What the heck is the deal with iphone users Vs Android users

Simple statistics rolling off your assumption that possibly 5% of users were having the reception issue.

Allowing for some overlap, that would bring the total up to 20% or more having a significant issue with their iPhone.

As far as how many are truly having the issue... we don't know. We will Never know, because Apple will NEVER release any statistics for this problem.

I never assumed that it was 5%, I was merely using that number as an example to illustrate that the whole reception issue with the Iphone 4 could be an overblown issue by the loudest and most disgruntled customers, who would naturally be expecting their over hyped new toy to be absolutely flawless.

There is no evidence whatsoever to indicate that 20% of Iphone 4 users are experiencing significant problems (or any problems at all), as a matter of fact, there is no evidence to indicate that even 1% of Iphone 4 users are experiencing any problems.

This is what we know: Some people are experiencing reception issues. That's it.

All cellphone brands will have the occasional lemon, and even if Apple produced 1 lemon per 100 Iphone 4s, that number would still be well over 17,000 bad phones, which would of course result in a lot of disgruntled customers running to the media and technology blogs, which would make the problem look much bigger than it actually is.

For instance, if the media and technology blogs reported on some of the problems droid users are experiencing in these forums, people would incorrectly assume that the droid is a piece of crap due to all the complaints, issues, and problems posted here. But the reality is that only a small percentage of droid users actually experience any problems, same thing with Apple Iphone 4 users.

Lets list the areas the Evo owns the iPhone in shall we?

1. Evo is faster to load websites over 3G and wifi, even without Froyo
~Evidence to a credible source? (not a biased youtube video)
2. Evo has Flash
~Flash is an unnecessary battery drain on a smartphone. My Iphone 4 can view 99.99% of the same websites the Evo can.
3. Evo can multitask any app, not just apps your daddy Steve Jobs approves
~Iphone 4 has more fluid multitasking abilities, without the unnecessary battery drain that the Evo has due to the poor programming in this area
4. Evo has built in Google maps with navigation
~Not a plus, as I don't actually need or would use this pointless feature
5. Evo has speech to text in any field you can type
~Not a plus, as I don't actually need or would use this pointless feature
6. Evo has a bigger screen
~Evo has a bigger screen at the cost of a poorer resolution, and the larger screen is also an additional unnecessary battery drain.
7. Evo can actually make calls being held any way you like
~I can hold my Iphone 4 any way I'd like without any reception issues or dropped calls. I have zero problems with my Iphone 4.
8. Evo auto formats text in the web browser
~Pointless, unnecessary novelty.
9. Evo has HDMI out
~Pointless, unnecessary novelty.
10. Evo has an open OS with customizable widgets
~Pointless, unnecessary novelty.
11. Evo can do video calls over 3G/4G
~4G is another unnecessary novelty right now, it's spotty and unreliable, a horrendous battery drain, and only available in a select few areas nationwide. On top of that, Evo's video calling is atrociously difficult to use and set up.
12. Evo can use custom keyboards, dialers and interfaces
~Another pointless unnecessary novelty, imo.

These are just off the top of my head, I am sure there are another dozen things the Evo does better than your iPhone 4.

And to reiterate, I am by no means an apple fanboy. I've never owned an ipod, ipad, or mac, nor do I ever plan to. But I do like their phones, and I've never had a problem with mine. I criticized Apple's recent press release on these forums, so I will call them on a legitimate grief if one presents itself, but I'm not drinking the koolaid that "MY PHONE IS BETTER THAN URS" argument, we can go back and forth endlessly.

It comes down to preference. Evo is not better than the Iphone 4, and the Iphone 4 is not better than the Evo.

...It comes down to preference. Evo is not better than the Iphone 4, and the Iphone 4 is not better than the Evo.

It certainly does, and yet you participate in a feature discourse above with a dismissive and belittling attitude. People choose the feature sets that best blend with their needs and options at the time. I would disagree with some of the features you find unnecessary and agree with others, however I would never call them a pointless novelty. That is juvenile and "trollish" behavior. You owe mbell75 an apology.

I'm not drinking the koolaid that "MY PHONE IS BETTER THAN URS" argument, we can go back and forth endlessly.

I will actually agree with you on this. The long standing my ______ is better than your ______ arguments don't go anywhere. What a person chooses to use and why they use it is completely based on that individuals needs and/or wants.

I am not an Apple fan and probably never will be. There was a joke on the forum at one point that the day I bought an iPhone would be the day I posted nude photos of myself on the forum (an obvious sign that I had lost my mind). This is not to say that I think the iPhone is a bad device. I actually don't, but my dislike of At&t (many bad experiences when I was a customer) and Apple as a company would never allow me to purchase the device. I appreciate the iPhone for all that it has provided in the way of advancement and the way it has forced companies to step up their development of new products. The innovations that have come from the competition Apple and the iPhone provide are great. I also appreciate Apples marketing and advertising departments. What they have done is truly amazing.

