Root ROOTING For Dummies

I need to un-root my phone but I'm having a bit of trouble. I'm following the instructions in SECTION 5: UN-ROOTING. When I get to STEP 7: FLASH ZIP, I don't see the unrevoked-foreverson.zip.

I select Recover from the White Screen and it goes into ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.01, but no unrevoked-foreverson.zip option is shown. I have gone through all the submenus but no luck. I did not rename the file nor does it have a zip.zip extension. It's also in the root directory of the sdcard. Thanks.

I am pretty sure you should select flash zip from sd card and then choose it from the root of your sd card.

Here's another link for unrooting.

I did try that. I found another site that suggested that I have HTC sync installed contrary to all the unrevoked information. I tried it and it worked. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Yeah, I'm kind of mad my computer crashed on me because I had a good one for you I was going to link to you.

I think the 4g antenna might be a different thing and might be located in different areas than the 3g antenna. Just be thankful you get 4g ;) If I was downloading at 5-7mb on my phone, I would cancel my cable internet and save about 60/month.

Here's a couple links. Link 1 and Link 2

Doesn't seem to be a way to find out for sure.

Thanks for following up. I have had no luck either. Its a bit frustating, while I do get the 4g in my area, sometimes the same spots in my house don't work like the used to. I would constantly get 7mbs dl in one specific spot in my house, now sometimes I get 2-3 in that spot. It corresponds to how strong my signal is too. I am wondering if it has to do with the custom ROM? I guess I can flash back and see if it changes anything. Or maybe it has to do with the PRL updates? who knows. I have read so many conflicting reports on what causes it its a crap shoot. ha

BTW I am frustrated because I have cancelled my internet at home and use my phone. O)

So in regards to the warranty of my Sprint EVO is it a "Once you cross this line you cannot go back" type of situation when rooting??? As in if I am in need to have my warranty serviced there is no way to backup my stuff and bring this back to an UN Rooted state so Sprint techs will not bark at me?

Thanks

no you can always unroot your phone. i had to take my phone because my phone would randomly reboot. it got so bad that i had to unroot and take it in. they had no clue that i was rooted. they eventually gave me a re-furbished evo. it is a pretty easy process. it took like 5mins to do.

Thanks for the reply. What is, to date, the best way to get it back to the original state/version that allows me to take it back to Sprint if needed.

Again thanks.

I'm having problems w/ this part....

STEP 2: Installing Drivers (WINDOWS ONLY - MAC USERS DO NOT NEED TO INSTALL THE DRIVERS)
- Remove any previously installed Drivers that you may have installed for any other ROOTing purposes.
- Go to the unrevoked website (public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki])
- Download the unrevoked modified USB driver (android-usb-driver.zip)
- Save the file to the Desktop of your computer.
- UnZip the files to the Desktop of your computer.
- Follow the instructions as carefully as you can.

(Important Note: for some reason, my phone didn’t list an Android 1.0 as a selectable option. Anything listed as an Android is what you are looking for)
(NOTE: Some have had to Re-Install the HBOOT drivers a second time after the initial install.)

I extracted the files (is that the same as unzip?) and I get a folder that is "Android USB Driver". I click in on it and it has 5 sub folders:

amd64
i386
android_winusb (like a doc file)
androidwinusb86
androidwinusba64

Inside the top two subfolders is wdfcoinstaller01007.dll, winusbcoinstaller.dll, wudfupdate_01007.dll. I don't know what to do w/ these things. When I double click I get this error message: "You are attempting to open a file of type 'Application extension' (.dll) These files are used by the operating system and by variouis programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system. If you still want to open the file, click open with. Otherwise, click cancel."

So when I open with, I just pick internet explorer and it atkes me to a windows file association website or something.

I am stumped. Obviously I don't know dick about computers so I appreciate any help someone could provide.

I would say just flash a different ROM, maybe. Do you have the current radio's?

You are on Mikfroyo right? I don't think it has to do with that particular ROM, but maybe more your setup. Try this, redownload and reflash the custom ROM you are on and don't do anything else to it. Just log into your accounts and let your contacts sync up and reboot. Then use your phone for a day or so without restoring any apps or making any other changes and see how that works. And if that fixes it then do one thing at a time and see if you can isolate your issue. Be sure when/if you restore apps with Titanium Backup to only restore apps, no system data.

See how that goes.

Considering rooting my Evo 4G right now. I've rooted my Droid 1 but this process is completely different (even though easier) plus i went customer ROM right away so I'm not sure what works or doesn't work if you root and don't go custom ROM so I have a couple quick questions. I'm not looking to go custom ROM yet so if I do the Unrevoked3 root will all my apps and settings remain? Can I change the annoying/loud Sprint loading screen w/o a custom ROM? Can I change the way the LED behaves w/o custom ROM? I plan to install Titanium backup, Wireless tether & uninstall all the bloatware that I will never use, am tired of looking at and is just taking up real estate. Those are my main goals at this point.

