Root What's Wrong With This ROM?

also notice the new guide refering to vmware.

all guides for gparted including the vmware one is step by step.

im trying to understand why you find understanding us or the guides difficult.
Im not trying to be horrible im just trying to understand you a little more.
everyone finds doing this stuff difficult when they first start out but you consistently have problems understanding or reading the information we have provided.

whats your background?
how old are you?
general experience with computers?

Yep. It was this thread I saw this morning that made me decide to write the vmware gparted guide.

OLAmdroid, check out the guide in the "all about rooting" sticky thread for using gparted with VMware player

its mad how our minds work tbh dan, considering that other thread i posted on you were like "actually i was just going to write a guide on this" and it was the 1st time i had mentioned its use for anything other than alpharev

are we the same person???

Okay, this whole "partitioning" thing is just becoming too hard for me. I also understand that it is putting stress on all of you, so can you guys just answer me these questions please:

How do I set a screenlock code on the MIUI ROM?

How do I change it from an iPhone layout to a GingerBread-like layout?

Does "Titanium Backup" move ALL apps to the SD card?

It is Windows Vista... as for the age... ?
Actually Rastaman was asking what your experience of computing is, rather than what OS version your computer is running.

As for the other questions:

Does "Titanium Backup" move ALL apps to the SD card?
I've not used Miui (have a zip on my card, but not tried it so far), but does it not have a security menu? That's what I'd look for.

Putting a 3rd party launcher (Go Launcher, Launcher Pro, etc) on it would allow you to have a less iPhone-like layout.

Ti Backup will offer the option to move any app to SD - long-press on the app in Ti's list and look in the menu of options. It also warns you that it might not work, and to take backups first. I've never used this option myself.

If you do this, remember that it's the same way as the "move to SD" option in the phone's manage applications menu, so the app's widgets, if any, will stop working (maybe not immediately, but they won't be available after a reboot).

Any app that has a widget or needs to run automatically at start up wont work on sd

Partition is the better option. It is easy. If you live in the UK, post it to me. Just pay recorded delivery both ways .. pm me

Of course the problem there is that you can't fix if it breaks.

Seriously set a vm up as per my new guide. It's literally step by step

To be honest with you it's all just too complicated for me... I am considering going back to the Vodafone Froyo ROM. But first I would just like to confirm that there is NO other GINGERBREAD ROM (Not a MIUI one) that has a self-timer on the camera and the ability to move MOST apps to the SD card with the "Move to SD" option in the application management?

download mini tool partion wiziard, its free and easy to use with no imaginary magical virtual cd.s, i managed to create a partition using this after 12 tins of beer:confused:

no seriously dont, its the bane of evil and in most cases fks your partitions up
there is good reason we advise against it
one of which both myself and SUroot have an IT background and have had bad dealings with that very bit of software

Don't see how its too complicated. The gparted and mini tool interfaces are about the same. The only difference is that you need to burn gparted or follow my VMWare step by step. I actually feel you just can't be bothered to understand.

If you are using the "Move to SD" menu item then it depends on the app developer, rather than the ROM, whether an app can be moved. That will also be true with the stock Froyo one.

However, I believe that a number of ROMs have a setting to override this and allow you to move any app - can't check where it is in the settings just now as my phone is doing a nandroid restore as I type, but I'm fairly sure I've seen it in there. If not, maybe it's one of those things that "Spare Parts" can enable, but I think something like that is more likely to be in the ROM itself.

Oh, and in answer to an earlier question, you set a screen lock on Miui from the "personal password" menu.

I ran Miui XJ for a few minutes this morning, and a quick poke through the menus turned it up (not seriously thinking of changing, more just that I'd never seen Miui live so thought I should have a play at some point).

Ok, CyanogenMod has an option in the CyanogenMod Settings -> Application menu to allow any app to be moved.

But you might be better off with GingerVillain, as that takes less setting up than CM (e.g. don't need to install Google apps separately)

Okay, I think I'll try GingerVillain then. And also to SUroot, it is not that I "just can't be bothered to understand", but that I TRULY do not understand. Plus to be honest, I want a completely different ROM from MIUI because it quite frankly... Sucks. So where can I get GingerVillain?

You understand mini tool. Gparted is the same. You just have to burn it to cd first or follow the VMWare guide step by step.

No timer

Okay, so if I continue to try to partition the SD card and keep MIUI, how exactly do I change the lay-out again? Also, the password only works on messages, the dialing option, etc. I need it to do that thing where I press the power button while the screen is off, and then it comes up. How do I do that?

Miui is a bit alien to me. Tried it for a day but didn't like it. Couldn't tell you what is where. Hadron has the miui camera which you can flash on GV if that's what's keeping you on miui

If you are so hung up on having a self timer, there is an app called camera zoom fx (I think) its about £3 and has a self timer, I really recommend you try and partition your card as it will make a huge difference with the apps, but if you can't, use the a2sd and move to SD, but ay least you can get this app and have it on any rom.

Hold on, when you say "flash the MIUI camera on GV", do you mean I can have the MIUI camera, on GingerVillain?