All that said, the problems that I have with Apple in general are probably too numerous to get into much detail here without writing a good sized novel on the subject (members here will tell you that I can drop a book in a post pretty easily). To be brief, Apple offers a very closed and controlling system with their products. The restrictions that they place and the choke hold they have on their customers from those restrictions are absurd. While I don't expect or demand that everything be opensource (no problems with capitalism on my end) I do expect that after I buy a product it should be mine. This means that nobody should be able to tell me where to shop for music, movies or software. It makes me think of buying a car and suddenly I can only have it serviced at the dealership or purchase gas at specified stations. Then I am only allowed to listen to the specific type of music that the manufacturer allows based on the make and model I purchased. Any bumper stickers I choose to add, must be dealer or manufacturer approved before they can be applied. Obviously, this would just be crazy if it happened and that particular car company would have difficulty staying in business for long. However, people are willing to do it with the iPhone or iPad all day long.

I noticed that you pointed to widgets as "Pointless, unnecessary novelty". Not sure if you have ever used a widget on a device before or if you even really understand what it is or does. I will assure you they are none of the three things that you called them. As a matter of fact, many of your comments to mbell75's post sound more like regurgitated Steve Jobs comments than your actual opinion.

Funny how iPhone users can only cling to screen res and camera arguments, cause thats all their phone does slightly better. Too bad the rest of the PHONE, you know, the important stuff like ability to make calls and wifi signal are a joke. The iPhone just barely came out with things like MMS and copy/paste last year and multitasking a month ago. Things other phones have been doing for 5-6 years, what a joke. Lets list the areas the Evo owns the iPhone in shall we? Will be a much longer list than yours :)

1. Evo is faster to load websites over 3G and wifi, even without Froyo
LoL because every video on YouTube must be biased, you know every single one, even those submitted from various parts of the world you know what they all must have colluded via IRC to launch this hate campaign.
2. Evo has Flash
Thanks to this Evo users don't have to pay out the nose for games that can be played for free on websites :D
3. Evo can multitask any app, not just apps your daddy Steve Jobs approves
Not as fluid? Give me a break, you can have as many running with quick switching via the home key for 6 of the most recently used. How much more fluid do you need? What about battery drain please show me a link to evidence that the EVO suffers major drainage of the battery due to poor programming using top rated and well known brand apps? Any draining is caused by amateur devs nothing to do with Android/HTC..
4. Evo has built in Google maps with navigation
Not pointless as this saves forking out for a tomtom or other standalone device at the cost of another $100min for a decent unit.
5. Evo has speech to text in any field you can type
Not pointless at all and I imagine is a great boon for many people with disabilities who now don't need to type a great deal with minor editing.
6. Evo has a bigger screen
I will agree not a great big deal but I challenge anyone to notice any real difference in display quality between one or the other using their eyes alone.
7. Evo can actually make calls being held any way you like
Apple admitted some of their units suffer issues but I would request you find similar issues and provide me a link to support the claim that the EVO also has problems even by a small loud minority as you say the iPhone sufferers are.
8. Evo auto formats text in the web browser
Pointless maybe but can the iPhone do it?? Pointless is a point of view and opinion others may find it useful say like Web Devs if thats how they want their sites to appear on mobile devices.
9. Evo has HDMI out
Brilliant addition in my opinion as its the one thing I miss on my desire coming from an N95 with TV OUT. I enjoy capturing moments with my children and save lugging around DVD's/Camcorders etc I could just plug the phone in to show their Grandparents what they were up to like first words etc. Your opinion is self serving and not understanding of the broad range of needs customers have. Apple have failed to cater to every market.
10. Evo has an open OS with customizable widgets
Tell the entire dev community that its pointless. Please I look forward to seeing your views about this posted up on XDA.
11. Evo can do video calls over 3G/4G
The point was referring to video calls not 4G's merits. Video calling like this is great and often used at festivals and gigs to mention one scenario where my brother and I have often video called each other to share moments that we fell each other would appreciate. Not on the EVO I admit but the principal still applies.
12. Evo can use custom keyboards, dialers and interfaces
Again your opinion is contextually based as thanks to the custom keyboards, diallers and interfaces it makes the Android platform easier to customise for various user needs inclusive of those in the disabled community as I have mentioned previously.

These are just off the top of my head, I am sure there are another dozen things the Evo does better than your iPhone 4.

Another take on breaking down the above post.

... you can have as many running with quick switching via the home key for 6 of the most recently used.

