Compare, contrast, opinions: GSIII vs EVO 4G LTE / Sprint-CDMA-S4 only

Well, Samsung did say we would see the S3 in the US in June so....Also consider that the GSIII is the phone of the Olympics. They don't really wanna release a phone months after the Olympics..

They did? I heard them say "in the summer" for the US, but don't recall them saying June specifically.

LOL...They won't be releasing the phone "after" the Olympics. Olympics are in London this year and the International SGS 3, they said May 29.

Samsung Epic Speakeasy LTE touch

if they add the NOTE size screen to SG3 and a kickstand... that would be a homerun.
Don't tease me like that! If they release a SG3 with a RGB-Stripe 5.3" HD Display with Phone & Text messaging capabilities... I will be forced, FORCED, to buy out my contract and get one. :p

FWIW - before Siri, Samsung ran ads on it's voice recognition stuff built-in.

They didn't get accused of copying later, because no one really paid attention to the ads. Apple makes a ton on iPhones and their marketing is focused, while for Sammy, it's just another business segment (and their advertising pushes Sammy first, products second, features third - no wonder no one noticed).

The Siri mindset is there. Anything said on the Android side will forevermore be compared to Siri, and facts won't matter.

To this day, people will still comment on Beta vs VHS with all sorts of urban myths accepted as facts.

Voice recognition in the Android vs Apple world will no different years from now.

This is so true, and so sad. Very upsetting to me personally, but it seems that whoever is the best at marketing often gets the credit for the technological breakthrough.

The Galaxy Nexus is 720p with PenTile. I had a chance to examine the screen of a coworker's GNex, and at that pixel density, you do have to look hard to notice it. So I think at 720p the vast majority of people will think it's a non-issue. Of course, given the choice between PenTile 720p and traditional RGB stripe 720p, I'm still going with RGB stripe, simply because I can still see the difference, and I don't have to settle.
Totally agree with you. It's not a huge issue, but if the option is there for a phone with equal or comparable specification I will buy the RGB-Stripe phone every time.

I'm leaning towards the EVO LTE... both look good though. There is a pretty good discussion going on about the two here: http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g-lte/526810-first-pre-announcement-ltevo-vs-gsiii-thread.html

BenChase7, I'm also leaning towards the EVO LTE. I have 3 days to make my decision - because I told myself that I would decide by the time the EVO LTE was "orderable." We know what platform the EVO LTE is based on but nobody has really had the chance to experience the Samsung product - other than during the announcement event. And, personally, I find Samsung's rhetoric at the launch event to be a bit over the top - though that could be due to cultural differences.

Yup, Samsung Galaxy S III HSPA+ arriving in May, 4G version hitting North America this summer -- Engadget In the article it says specifically June for the US and the Olympics is still a world wide event.

Nice. I didn't see that part of the presentation, so that's good news. I'll be able to compare the LTEvo and SGS3, before I'm eligibile for upgrade in July when hopefully the MoPhoQ will be at least announced formally. Timing for all of these is just awesome.

It's possible. The iPhone 4S is 2.4 I believe and still takes the best photos around. :D

Zeiss lens, yes?

a larger aperture can cancel out a crappy (relatively speaking) sensor by letting in more light. Crappy sensors tend to have very high noise:signal ratios, so the more signal you can provide, the better the resulting photo.

With a discerning eye, you can tell what the weakness is in a cell phone camera system. If the final image is grainy, that's a crappy sensor issue. If the final image is somewhat foggy or unfocused around the edges, that's an issue of bad glass (internal reflections). If you see cyan/red edges along constrasty edges, particularly at the edges of photos, this is chromatic aberration, and it's caused by lack of corrective lenses between the front glass and the sensor.

iPhone4s camera uses a relatively large aperture to minimize grain. It has several layers of lenses to correct optical distortions. It also uses coated glass that significantly reduces reflections. I believe the coated glass is the biggest reason why iP4s photos are as good as they are. I've shot photos with non-coated filters on my SLR, and they come out much worse than with coated filters. Of course, the cost of the glass doubles or triples when you coat it, so not all manufacturers are going to go to that extreme for their cameras.

next time you go into a picture framing shop, look around for their museum-quality glass demonstration frame. Usually half of the frame uses regular glass, and the other half uses anti-reflective coating glass. the difference is amazing.

A real question here - Do you guys think that the S4 in the E4GLTE will support 802.11ac? I'm assuming the S3 will also have the S4. I can't get a straight answer out of HTC. Their response to my question was, "It will work with A,B,G,N and we have not announced compatibility with ac." ...well... I knew that.

From what I read, the S4 has a "module" available from Qualcomm that gives it 802.11ac compatibility. ...but what does "module" mean? Is that a piece of hardware or is it something that we could unlock through software later even if it doesn't come enabled from the factory?

If you don't know what 802.11ac is - look it up. This will be a required spec in 3-5 years.

