /system/media overwriting the ones currently there, and setting their permissions the same as other files in that directory. You can download the stock bootanimation files from the bottom of the first post in this thread:

First of all, I'm a bit late to the party, but definitely want to make sure I thank everyone who made this possible, very cool to be able to install this and have it working so well.

I did have a few issues (missing the calendar widget!), most of them minor, and these are mostly words of warning and suggestions to anyone trying this out!
First for people installing this, TWRP might ask you to restore root permissions after the zip is flashed, DON'T DO IT. I did the first time and got stuck at the boot logo, so had to restore my backup! It probably said this to me because I had moved my superuser into the system partition. I am assuming that you should move your superuser app to the regular data partition before installing Victorious or its updates, because it is changing the system partition! I just reflashed my root zip and busybox, reinstalled from google play as well for some reason and then it all worked, so no biggie!
Second, Don't activate if you don't have to! I was actually trying to test updating the PRL and it didn't seem to work from the menu, so like an idiot I typed in the code provided in the post, not really thinking about it (its the clear activation and reboot initiating activation code!)... So i lost my activation at this point and it wouldn't activate.
So I just restored my backup and reflashed the zip again... Since my phone didn't lose activation when I flashed the zip originally. Word to the wise don't do this when you are super tired! Well, it's sort of fixed, my phone is activated now and getting a proper data connection ect, BUT it's still bringing up the dialog to activate! UGH! :( Just ignoring it for now, maybe someone can help me with this, since it wont go away from my notification bar and I can't update PRL at all because even if I type ##UPDATE# it just brings up the activation, same thing if I go through the menu.

I also noticed that there are two camera apps now. The new one looks cooler so far, no complaints, just thought I'd mention it. I think thats everything, I will report back after I test more.

To reiterate, @JerryScript, the calendar app is there but the widget is gone. And I can't get rid of the prompt/notification telling me to activate even though it's already activated and working fine (even after flashing my backup).

Update: my activation is messed up, I have internet access (4g), but can't do texts or calls. Anyone have an idea how I can fix it without calling tech support? I'm probably going to restore, and try activating on my stock backup. Then reflash. I'm also not sure if I was truly activated after flashing victorious since the internet was the only thing I tested before and that is still working even now. hmmm..

Update 2: Got it! I had an idea, since I had been having trouble doing mms with 4g mode prior to all this, I figured, maybe its not activating properly in LTE/CDMA mode... so I switched it to CDMA only, and walla... all better. Now I switched back and it seems to be working

Update 3: the stock messaging app is letting me send MMS on 4g now. I'm pretty sure it's Victorious, cause its just that awesome. GoSMS app isn't letting me send them like I can on CDMA only mode, so I will prolly just stop using it. Thanks JerryScript! Looks like another of my problems are fixed! You ROCK!

Sorry to hear you had issue with TWRP resetting SU. I always let it "fix" the problem, and it just reboots right away no worries. So long as it works, rock on!

I hadn't noticed the calendar widget was gone, I'll check and see what needs to be added back to make it work in the next release. I'll try to post whichever apk it is before then (if kwknott doesn't beat me to it :p)

Both kwknott and myself have successfully updated the PRL, Profile, and Samsung Firmware from the settings menu with this 0.1.4 release (tested before uploading, and then had kwknott test before I posted the link). I attempted the activation from the settings menu, but my phone is already activated, so it just said to call VMUCare, kwknott tested activation via the phone number, and upon reboot it went through the automatic activation steps. Not sure what happened with your attempts, wish I had a logcat of when it happened.

(I like to repost the following in cases like this, logcats are the window to your phone!)
Note - Steps to logcat:

  1. Open terminal and type these two lines (press <enter> don't type it):
  2. su <enter>
  3. logcat > /sdcard/logcat.txt <enter>
  4. Press home key
  5. At the homescreen long-press the home key and swipe away the terminal
  6. Copy contents of /sdcard/logcat.txt to pastebin.com
  7. Post the pastebin url here for us to check out

Thanks again for all your help! I've been super busy with work lately, but I will be on here more often and am always trying to keep up with and test new things. I teach computer certs, so it kinda goes with the territory that I love to explore new tech and apps.

One more thing also, I just noticed that gtalk is gone as well. I can install it back myself as I have everything backed up already, but just thought I would mention it. Gtalk was updated to hangouts and having it as a system app has protected it from being updated and lost. I use gtalk at work to communicate with staff when I am teaching or out of the office.

Thanks again for everything. I am glad to post the logcats if they are still of any use... maybe if I get some free time I will break my phone activation again and record it for you if I have to! lol.. I'm sure it can wait for the next update though :)

I removed as much as I could to try to extend battery life and storage, including anything that can be downloaded from the market. Rather than have a system directory full of apps some may not want, I figure it's better to give people the choice of downloading what they want. The alternative is probably better, having people freeze/uninstall what they don't want with TitaniumBackup, but that also entails larger downloads for Victorious, something I try to avoid. ;)

BTW- You can use TitaniumBackup to remove Gtalk from the market links, that should prevent auto updates. You can also grab Gtalk's apk from the stock deodexed zip I posted in another thread, push it to /system/app and set it's permissions to the same as the other apks in there, and then reboot. Should continue to function as a system app that way, just be sure to uninstall any updates (ie the hangout one) before you do this.

I went ahead and tried the activation again and everything went thru without any issues.

I wonder if you have spotty service that could have messed up activation.