8 with FroYo.

lol google maps and google nav pointless? what world are you living on where free reliable satnav on your smartphone is pointless....i bet its shaped like a half eaten fruit ;)

so Alieno your basically saying everything android/android handsets can do that your magical revolutionary iPhone 4 cant is pointless? Green eye'ed monster showing its nasty side here i feel.

While apples interface is slightly smoother than androids its no where near as flexable to your personal needs.

Apple is not an innovative company, everything they do is massivly conservative and behind the curve of tech development to save their prized user experience, which due to the horrible form factors and eurgonmics of the iPhone 4 has completly lost the plot as well.

Two questions ... Where do I mail the iPhone I'm going to buy for you and in which forum should I look for the pictures? ;)

LOL

If I remember correctly, the terms were actually for multiple pictures of me with my girlfriend and that I had to buy the iPhone and actually use it. Since those 2 things are probably NEVER going to happen you will be searching for a while. If the day actually does come though, I will keep my promise and post them in my profile first, then probably in the lounge. :D

This is what we know: Some people are experiencing reception issues. That's it.

Hate to correct you, but there are a few other things that we DO know:

Some people are experiencing a yellow screen problem.

Some people are experiencing dead pixels.

i kinda doubt that :p

Well, as much as I don't like Apple... I actually do feel bad for the people who don't know anything about phones, and bought the iPhone because they thought it was the best.

Those people who really are victims of Apple's marketing. Those that now have phones that have serious problems (i.e. yellow picture problem, et. al). These problems will likely never be recognized by Apple publicly, which means they are stuck with what they bought.

That being said, I'm actually enjoying watching Apple respond to these customers, and them get upset. I feel like yelling... "Now you see why treating your customers like this is a bad thing... about time!"

But that's just me.

What percentage of Iphone 4 users are experiencing these issues?

We can find people have problems with any phone, for instance:

Some people are experiencing unresponsive broken screens with the HTC EVO

Some people are experiencing reception issues with Droid

Some people are experiencing video calling problems with the Evo

Some people are experiencing a bad terrible battery life from Droid

ect ect ect

Down the line we go, we can play this game all day.

But at the end of the day, we don't know what percentage of Droid users are experiencing the above problems. If those issues and droid complaints were being regurgitated on the media 24/7 and being hashed and rehashed on the technology blogs day after day, it would appear as though Droid phones are buggy worthless pieces of garbage. But Droid has the luxury of not enduring that kind of sensational coverage because, well, unfortunately the demand just isn't there for Droid. In two months time Verizon will be offering 'buy one get one free' deals, meanwhile in two months time you'll be lucky if you can even find an Apple retailer that has an Iphone 4 in stock.

Apple is receiving all this coverage because of the obscene demand for the product, but at the same time all that coverage is giving a false perception that the Iphone 4 issues are more widespread than they really are.

Again, I ask, what percentage of Iphone 4 users are experiencing the problems you highlighted above? None of us know the answer to that, but if you want to play this game and triumphantly seize some of the reported issues with the Iphone 4 and pretend as if they're a widespread problem affecting a large quantity of Iphone 4 users, then we must also do the same for Droid, it's problems, and it's users.

Well, as much as I don't like Apple... I actually do feel bad for the people who don't know anything about phones, and bought the iPhone because they thought it was the best.

He must be one of those guys who must not care about any options or added features on all his devices then. I dont care if my TV is only 720p and 60Mhz, its STILL HD! Who needs 1080 and 240Mhz displays? They are a pointless novelty! LMAO.

How are you not banned yet? All you are doing is trashing Android phones and OS on an ANDROID forum! You add nothing useful or insightful, all while touting your iPhone. You are the VERY definition of a troll. Are the mods asleep?

The whole purpose of my post you quoted was for me to illustrate that the exact same arguments being used against the Iphone 4 can also be leveled against a Droid phone (or any phone for that matter).

That the whole Iphone vs Droid argument is a petty make-believe-battle and that both phones have their advantages and disadvantages, and that in the end it comes down to what the consumer's own preferences.

You're right though....that guy is a troll. He's only here to start fights...either that or he's trying to convince himself that he's not made a big mistake that he's stuck with for the next 2 years :D

See above, because it applies to you as well.

It's obvious at this point that those of you erroneously referring to me as a troll are only doing so because you haven't actually read my posts, and after stumbling into this thread just can't resist to knock me for being an Iphone 4 user.

I already said that the personal attacks simply degrade the discussion to a level beneath this community, and I stand by it. If some of you are incapable of controlling yourselves in a public forum..then perhaps you should do what other forum members have already done, and just privately send me the nasty messages riddled with personal & racist (odd..yes..I know) insults. (*Note, I will simply delete any future PMs and not reply, as I have been doing).