Thanks for the help.

If you just simply root your phone it will be in the state you have it in right now, just with root access.

However if you follow the guide from step 1 or pre-rooting you will do a factory reset which will, obviously reset your phone, so that's up to you. I will tell you this, you will do that when you get a custom ROM anyway, so may as well do the guide from start to finish. It's not near as painful as it seems.

Here's what I did when I rooted my wives phone. Get an app called appbrain and create an account online and sync all your apps with it, it's free and doesn't require root to use, like TB(titanium backup). Get TB later. Then start with step 1 of the guide and follow it to the t...once you get root and you are onto the after rooting section install appbrain and sync/download all your apps to your phone and then get TB and do a backup of your apps. Now you can uninstall/freeze all the bloatware and you will still be on the stock ROM, like you were before. Once you get all that done make a nand backup of that setup with AMON_RA.

Then research the Custom ROMs, there are a lot of good ones out there, my favorite is MikFroyo.

I appreciate the info but I rooted my Droid 1 early one and after going through countless custom ROMs with that phone I got all the whiz-bang excitement for that whole process out of my system. I really do like the Sense UI and my phone as it sits save for the few things I mentioned above. At this point I just want to get root access in order to remedy a couple of the things that bug me about this phone. Overall though I'm quite happy with the stability and lack of time I have to invest in the phone as it sits to make it work.

here is a thought that we just brought up in another thread...use z4 to get temp root, then back up all apps with titanium back up, then full root and restore titanium back ups...

Why would one need to do this as opposed to just doing a full root?

So that you could backup all your apps with TB, since it requires root to run. Kind of does the same thing that the process I used with appbrain but instead would allow you to just restore your apps instead of redownload them all.

1000 ways to skin a cat.

To answer your other questions, I don't think you would need a custom ROM to do those things, however most come with different splash screens and such, just root and the know how to change them. There are some threads out there on XDA and on here about how to change your splash screens and LED stuff.

Is there any particular reason why you don't want to flash a custom ROM?

Nick is correct i was referring to being able to just reload your apps instead of downloading them again from appbrain. Also it would save your app data doing it that way like game scores and settings which appbrain will not do.

I am a big proponent of full root its easy and unlocks a world of potential for your phone. So why not?

Having said that z4 is a temp root used by some people to use apps that require root access like people that just want to wireless tether. Z4 is one click and goes away after you reboot your phone. Running root apps is about all you can do with it since it just roots your current rom and doesnt unlock nand or provide a custom recovery, just sayin it is an option, and is certainly an option for making titanium back ups of apps before you do a full root.

Oh, I see. So if I just do the easy Unrevoked3 root process it will reset my device? That's one of the questions I asked earlier because I've never just rooted. I've rooted right to a new ROM so I don't know what rooting the device w/o a ROM entails. I thought it just granted superuser rights but it actually does reset your device in the process, huh?

I'm not wanting to run a custom ROM for all the reasons I listed above. I don't want the instability and the potential of losing 4G or making my device unstable or losing functionality (no matter how small) here and there and having to fix them. I also like the Sense UI and prefer not losing it and I don't want to have to invest countless hours on researching ROMs, flashing them and setting up my phone again. Been there, done that. I have lots of reasons for not wanting to run a custom ROM so I would rather not at this time. I had a rooted D1 for a year and a half and while it was fun I'm not looking at going through all of that again.

It will not reset your rom unless you do a factory reset before rooting. Unrevoked will only Unlock Nand(turn s-on to s-off), Flash a custom recovery, and root your rom. It will make no changes to your phone other than those 3 things. Anything else will be done by you

Well and I answered your question about resetting your phone. If you just run unrevoked it will not reset your phone, unless you do the "optional" factory data reset. I assume that you have read the OP, right?

That's cool man, you don't have to run a custom ROM if you don't want to, to each there own.

As for stability and functionality and sense you won't lose any of that and quite honestly it will get much better/stable/faster with a custom ROM. I've ran CM6.1, Myn, Fresh, Baked Snacks, and MikFroyo and a couple others that really aren't worth mentioning. All them have a lot of great things with them and are very stable. You like sense, so do I, so flash a ROM that is based on sense, ie MikFroyo, Myn. MikFroyo, IMO, is far more stable and much faster than any ROM I have run, including stock.

But like I said, to each their own my man. Just do the unrevoked and you will be nand unlocked and have superuser rights.