I'm another EVO LTE fan. I love the SuperLCD 2 display. It is natural (colors wise) and extremely gorgeous. You can't go wrong with the S4 Krait SoC either. Damn thing is a beast!

EVO LTE in July, here I come!

IMO it adds to the whole May EVO release conspiracy. It also would make sense for Sprint to get the GSIII first since their current GSII isn't LTE compatible like the other carriers GSII's.

Yeah, that would make sense. Didn't the E4GT get released before ATT and Verizon's version? I really can't remember.

IEEE 802.11ac - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a spec under development, the phone didn't (couldn't) get FCC approval for it, and it's not mentioned anywhere in the Qualcomm S4 white paper, so I am going to go with no, neither phone will support it.

Not sure what you've read about downloading modules to the S4, but future support for that will likely take new silicon.

In addition to the modem/signaling modules in the S4, phones also need radio transceiver chips to get to any required radio functions.

Sorry. :)

I won't touch a samsung phone again. I've had the Epic, Nexus S with Sprint and now the Note with AT&T. All three got bad reception, weak wifi reception and GPS that is just about useless. My note even has two GPS radios in it and still sucks.

Samsung sucks people in with the specs and screens. When it comes to everyday use in my experience they are junk. Look in any Samsung thread and you'll see I'm not the only one with these issues. It's a running theme for them across the board.

I am leaning toward GS3 at the moment. I am a big HTC fan. I really don't like Samsung, but I must say I was impressed with the GS3. The main point for me is the removable battery and the increased internal memory. That is what I need. Otherwise I would go with LTEvo. So if the battery thing doesn't bother you, stick with HTC.

My vote would be for the SIII. I really like Samsung phones and dislike HTC. I have owned both and really just prefer Samsung.

I have never had a Samsung smartphone so I would like to know why do you prefer Samsung over HTC? I'm trying to get as much information before I make my decision.

I have had the opposite experience. I loved my Nexus S (T mobile) and I love my GSII (Sprint). I don't have a problem with reception, wifi or gps

I like the feel of Samsung phones, I LOVE their screens, and rooting and using custom ROMs is easy.

I HATE Sense on HTC phones. It just gets in the way without adding any benefits IMO. I think out of all the overlays that Sense is the worst and most intrusive. Plus HTC makes using custom ROMs more difficult and they lock their bootloader.

<----- Gets popcorn. :)

Looks like it's about to get real.

Do you stick with TouchWiz or root/other?

I actually gave touchwiz a try for a while and it wasn't as bad as I expected.

Eventually I always end up rooting and using an AOSP ROM though, no matter what skin I am getting rid of

I say either HTC or Motorola first before Samsung (if we're excluding rooting). If not, still HTC before Samsung for me, although Samsung has seemingly beefed up their mobile support compared to years passed.

As for the OEM UI's, I personally think they all suck. There are some "in app" features on HTC Sense that are awesome compared to all the rest, but the overall launchers suck (including Sense), IMO. I'd rather go with a 3rd party launcher than any of them.

I've had ok experiences with Samsung in the past, but the consistent issue that has popped up over the years w/ Samsung are the weak radios and GPS signal. There are some that never had issues, but I've always noticed my HTC devices to have better signal. Motorola, having only released their 1st Sprint superphone last year, has been by far the best as far as radio signals are concerned.

I would have to agree with you as the order of preference. But now Samsung seems to be trying to take the lead. I'm not saying they are in the lead, but they seem to be trying to. I really hope HTC takes note. As far as Motorola, I think they have nothing to prove. Motorola was the first cell phone. They have been doing this from day one. This is why they most likely have the best radio signals. They know what they are doing.

Just came back from the T-Mobile and AT&T store looking at the One S and the One X. I must say, the build quality of both of them on first look is fantastic. I especially like the white One X. Coming fron an original Evo both screen are very good. Obviously, even the One S has a better screen than the original Evo, but the One X's screen...WOW!!! I think everything else is getting a thrashing at this point. Because of the way the white tapers around the middle in the One X, that screen just seems to be edge to edge. I have not seen the new Galaxy so I can't tell how it feels or looks in person, but base on the photo, the One X easily takes the looks department. There are reports that the Galaxy screen is slightly better than the Nexus, but it is still pentile. I think most likely the One X will win the screen department as well. As to the chip, I've seen some benchmarks at Anandtech which shows the quad core Exynos slightly beating the S4 in most test although there are some test at Engadget that show the S4 winning a few. I would expect though that the quad Exynos will be beating the Tegra 3 easily. I would pick the One X because the design is much better and most likely the screen. I've never understand why Samsung has never use better materials and always try to make things as glossy as possible which looks quite tacky on phones. I'm not the biggest fan of the bit of glossy black in the Evo LTE, but I'm sure they will make a replacement for that with the same matte color. Guess I will still pick the Evo LTE. This might sound blasphemous here, but I might wait to see the new Nexus device (provided that it is not samsung with the glossy plastic) and the new iPhone.:D
