VZE Froyo 2.2.2 Update Discussion Thread

Damn guys! sorry! It is legit. No this isnt needed til around may 2nd. Just because the update will go live on the 2nd doesnt mean you will get it on the 2nd. This includes SMS fixes and a few other misc fixes. nothing important really. WE NEED THE OTA ZIP so please email me at deatheatergrim (at) gmail (dot) com when you get the notification. should be in /cache or on root of sdcard

And please only email if you are experienced. MUST BE ROOTED. so i would prefer and email from swc2001/dautley/tigersfan1

2.1 even needed a special app. but it was tied in with the settings.apk. The 2.1 update app was SystemUpdater.apk. but it was hidden and tied in directly with the settings app.

THIS IS LEGIT

Ya am i gonna need to go back to stock or do you think the app will let me get the update even if i am rooted

I got the same message too. And like you I feel it is probably some sort of attempt to plant malware on our phones. As with emails of this caliber, always best to be skeptical. But it bugs me that they have access, unless the simply 'auto-dialed' a whole block of cell numbers, against which there is nothing one can do. I'll try to find the other dialog about it and post a link here.

Here's a discussion about it in the All Things Rooted section. I'm skeptical so will wait and see if something more 'official' comes from Verizon. If this is legitimate, it sure smells of a back door malware approach!

Got a system dump of the VZE update last night, this isnt anything to get exited about.

I will work on incorporating some of these changes into velocity. I do not recommend updating to this, unless you like stock.

Wondering if GingerBreak will work on it?

This is not ginegerbread. And I repeat:
This is not gingerbread/GB/2.3/HoneyComb/3.0 or really ANYTHING to get exited about

As far as rooting it; getting rooted is easy. If applied with the updater utility to retain recovery. IDK about fastboot my tester was to much a noob to verify

No, is not gingerbread but I've been reading that Android Froyo 2.2.2 is known to break root exploits like RATC and psneuter. if it comes to the Ally over OTA (or update app) and RATC/psneuter fails to work, Ally users may be able to use the new GingerBreak exploit which has been known to work on other LG devices running 2.2. such as the Optimus.

Exactly...

It looks like no one will be totally lost. If you use the LG Updater you retain recovery, so you can just flash a nandroid or rom to get root back, and the OTA will not break fastboot, so either case there will be a way back. Unfortunately they are not giving us much its like a 12mb update, so going thru all the trouble to see it is disappointing, there are no visible changes.

Thanks!

It doesn't sound very compelling, though. I wonder why all the hoops to get it installed? Seems like they could just push whatever it is to us. I wonder if the download required to get the update 'temporarily roots' an unrooted phone?

LG forgot to include the app in the 2.2.1 update. If you look at stock 2.1 ZV6-ZVC theres an apk labeled softwareupdater.apk its tied in with the system updates in settings.apk. However. LG forgot this app with 2.2.1 and didnt get it tied in to the settings app as they have done in previous versions. this is why this app is needed

Is this something we can get while we are running Velocity? Or would we need to go back to stock to get it, and then re-load Velocity?

The Velocity team has already peeked into the update package, gleaned what they deemed beneficial, and packaged it into Velocity 1.1. You don't need to download the app to get to Velocity 1.1, and you'll be able to flash 1.1 over 1.0, skipping this particular update entirely.

The great difference between our devs and that "fruit" from Cupertino, is that our devs really DO know "what we need and what we want". :D

What do you mean, the link was no good? It brought me to the Upgrade Utility for Ally in Market. You can even do a search in the Market to find it.
i click it and i get "the requested item could not be found." if i search for it i get nothing, i must have a broken version of market on my brand newly refurb asurion phone:( (i hate asurion)

I got the message but it looked like it was from an actual phone number not verizon and it sounded fake so I figured it was spam and the app would be spyware or something.

I'm rooted and used the Lg updater to update my phone last night May 2. I'm at version 2.2.2 Baseband vs740mve.6040.1001 kernel 2.6.32.9 lg-electronics@aloha #2 Build number frg83g SW vs740zve

After what seemed an eternity (I was at a hotel using Wi-Fi on my laptop) the update went through and finished. I wasn't rooted anymore, no superuser on phone, so I just used superoneclick again. It did not take the first time so just ran it again (which I had to run it twice before to root this phone) which took. I don't see any improvements and all I know it did was to re-install the bloatware I had removed. I just used Titanium to remove them again. So far no problems and works just like before. If anyone knows what improvements they actually put in there please list them, inquiring minds want to know.....lol