But as for this thread, let's try to keep the discussion on target and free of the personal insults and mindlessly inaccurate labels.

5. Evo has speech to text in any field you can type
-Not pointless at all and I imagine is a great boon for many people with disabilities who now don't need to type a great deal with minor editing.

i'll speak up here as a person with a disability. had me a stroke at the ripe tender age of 27. it was a DOOZY!! knocked my whole right (dominate) side back to zero.

had a blackberry pearl and used it 1 handed. went to the blackberry storm (we all know what a nightmare those turned out to be). then came a Moto Droid.

while i initially wanted the keyboard to force me to use my right hand, there are surely times where i go 1 handed.

voice to text is HEAVEN for me. i should be using the keyboard as much as possible to help retrain pathways that my brain lost, but sometimes i simply cannot.

please have the common courtesy to NOT ASSume that voice to text doesn't benefit me (as a minority of cell phone users).

sorry for the punctuation errors end lack of capitalization

That the whole Iphone vs Droid argument is a petty make-believe-battle and that both phones have their advantages and disadvantages, and that in the end it comes down to what the consumer's own preferences.

and herein lies the problem - at the end of the day it's down to personal preferences wether a fiat 126 or a ferrari 430 (*) is the better car for you, but there are certain aspects that can be viewed quite objectively and regarded as positive/negative in a general consensus

the reason why people consider you and others like you mindless apple fanboys is that you refuse to accept any of those objective points
the ferrari accelerates much faster than the fiat and the general public would say that makes the ferrari more desirable than the fiat
you say it's a pointless novelty (or as the youtube video popularized "i don't care")

i realize of course that there are fandroids who do the exact same thing, only it seems to me (i'm biased of course) that happens to a far lesser extent (partly because there are so few objectively superior things about the iphone)

(*) i'm exaggerating with the comparison to make the point, not correlating any gap of quality between phones

Are the mods asleep?

I can assure you that the mods are paying VERY close attention to this thread, and if/when action is required it will be taken. Until then, please leave moderation to the staff.

@ ALL:
Please stop chucking the t-word around as a petty insult. Read back through this thread.... the words "pot", "kettle" and "black" spring to mind. ;)

The OP asked the question in a respectful manner. I have no respect for someone who joins this community for the sole purpose of evangelizing a product that has a tenuous connection to this site at best. It is beyond illogical to join the discussion with an attack as has been done here. Walking in and claiming "You people are lying about the iPhone, you suck" and then wondering "Why is everyone so mean to me?"

Hiding behind the "I am here to clean things up" statement is the not the weakest explanation ever, but it's pretty sad. That kind of discourse will never garner the level of respect Toasty, our OP has. I disagree with the behavior of someone who introduces himself with an attack.

Irrational people try to claim that it is a personal attack to express your disagreement with such behavior. They also favor using "it's my preferred product and you just have to deal with it" to defend their bad behavior and it shows that no real effort to be part of the community is being made. To claim that disaproval of bad behavior and the perpetrator of such is a disgrace to this community only flaunts the blatant disrespect.

So, you couldn't find a single phone with this many serious issues, and had to compile a list of serious issues from several different droid phones? I gotta say, that seems a little deceitful.

I find it hilarious though, that you couldn't find a single phone with as many serious issues as the iPhone 4 has.

Actually, the reason it isn't is because of headlines like these

HTC EVO 4G Updates: HTC EVO 4G Screen an' Touch Problems to be Fixed by HTC - WIRELESS AND MOBILE NEWS

These would have been non-issues if Apple had offered to fix them.

Apple is receiving all this coverage because of the obscene demand for the product, but at the same time all that coverage is giving a false perception that the Iphone 4 issues are more widespread than they really are.

Actually, Apple is receiving this kind of coverage because of statements like "Don't hold it that way". If Apple had attempted to remedy the problem, we wouldn't hear any more about it... like HTC did above with the EVO Screen issues.

Ok, the problems that have been resolved by HTC, versus the ones that Apple refuses to fix. Let's make a good comparison.

How many people still have these problems with their droid? After HTC has fixed these issues? And how many will continue to have the reception problem with their iPhone 4, when the iPhone 5 comes out?

Well, as much as I don't like Droid... I actually do feel bad for the people who don't know anything about phones, and bought a Droid because they thought it was the best.

Those people who really are victims of Droid's marketing. Those that now have phones that have serious problems (i.e. dead screens, battery problems, et. al). These problems will likely never be recognized by Droid publicly, which means they are stuck with what they bought.

See! I can do it too!

Yeah, but at least HTC and Motorola will fix/have fixed these problems when they were brought to the manufacturer's attention.

The problem here is... you are comparing a company that fixes the issues, with one that just tells you to hold the phone in a different way.
