What will you upgrade to next?

First, I will never be Eris-less. I plan to continue using the Eris as a phone when I need something smaller and it will probably remain a dedicated music and book player for me. It is and always will be a great little device. My girl also still has her Eris so until she changes I can't be Eris-less.;)

As for the Fascinate it is really nice, HUGE, but really nice. With its specs it's obviously faster and it has a lot more memory. I reloaded all the apps I had on my Eris and still have over 60% of my memory left. The screen is nothing short of stunning and I am having trouble charging it because I can't stop playing (little kid with a new toy and all that) with it.

For anyone that loves their Eris, is no longer attached to Sense, wouldn't mind going bigger and has an upgrade the Fascinate is a really good choice. IMHO, of course.

Did you get the Fascinate at the end of your contract or what???

I rooted the device, then unrooted, so that I'd know what I was talking about when responding to posted questions about those things in the Fascinate forums.

It also was a remarkable coincidence, as I unrooted within hours of an update coming OTA that I did not know about. There are mixed reports of rooted Fascinates accepting the OTA.

All of the reasons that caused me to move away from the X, my first choice as I entered the Verizon store, and to this device were also in play as I unrooted; there is no reason for me to root the device beyond removing Blockbuster and the many other kiddie apps. As it is, they can be hidden via menu selections.

Very bright, clear display. Larger screen. Fast, fast, fast. ;) Reliable, solid animal.

My Eris has always been the same, quality wise, so I had high expectations when I decided on the Fascinate. The X seemed lesser in looks, handling and quickness as I went back and forth in the store.

If BB evers does another FPF with the SF I don't know if I'll be able to pass on it, again. I've done my homework and really think I'd be happy with it. Do you think you'll be rooting when ROM's start rolling out for the SF? My main reason for rooting it would be to remove bloat and get wireless tether and other root apps. I've seen A LOT of hate about Bing but I don't think it will bother me that much. When you did have it rooted did you play around with setCPU to U/C or O/C it just to see how it affected your battery? How is the battery on it, have seen mixed reviews

The questions about the O/C isn't neccessarly just for Frisco, anyone who has played around with setCPU on the SF is encouraged to share what you found with battery life and so forth.

Last night I was moving from screen to screen on my Fascinate when a pop up nag applet appeared from the not yet installed "city" application.

I decided to root my device once and for all, did so and happily, while grinning, deleted that and 14 others from the app drawer.

So, it's rooted and it's staying that way until 2.2 comes out, at which time I'll have to unroot, allowing all that junk back in there. I suppose I'll end up rooting Froyo as well.

As far as ROMs go, most of us in the Fascinate All Things Root threads are of the "wait and see" mindset wrt the few that are out in beta. It's pretty early on to be flashing them as yet.

I did the BB deal too...I don't know if I had a freak Eris but I don't the fascinate that much faster..Of course I was running Kaosfroyo but still...

As long as it can be rooted, to delete bloat. I'd be happy. I'm considering selling my Inc for a galaxy. I hate the cheapy feeling of the Inc.

whats to stop one from using something like google maps brut and just using an old eris as a dedicated GPS/navi device?

I'm tempted by the fascinate, but even more tempted by whatever manages to follow it :0

Not much really. But you won't have a 3G data connection obviously, so you'll need an app that downloads the maps to the SD card. And I'm sure those exist.

..and can easily be de-Binged. ;)

True, I just don't want to HAVE to root to de-Bing my Google phone. But again, it's easy, and overall not that big of a deal :)

I had my concerns about Bing too. After reading/watching a few reviews, it doesn't really bother me that much anymore. This video review in particular help me make up my mind.

The way Bing works with the phone doesn't look like it is really overtaking anything. Google Maps + Nav and most of the other Google apps still work on the phone too. If I really grow to hate it, I can always root and deBing the phone.

Thanks!

hence the google maps brut.

but then again, presumably on a next gen device navi would work better and without the lag that nearly killed me on the interstate today.

Just wanted to pass along my best wishes to OTD and Frisco on your new choices. I hope you are as happy with them as I am with my Incredible...... Use them....Enjoy them, aren't new toys just the best. We are all children at heart and I love everyone of my toys. I just hate parting with them when the new ones arrive. I hope I never grow tired of getting these new tech devices, as they become more and more of what we hoped they would be.:D:D:D:D:D

PS: Alas I just wish my Eris was still alive, RIP

No cheapy feeling to the Fascinate to report. ;)

My main concern with the Fascinate is the whole GPS issue. I've been lurking over at the Fascinate forum and that seems like a pretty widespread problem. I still have another month and a half before I can upgrade, so I'll keep my options open...especially since the Continuum might be coming out by then.

Yeah, there's a guy at work with a rooted Captivate (I think that's the model, but I know its a Galaxy S phone) and he's still pretty honked about a GPS issue. Says they've been promised a patch but whatever they've done (or not done), it is still not 100% corrected. Another guy that is my same work area has an Epic though, and he hasn't mentioned any GPS issue...(but the screen is pretty awesome--just a depth and richness to it even when compared to my Droid X).

My GPS works flawlessly. It was the first thing I checked when I left the store. It locked in on my position in 22 seconds. Of the 8 people I know personally that have a Galaxy S phone only one has a GPS problem.

Well, I spent some time reading about the GPS reports. Then I talked with Fascinate owners who had never heard of it.

It's not the first time I've seen that: forum complaints about issues that are not in the hands of people I talk to about it. The Eris had "lag" that I never saw on mine or others in real life, etc.

So, again, we cannot negate what we see posted in the forums at all, but we can remember that device (and car and computer, etc) forums attract a lot of people who can't figure this or that out, and a lot of people who do have problems with their item but who only represent a small sliver of the population who owns those things happily and with no bugs.

I know that most people only post on the negatives about a phone...so I'll definitely keep that in mind. What about the lack of a notification LED? Right now, I really depend on that light going off on the Eris to know if I have a missed email/txt when the screen is off.

But if I do decide to get the Fascinate, I'll be sure to do what OTD did and test out the GPS right away.

I really would like the Fascinate but it looks like my "new every 2" its 4 months away, can't decide if I should just wait intill then an see whats out by then or call verizon and see if they let me upgrade now ....

I will admit that the lack of LED does bother me. There have been a few times that I have missed a call or text (phone in silent mode) and had no idea until I turned the phone back on.

I will be holding off until February. Lots of things coming between now and then, many new andy phones scheduled. If I can't find anything I like then D2 it is.

Wait see here!

Market app, "NoLED" works great in the Fascinate.

It can be configured to use various types and colors of led lights on the sleeping, black screen (red for sms, blue for email, etc), as well as a link on the lock screen.

This should help people when they upgrade to the next phone:

https://www.trade-in.vzw.com/Home.aspx

As of right now, you can get $132 for a functional, non-cracked screen, HTC Droid Eris.

Edit: They give gift cards for VZW and paying bills, not the VISA debit cards like they do for phone rebates.
